The Inficolor Collection

Introducing an all-new collection, an attempt to bring 3D back into vogue for the 4K era with an old 3D technology!

Remember Inficolor? No? That’s OK, you probably never even heard about it unless you lived in Europe in the early part of the last decade. Created by TriOviz, this unique anaglyphic system used custom magenta and green lenses for an improved 3D experience on 2D television sets. Mainly used for video game content, at least one DVD was made using the Inficolor method. I believe that will have to do until what time, if any, the 4K UHD Blu-ray format starts to include 3D in its specifications.

A 4K UHD Dolby Vision TV I got for Christmas will serve as my grading monitor, to ensure the 3D looks as good as it can get. Titles included in this series will be upscaled to 4K from HD sources, and all will be in 3D. HLG will be the HDR method I use for this content, and everything will be encoded in HEVC. Fullscreen versions will be 4:3, with decorative bars placed on the left and right sides of the screen.

P.S. For those wondering why a title they want to see in 3D, such as ENCANTO or JAWS, is not listed, it’s likely because a home 3D release never took place, though we can hope for eventual home 3D releases of titles yet to be available in 3D, especially if they looked impressive with that added dimension. Particularly lazy 3D conversions, such as CLASH OF THE TITANS and THE LAST AIRBENDER, will also not be featured, nor will titles such as HONDO and MAGNIFICENT BODYGUARD that are available only in an anaglyphic format as opposed to one that can easily be encoded in any 3D format. Homemade 3D conversions such as THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK may make the cut if they look good enough, but not if they’re lazy to the point where one eye is simply a horizontally-shifted copy of the other eye, as is the case with JURASSIC PARK III.

Most of them are transfers from commercially-released 3D Blu-rays. There are also a few homemade conversions, such as of THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, that I selected to be part of the collection because of how good they looked.

The reason why I plan to upscale to 4K in addition to the Inficolor 3D encoding is so that they can look good on 4K television sets.

4:3 for fullscreen versions is because those of us who grew up in the '90s are used to the aspect ratio for home video releases and television broadcasts. All fullscreen versions will be optimized for 4:3 screens; the reason why I suggested an option for decorative bars in the first place is in case I wanted to put them within 16:9 pictures with a pan-and-scan flag, which I believe would get rid of the decorative bars on 4:3 displays.

“Widescreen” implies the original aspect ratio, I believe (e.g. 1.85:1 or 2.35:1). Occasionally, a fullscreen version will be in the original aspect ratio, such as THE WIZARD OF OZ; such releases will be anywhere between 1.33:1 and 1.37:1.

I now have a Mega account, finally, so I’ll be hosting them there as space allows. If an expired release is requested, I’ll upload it somewhere else and PM the links to the requester.

I can now confirm that the first batch of releases will take place sometime in Q3, most likely in July or August. The following features will be released as part of this first batch:

ETA: I just realized that on my current MEGA plan, I can’t release very many features all at once, so I’ve pared things down quite a bit for this first batch.

Unfortunately, real life has gotten in the way like I failed to anticipate, so the project is on hold indefinitely. Still going to do it, though; when a preview is ready, I’ll post it here.
