According to TheOneRing.net, THE HOBBIT may be in line to begin filming in 2007.

TheOneRing writes, "The BIG news has finally hit. A Ringer Spy who was recently in the New York offices of New Line Cinema has reported that they clearly saw 'The Hobbit' on the film schedule for 2007. Here's what the spy had to say:

"Please leave my email anonymous as I have some very exciting news to report. I was in New Line's NY offices to discuss upcoming projects when I clearly saw something very intriguing on a year planner. 'The Hobbit' was clearly marked on what looked like July 2007. I couldn't exactly take a moment to investigate the calendar with my audience in the room, but it definitely said 'The Hobbit'. Lets hope this is a PJ project!"

Make of it what you will. Thanks to Richie for the scoop.

I heard this as well. Last I knew there were rights issues between New Line and....MGM I believe, and they were working out a deal. Jackson is producing the Halo movie, so it'll be interesting to see if he does it next. I hope it's him, so there's some continuity between it and LOTR.

I hope he actually keeps Ian Holm, Ian McK, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis in the film too. I'd like a complete and total tie-in between the two.

Beyond that, I'm all for an HBO Miniseries for The Silmarillion produced by Jackson. Would that not be uber-cool?

Agreed on the casting. They did a good job making Holm look younger for the flashbacks in the beginning, so I hope they nab him.

Silmarillion - Tried reading it...not my cup of tea. Just couldn't get into it for some reason. I enjoyed some of the back story on Sauron and the Elves and such, but I put it down after those chapters.

The Silmarillion is unfinished. Therefore, it lacks that polish and cohesiveness. I personally found it a real chore to read, but not bad looking back on it. Not sure I'd read it again, though. Being that it has a slow building plot, few characters that continue throughout the entire book, and no real hero, at least not one who is in the entire book, I don't see how anyone can do a mini-series with it.

I'd like to see a mini (maxi?) series on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series...that would be cool!

A well done Hobbit film would be nice.

Of course, so would a well done adaptation of the Chronicles of Prydain.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I'd be for that as well. I'd love to see them take a shot at pulling a narative out of those stories. It could be done, but it would be tricky. I tried to read it too, but to this point have not been able to finish it.

As far as the Hobbit, I'd rather almost see Jackson Executive Produce it rather then direct. I'd like to see him give someone who helped on LotR a shot at directing. I would like to see all those actors return, but I just feel that a Hobbit needs a different perspective behind the lense since the story is not nearly as weighty as the LotR. I'd hate to take a chance of Jackson taking a heavy handed, uber-serious approach to the movie like he did with King Kong. The Hobbit is much a lighter story, though with plenty of serious moments that could use Jackson's guidance. I'd want the world to look and feel the same - The Shire, Rivendale, The Goblins, Golem. They better not leave out Beorn as they did with Tom Bombadill!!! If they do it smart they could add a nice little forshadowing type of scene when Gandalf tells the story of having to deal with the "Necromancer!" They could show a short scene of clips with them doing whatever they did to get "rid" of him. They don't need to get ery creative with the script either, as far as drastic changes like they did with LotR. The Hobbit is much more straight forward. Obviously there would likely need to be a theatrical cut, and then an extended cut like LotR.

One other thing I thought would be neat, but I made need to be corrected on this, but aren't the elves that trap the dwarves after the spider attack the Mirkwood elves, and isn't their king Legolis' (sp?) father? I don't know why I'm thinking this, but I think that's how I heard it once. Well, it would make a neat cameo appearance during the scene where the Elven king is interigating the Dwarves to see Legolis standing behind, or near, the king. He would have no dialog as none is needed, nor is he even mentioned in the book, I just think it would be neat to see Orlando Bloom for a few seconds in the Hobbit. After all, he is an Elf, and the age thing shouldn't be a problem, right?

I gave up on it half-way through it, nary a week ago. The best part is the creation myth at the beginning. I can't imagine the Silmarillion being achieved without a ridiculous amount of CG going into it...

A movie or miniseries about the Silmarillion should be filmed as a documentary (more like a mockumentary), with narration and recreation of the scenes presented, but with no real character development or extensive dialogues.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Hence why I think a miniseries is the only way to do it. Since there are lots of individual storylines, each would adapt nicely to their own one-hour presentation. Kinda like From The Earth To The Moon, where each episode focused on a different set of characters, many of which weren't present in other episodes.

Usually when I think of mini-series, I think of "The Thorn Birds" or "Shogun" and the like that is basically one very long movie, divided out into parts to fit a TV show. Maybe something like you described would work better, but I still think that the incomplete nature of the Simarillion and the plodding story would make for some good episodes, and some episodes that would be almost impossible to watch. Unless one wanted to do some massive re-writing job. They did some changes for LOTR, but the Simarillion would need much more.

Unacceptable. Regardless of how much "lighter" the Hobbit may be than LOTR, Jackson must direct. Or should direct.

I dunno, I think it would be interesting to let Sean Astin direct it.

If Serkis does not wish to do Gollum again, it might be better to scrap the project.

You hit the nail on the head.

Jackson needs to do this, and bring back all the actors so we have total continuity. I love the LOTR movies, and they can only be enhanced if I have a Hobbit movie that can truly be places beside it.

Don't change a winning formula - as long as it still wins of course.

Ian Holm's too old...

I would personally go for Martin Freeman as the esteemed Bilbo Baggins of the Shire...
and throw him into learning how to act like Bilbo from LOTR...

just check out his pictures... there is something hobbitish about him.

I'm just hoping that he makes up with Howard Shore. How awesome would it be to hear his score thundering thought Jackson's blistering vision of the Battle of Five armies.

And he needs Shore and especially McKellen, as well as WETA has original LOTR team. Could he have Lee do a cameo for us Hammer fans ?

yeah but then again... I highly doubt it will be a 2007 release... big production companies aren't THAT secretive... especially about
something as big as this.. They'd release posters by now. And a website.

How do you know that New Line didn't just buy the rights to the old animated "Hobbit" movie, and are releasing new DVDs in 2007?
