How could you or anyone post in this thread yesterday and not mention that 38 years ago, Star Wars was released in theaters?!  For shame! ;)

I recently found a nearly 120 year old anthology book of historical primary documents that was being given away for free at my local library. It's pretty interesting to read, and the footnotes are pretty cool since they come from historians of a time when the Spanish-American War (which they refer to as the "Spanish War") was a current event

Wow, that's neat. My family inherited a large number of books from a school that shut down and was purchased for use as a factory by my dad's family, so we have a lot of history books from around the time of World War II, and some older. In grades 8 and 9, when I was homeschooling, in addition to my more up-to-date resources, I used a book from 1929 and another from 1946. It can be interesting to see the perspectives of the authors in relation to the way we view things now. The one book suggested current or recent newspapers and magazines for further reading on World War II. :)

What you are about to hear may sound ridiculous, but here me out.

As some of you may know, I've been thinking of making a series of fanfiction that is a crossover between the Whoniverse and The Magic School Bus. What does this have to do with history? Well, Story #3 will be a "pure historical" (no alien elements except for the Bus/TARDIS) that takes place sometime in America's history. Does anybody know of a battle or war involving Native Americans and the US army where the whole situation was a shade of gray (i.e both sides had equal amounts of honorable and dishonorable motives, it's hard to root for one side or the other)? It would really go well for a certain OC's character development.

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…

There couldn't have been any. All the natives were good.

;)

I'd help you if I was better versed in the specifics of American history, but the above is about all I took away from my school textbooks.

All the natives were good!?!   I thought they were all evil Godless barbaric savages, out to scalp all the white settlers and do dear Lord knows what to the white women.

They overcorrected when trying to make the textbooks more balanced. They skip over that aspect completely when teaching about the natives.

Well the natives had every right to fight back against the US army so any instance where they took things a little too far would be a shade of gray.

Though the Mohawks brutally murdered a bunch of French Jesuit priests, for instance, and that was before the British had much of a presence in the Americas.

A hundred years to the day…

The Hundred Days Offensive - 8th August, 1918 (World War One)

‘The Hundred Days Offensive was the final period of the First World War, during which the Allies launched a series of offensives against the Central Powers on the Western Front from 8 August to 11 November 1918, beginning with the Battle of Amiens. The offensive essentially pushed the Germans out of France, forcing them to retreat beyond the Hindenburg Line, and was followed by an armistice. The term “Hundred Days Offensive” does not refer to a specific battle or unified strategy, but rather the rapid series of Allied victories starting with the Battle of Amiens.’

I was thinking the other day about how this year is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. I had a great uncle that got the Purple Heart there. (The Purple Heart is the American medal for soldiers that get shot and survive.)

Dang, would have never thought of that.

Amazing how time flies though. 😉

It doesn’t fly for me. A year feels like at least a decade, but we’ve talked about this before.

Yes I know. In the future I can try remembering to add “except for you” to most of my posts if that will help.

Funnily enough, it feels like ten years ago that I was reading about how it was the 100th anniversary of WWI starting.

Did any of your children fight in the war, Frink?
