The Incredibles 2 - Theatrical Recreation v2.0

Back during The Incredibles 2 theatrical run, certain scenes contained strong flashing lights. This decision ended up in people suffering from seizures while watching the movie. When the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray, the flashing lights were heavily toned down.

I sadly didn’t get a chance to see this in theaters so I started recreating the flashing lights for the scenes so that I could see it how it was supposed to be seen, or as close as I can get. When I was about 80% done on the first version of this recreation, I stumbled onto the Star Wars 4K77 trailer and checked out the forums. I then decided to scrap what I had, switch to a 2k version sourced from an SDR 4k version, and get to work so I could release it to the public so the theatrical version was available to see it in high definition.

Information about Incredibles 2 theatrical release and why the changed it, provided by CatBus:

There was a warning displayed before the film when I saw it, but apparently, it was not in the film provided by the studio but was added afterward by the theatres. Even with the warning, late-arrivers could easily have missed it with very serious consequences. I think it’s surprising that a big-budget film even made it to screens looking like that at all. A film that could potentially injure a viewer, where all the lawyers on vacation that week or something?

More info on the re-edit here.

Edit 13/2/2019: I have finally got a high-quality version of this project released. Look for it on sharemania. Thank you for being patient with the project. It is currently in v2.3, and it looks fairly close to the original from what I’ve gathered from the trailer and a cam copy. I really hope everyone enjoys this release. The only major issue that I have seen is gradient banding, but that was present in the source I used. I didn’t notice it until I was working with v2.2.

Here is the comparison video between the 4K Blu-Ray and v2.0 of this project: https://vimeo.com/312985927

Once again, look for it on sharemania. Thank you for being patient! 😃

Feel free to leave any questions, comments, or suggestions.

How did you know what should be ‘flashing’? Hod did you know what changes to make and how did you do it?

Well I caught a cam copy of the film and that pushed me in the right direction, the rest of it was guess work. I used Premiere Pro’s color correction tools.

Holy crap! Did the movie really look like that in theaters? That’s nuts.

Thank you. I used Lumetri Color in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018. I just played with the exposure and contrast until I felt it looked good, then I had the shadows or the whites flicker from dark to light or light to dark each frame so it gave the flashing effect.

That is so cool man, how did you get it in 2K, or did you just get it from the 4k Blu-Ray, is it an Upscale? I love learning things from others and how they made these projects!

I downscaled it to 2k from the 4k Blu-Ray. And thank you 😃

EDIT: This is not intended to criticize narth at all for his effort. Presumably nobody will see his edit without full knowledge of what they’re getting themselves into, so no harm, good work, and as someone who saw it in the theatre, I can say it looks about right to me. Disney/Pixar, on the other hand, they should have known better.

Thank you for the information and links you provided. I still can’t believe that it was allowed in theaters in the state it was in. I figured Disney, if nobody else, would catch something like that. I’m glad they fixed it on the home releases, but I still believe there should be both versions available for people who can enjoy it. That’s why I have this project going.

I realized while rewatching the edit that one scene I actually forgot to add the pattern flashing, I had instead just had the shadows going so I’m going to further delay releasing the HD copies till v2.2 is up. Also, the 2k version will not be released after all.

That really does feel a lot more like what I saw in theaters, although I am not sure I remember the flicker being on all those later shots of televisions. But the interview & fight really seemed about right. It was not easy on the eyes.

When I seen it in theaters the whole theater lit up, like lightning almost, it was an interesting experience, but it was a pretty good movie

Having seen the theatrical version, I can say that your recreation is extremely close to what I remember. I am psyched for this. The original press release for the home video versions implied that the 4K releases would retain the theatrical presentation, and I was bummed when that turned out not to be the case. Thanks so much for making this!

Edit: I see the 1080p encode is coming soon - any ETA?

“You don’t really mean you’ll kill me, do you?” - Juror 8
“Silence, Earthling! My name is Darth Vader. I am an extra-terrestrial from the planet Vulcan!” - Calvin “Marty” Klein

Thank you and you are welcome, and I just posted the links to the 1080p encode. The recreation is finally posted. There are a few graphical issues, but it seems to be derived from the source I used. Hope you enjoy 😃
