Btw, am I the only one that had to do a double take at 1:17:47 and then google it when thinking that was Donald Sutherland standing on the ground in front of the trenches who raises up the binoculars? Only just noticed how much of a doppelganger that guy is for DS, so much so I thought it really might have been him as an extra for a little bit.

Also the new VFX is very well done, I’m amazed at how well the throne room guards having lightsabers works, an instant improvement on the original and I find it far more threatening of a fight than with their original weapons. The one instance where the saber becomes a whip is a tad odd but it doesn’t really detract at all from the scene.

The fix to give Luke his green ROTJ saber during his standoff with Kylo is also well done though the close ups are a tad shakey (literally at times LOL) and it does almost appear more 2D than 3D so the effect isn’t perfect and could use some additional work (if possible, I’m not experienced in VFX one bit) but I imagine the overall affect is probably fairly convincing if you’re not expecting / looking for it.

No. The first time I saw the movie I thought, “hell, that guy looks a lot like Donald Sutherland” even though I knew it wasn’t him. Now every time I watch the movie and that shot comes 'round I point out “Donald Sutherland” to my wife as a joke.

Easy! Insert an extra line of exposition with one of the characters (doesn’t matter which) saying, “Luke has actually transcended the physical plane, like a next level version of what Yoda and Obi-Wan did.”

Problem solved. Movie fixed.

Show scenes out of order. Might require some green screen inserts, but show Luke alive after his supposed “death.” There are lines about Luke being alive already from TFA that could be re-purposed. Again, I wouldn’t care to attempt it, but it could be done, and would improve the movie (but not redeem it completely).

The problem with the “red guards” is much the same problem with all the bad guys in these new movies. They’re played up as being awesome, but are really inept… noobs and punks. And the good guys are so OP, it’s silly… and then they suddenly have trouble overcoming drones like this (even though its a foregone conclusion that they’ll win). Some editing could improve this a bit, but again, it’s polishing the edges of a stinky pile of dung.

So I know most of this is already done, but I’m just going to throw things out there as I think of them.

I just saw this video by another editor where he put the voice of Obi-Wan in Luke’s death scene. Kind of an interesting choice: https://youtu.be/waffkAHv2ds?t=90

Check out my ‘Last of the Jedi’ edit… right before Luke fades away, we cut to Rey and hear him tell her ‘this is your fight now’… then he fades away. It works amazingly. The audio is edited together seamlessly from lines taken from the Episode 9 trailer

Your cut seems great! Can you PM please?

Loving all the work you’re doing. Would love a PM to check out this edit. Sound much better than the theatrical version.

Your fanedit sounds very ambitious. Could you send me a PM so that I can have the chance to watch it?

i’m considering a v.11 (v.10.2?) adding in Luke’s ‘this is your fight now’ line from the purist edition

Would that make sense for him to say if he’s still alive though?

Well in the ending of the Clean Cut, Luke’s fate is purposely left ambiguous. I feel adding this quote doesn’t necessarily imply his demise, but rather a passing of the torch. Furthermore, we all know he DID die at that point in the saga, and it will be reiterated in Episode 9. So leaving his fate ambiguous satisfies both ideas… as a standalone, he looks like the hero who saved the rebellion and passes the torch when he feels his job is done… and as part of the saga, the added line will provide just enough implication that he has “passed on”…which leads us right into Ep.9 without a WTF moment.

Just skimmed pretty much the whole thread and I’m very excited to watch this and burn it to blu Ray one day

I LOVE LOVE LOVE so many of the ideas in this edit. I was watching it this morning and even though I enjoyed the original film and was very familiar with it, most of the edits were seamless. My only feedback would be:

  1. It is a little awkward to not know whats going on with the Resistance since we spend all of our time with Rey and Luke
  2. in the first throne room scene the Pretorian Guards ignite their vibro weapons, but if we’re doing lightsabers they should be ignited as lightsabers.
  3. Why not extend the first skype phone call with Rey and Kylo using the whole scene, but use HAL9000’s edit of that scene to take out the caretakers, that scene just abruptly ended.
  4. the lightsabers are kinda weird sometimes because throughout the various throne room scenes you see their blades, it might be too much to ask but erasing the blades would help to the lightsaber believability. RIght after snoke dies I can see that most of the blades were taken out so the the ignited lightsabers could take their place. And also we have no idea how the red curtain caught on fire (which isnt a HUGE deal)
  5. The cut from exploded ship to hux standing over kylo is actually really jarring since we know he wasn’t even close to there a second ago. Maybe just a short scene of the destroyed hanger but leave finn and rose out of any of the shots. Just a “heres the damage” shot would help
  6. I love the new color especially on crait
  7. Its implied that finn pulls away with the rest of the group but you can stil see his trail going straight for the canon. Maybe a small vfx change just having the red line curve
8)also the green lightsaber looks amazing

I wish there was someway to add somesort of story to intercut all the rey and luke stuff with. As the edit stands I really like it, but we leave the resistance for like and hour and then go back and their on transports, I dont know if there is anything you can do for that considering this edits purpose. All that aside though, as is, great edit dude

I think your cut really does a good job of cutting a lot of the oddities from TLJ such as the prank call with Hux, Snoke using the Force on Hux, Cantonica, a lot of the Porg and caretaker scenes, and most of the stuff with Holdo. Overall I think this aggressive strategy works really well in that it preserves a lot of the strengths of the movie which was largely the Rey scenes and getting rid of everything weighing it down like Poe-Holdo and the casino stuff.

The Praetorians having lightsabers I think worked. I think your edit is a good followup to the HttF (a TFA edit) fanedit.

One suggestion I think is that perhaps you should have done some introduction scene for Rose since she is not completely cut out and is still featured here. Perhaps the scene on Crait with her and her sister’s medallion thus connecting her to Paige who died in the beginning of TLJ.
