Is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm released in HD anywhere? I found that it’s available on a few streaming services, but I’m not sure if they’re in HD, or just the DVD data copied over.

I haven’t ever been able to find it. It doesn’t look like it’s available to stream in HD in the UK. I’ve never heard of it being broadcast on anything other than SD channels. Hopefully someone else can check if it’s available somewhere else in this world. I’ve added it to the list!

There’s not an awful lot available from the DCAU in HD. I’ve got Mystery of the Batwoman and Return of the Joker on blu-ray and the first two seasons of Justice League are available too (although they are cropped to 4:3.) Out of everything Mask of the Phantasm ought to be out there in HD as it definitely had a theatrical release.

Year of the Devil

I bought the blu-ray, only to be baffled at the fact it’s in 480p!

I know that the TV airing was in Full HD, so does anyone know about anything?

Huh. I thought I had read that the blu-ray spec requires the main feature be HD for officially released titles.

There are SD Blu Rays out there. Mostly old concerts and a couple Broadway musicals. The SD masters are upscaled in the process. The only real benefits are better compression and lossless audio. Some old tv show sets also fit on fewer discs.

Another film I’ve not heard of! It doesn’t seem to be readily available in a great many places that I have access to and I can’t find any technical specifications anywhere. Can we be sure that the HD broadcast wasn’t just an upscale?

I’ve added it to the list though, Hans. I really hope somebody else can shed a bit more light on this!

Wow, they are even advertising it as such right on the box. “SD on Blu-ray” is something I’ve never heard of until today.

Yeah, not all are honest and upfront about it though. I’ve seen a Blu Ray disc with three of The Howling sequels crammed on it, using old SD full frame transfers. And one of them previously had a very nice widescreen DVD release with a commentary track in the early 2000’s.

I’m starting to wonder if a lot of direct to video movies from the 80’s that have changed hands over time even have film elements still in existence.

Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991)

Just saw that this is available on Netflix streaming in HD in the US.

Didn’t look like real HD to me. Is it officially listed as such?

MOTP has long been rumored and requested in a SE with features. Nothing has ever been done. DCAU titles only hit BD if an HD master exists or one can be easily made. I was shocked we’ve even gotten any.

BTAS should be first but it takes time as Timm & Co. refuse transfers that tamper with the original animation. Yay!
MOTP is still stuck with the noisy outdated LD transfer. The 1.85 crop was hastily added for the rushed theatrical release and the 1.33 is open but there should be a compromise 1.66 made for BD likely. The color needs correction but is warmer that TAS because of the Technicolor printing. Sound on the LD is perfect.

Revisiting S:TAS shows how badly these things need new transfers. Yikes.

It is listed as HD for me. Haven’t watched it, though.

Wow, I didn’t know it was cropped. I had always thought it was made with the cinema in mind (for some reason, can’t think where I got the notion from).

A proper blu-ray release of the animated series would be amazing. But there’s, what, forty or fifty episodes absolutely covered in specks and dirt that would need a huge amount of time spent on cleaning up? I can’t see it happening, not now.

Just out of curiosity - there’s an instance in one of the episodes on DVD having a “five years later” (or somesuch) caption zoomed way, way in that’s clearly the result of some bad scanning. I can’t remember which episode it was but if anybody else noticed it do you know if it occurred on the tv airings as well?

I’ve updated the list as I’ve discovered Addams Family Values, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, Gossip and The Limey for sale on iTunes UK (and I assume they are similarly available elsewhere in the world too.) Good news!

The one single movie that I own on DVD that I don’t have in HD is The Opposite of Sex. I fear it will remain the lone SD title.

I’ve stuck it on the list. I’d like that one too actually so there’s now at least one more person on the lookout!

I’m pretty sure it’s been on Film4 in the UK and that would’ve been an HD broadcast for sure. I’d say it’s definitely out there, just a matter of finding it!

Thanks. TBH, it’s never aired on any of them movie channels in the US and that’s through Sony. If another company had their own HD master, that’s a different story.

What about titles shown through Comcast On Demand HD? My friend has it and we watched COLORS (Already on Blu-ray by Second Sight without Subtitles), and Big Top Pee Wee in HD a couple months ago.
Many titles are OAR from there and quite decent quality. It’s all on rotation though. Should be 1080i so there’s bound to be caps of them. Would custom BD25s be possible for the majority of those titles in HD unavailable anywhere else on the planet?

Was Rush Hour 2 ever available anywhere on blu? I’ve looked high and low but cannot seem to find it!

EDIT: Scratch that… It seems it was released, but never available in the US.

Hopefully a print distributed during the theatrical release is in the wild to be scanned for use in a restoration project. I just got the LD and a new player to sync the uncompressed audio track with the DVD.

Has Flight of the Navigator been released in HD anywhere outside of Europe yet? I know they got a Blu-Ray release from Second Sight…also, how is that transfer? I’ve heard their (region-locked) release of the Super Mario Bros. Movie was superb.
