The Imperial Symbol

I just watched RotS again in theatre tonight, and I noticed that on Anakin's fighter there is the Imperial Symbol...

But on the Chancellor's Podium in the senate building, it still bears the symbol of the Old Republic. I was just wondering basically what the symbol meant before it became the Imperial Symbol? Can anybody shed some light on that?

Are you sure? This wouldn't make much sense to me...

I recall reading somewhere (I've browsed the albums, but to no avail) that the symbol of the Republic (which constists of 8 "parts") was transformed by Palpatine (?) to Imperial symbol, which consists of only 6 parts. This represented the destrucion of peace, freedom, ancient ballance, whatever.... bla bla bla

So why would Anakin's fighter bear this logo in the beginning of the movie? In the end - that's another story
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

Yeah, there is a similar symbol, from which the Imperial Symbol was derived. However, I don't actually know what that symbol's supposed to be if the Republic uses that "old Republic" symbol. I wish I had a jpg somewhere of the symbol as I know which one you mean.

I also noticed it. Makes sense to me that they use the imperial symbol, when Palpatine became emperor he simply took that symbol to represent the galactic empire. The old republic symbol: well, he didn't have the time to re-paint every senate booth, did he?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

The military emblem of the Old Republic was an 8-spoke wheel. The Empire's is identical, except in that it has only 6 spokes.

What I found interesting was that the emblem of the Seperatists is a blue-and-white hexagon...6 spokes. Perhaps this is more symbolism??
Palpatine was pulling the strings on both sides of the war, why not combine both once he acheived his goal.

Yeah.

Once you get past the fart jokes and the rough, irritating sand, the PT has a really complex and subtle story. Thanks for clearing that up, Starkiller.

Imperial symbol...symbol of The Grand Army of the Republic, not necessarily the Republic itself. Or, in an ironic twist, it could be a Jedi symbol.
Which is the more foolish, the fool (the OT) or the fool who follows (the PT)?

I believe its for the Grand Army, now that you mention it specifically.
The Republic emblem was the one on the Senate podium (and is used in the sw.com databank backgrounds).
I don't think its a Jedi emblem, because as I recall, in AOTC, its on the helmets of the Clone Pilots (that fly the Attack Gunships). I'd have to go back and take a look.

Does anybody have nice images of all these different logos that they can share with us?

not sure if this is all of them but i think the ones out there (based on posts in this thread and what ive read/seen elsewhere) are:

Old Republic
Grand Army of the Republic
Seperatists
Empire
Rebellion
Jedi
New Republic? - did they have one for this

dont know if i missed any, or if any of those overlap, but i know i personally would appreciate if someone has nice hi quality jpegs of each of those.

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

The imperial symbol is a six spoked wheel, the new republic symbol is a red half circle with three points at the top and I don't know what the others are. The imperial symbol was originated from the clones. it wasw on the kamino flag. the old republic symbol can be found in the movie on the senate podiums, I can't remember what it looks like. I'm trying to find jpegs of the symbols will post sometime this week.
