I am interested in this as soon as it’s available!
Hey guys, I decided to upgrade Lorang’s edit of the extended cut of The Hateful Eight, and I would like to make it more widely available. Here’s what I did.
Video:
All video elements are newly sourced. The main live action content is sourced from a 2160p web-dl. This means that this is an untouched download of the original Netflix stream. I believe this source is relatively new since user Clark Teddles mentioned earlier this year in a separate thread that there was no 4k version of this ripped online. Chapter cards are sourced from the Blu-ray as well as the “No Data” frame (more on that later). The overture and intermission cards have been cleaned up, and the red gradient in the sky is now gone.
The video has been encoded via handbrake with the HEVC codec with an average bitrate of 36mpbs (peak of the Netflix web-dl). This encode is technically UHD BD compliant but the file won’t fit on a 50gb disc. If 66 GB discs ever become publicly available, this will be a perfect contender for your disc drive.
Audio:
97% of this project comes from the 5.1 Dolby Digital plus audio from the Netflix web-dl. It has been edited losslessly and preserved losslessly in a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 container. The other 3% is sourced from Lorang’s original 5.1 AAC, also edited and preserved losslessly. These elements include the overture and intermission. Very light audio editing (crossfades, level adjustments and such) have been made so the different audio sources blend together. You will not notice them.
Changes:
I tried to remain faithful to Lorang’s original edit. I wanted to edit all of the content of the Netflix miniseries into a film format with the title cards and overture + intermission. This edit is actually frame-synced to Lorang’s edit, so if you wanted to use his 5.1 AAC, you could.
Lorang’s edit only has five title cards instead of 6, which is odd because there is a perfect spot for the 6th title card. I have re-added the 6th title card.
The Netflix stream has a single frame where the screen goes black with a 'No Data" logo. It’s odd to me that something like this could pass Netflix’s QA, and I don’t know how many people even know about it, but it’s still there in the stream to this day; you could check for yourself if you have Netflix. I have replaced this frame with the corresponding frame in the blu-ray and color matched it to the netflix stream.
Subtitles! I have added the subtitles from the Netflix stream, which Lorang’s edit was lacking. These subtitles have been frame-synced using the exact timing of the Netflix stream. They are muxed into the video in SUP format.
Chapters! I have added a chapter file to this edit. It uses the same chapter marks from the Blu-ray with a few alterations since the Blu-ray wasn’t always accurate to I-frames. Two additional chapters have been added for the overture and intermission.
What this isn’t:
The roadshow cut. Make no mistake, this is the version of the film that I prefer, but it is NOT the roadshow cut. This is merely the content of the Netflix miniseries edited together in a film format. I have made no effort to recreate certain roadshow elements like the Cinerama logo or the newer Weinstein logo. This is purely an upgrade to Lorang’s edit in every sense of the word.
Release:
The release is about 55GB. It’s the HEVC video with the DTS-HD MA audio, the SUP subtitles, the XML chapters, and a poster as the cover if your player supports that type of thing.
There is an extras folder with the synced SRT subtitles, an AC3 track that I created from the DTS-HD MA track, and Lorang’s original AAC. Also included are the bitrate plots for the source files, lorang’s edit, and my own encode if you’re a nerd like me and are interested in that.
HELP!:
Now for the big question: Who here can help me out with distributing this thing? I don’t want this to go the way of Lorang’s edit, where people are asking for the project with no luck in finding it. But on the flipside, I have done a couple edits on this forum before but I just can’t keep up with the barrage of DMs. I have my own life, and I sometimes go many months without visiting this forum. I want as many people to see this as possible, so I will only be sending this at first to people who are willing to host and share it in the future. Once I have a few volunteers, I will indicate them in this thread and hope they can sustain distribution in the future. You can still DM me and ask for it of course, but I cannot guarantee a timetable for when I will be able to get back to you.
I was originally going to post this in the other thread, but I figured it may be better to have a thread of it’s own.
You guys are the best, I hope you all like this 😃

I’m ready to congratulate you without having even seen it. I would recommend you check out the fanedit.org forum if you haven’t already. Great community for projects like these.
Nice! The version I’ve been wanting to see for a while now. Hoping to be able to see your version when ready.
Have you seen the Russian 4K rip? Higher quality than the blu-ray or Netflix versions, might want to check it out if you’re ever gearing up for a 2.0 release or anything.
Glad you revisited this.

I’ve seen it but I don’t love it. It’s tagged “DCP Rip” although it isn’t. It’s in 25fps, and it also has different color timing than the netflix 4k web-dl. Regarding a 2.0, unless there’s a major breakthrough with a new video source, or a major issue in the current release that I don’t know about, I don’t think I’ll revisit this.

You can convert audio and video to 23.976 with eac3to. Which version is closer to the color timing of the blu ray?

I know I could do that but it just really seems to be more trouble than it’s worth. The Russian version isn’t that great, it’s just a reencode from a Russian VOD.

There’s also a “DCPrip” on usenet although I’m not sure if there’s a difference with the Russian one.

Yeah that’s the same one. As stated before, it’s not actually a DCP Rip it’s a reencode from a Russian VOD

Has this been seeded anywhere? Or can anyone share that has it? I DM’d Dylan but he said (above) he’s not on here too often.
Cheers

I’d love to get this too, does anyone know if it’s been posted or uploaded anywhere?
So this is exactly what I ahve been looking for. I’m amazed no one has done it already.
Sadly it’s not to be found anywhere. 😦

So is the only roadshow stuff missing the Cinerama logo and the Weinstein logo or were scenes/shot still missing on the Netflix version? I’ve only ever seen the film on 70mm but it was during release so it’s been a bit and I don’t recall what may or may not be missing.
“Alright twinkle-toes, what’s your exit strategy?”
