I have these on VHS:

The Godfather - The Epic : 1901-1959 (3 tapes)

The Godfather Trilogy : 1901-1980 (4 tapes)

I bought them from eBay sometime ago, I've watched them and I highly recommend them. There's footage on them that hasn't been made available on any of the DVD releases.

That's not true. All of the deleted scenes have been made available.

I stand corrected. I haven't bought the Remastered release yet.

Is somebody working on this? I think the DVD is the best source for the extended scenes, and the VHS/Laserdisc can be used as a guide to show where to replace them and perhaps fill in any holes. If the deleted scenes are Pan and Scan only, the edit can go from widescreen theatrical to Pan and Scan extended. I'd love to see this done.

IIRC, The Godfather films were soft-matted 1.85:1 as opposed to hard-matted, which means to preserve the theatrical formatting for the deleted scenes, all we'd have to do is mask off the top and bottom of the frame, correct?

I just watched Godfather 2 last night. I think when arranged in chronological order ("Novel for Television"), the story of Vito coming up in New York becomes its own movie, which I like because it's much more interesting than Michael's story. The overall story grows less interesting as it progresses. I want to see every deleted scrap from Vito's story, and from Godfather 1.

I'm not sure that the films were matted--anyone with full and wide frames for comparison?

Has anyone yet made or found a VHS-rip on the internet yet, or would like to make it. I really want to see the movie to the full!

I have seen a fanedit of Vito's story all about the Vito scenes in Godfather 2 including his death scene at old age. With the inclusion of title cards it could have been an interesting watch, but with just the scenes pasted together it seemed something was seriously missing to make it complete or feel like a movie. Additional footage from that time would also come in nicely.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.
