More than hate really, most people would be amazed how much it has to do with Muslim eschatology. As much as we want to consider religion as merely a side activity and not a deeper part of our lives, this is not the case over there. Over there religion is an aspect that is very active in their lives and dictates the way their lives play out. So much more than hate is in the picture, or perhaps it is better to say that hate is based on something deeper, their religion. You can get free Korans sent right to your door, I wish more people would do that. It is a very interesting read, very enlightening.

Except that there is no more "over there," as you put it. It's in your midst, all of ours. Look at what is happening in Birmingham in the UK, for example. There are nationalized citizens born and bred in the United Kingdom that are committing radical acts of terrorism, based soley on the desire to disrupt Western ideology.

I think the point needs to be made that the majority of Muslims are a peace loving people who condemn the perversion of their religion, but there are some basic tenants there that non-Muslims have to be very, very cautious of.

Fundamentalist or not, they take their religion very seriously and their mythology is rife of violent symbolism and practices. It's something we in the West need to wrap our heads around. Islamic extremists don't understand tolerance, democracy, freedom and personal rights. They understand two things. Life and death. You are alive alive, or you are dead. They can't be reasoned with, it is a truth to them.

This is why people need to realize that this is not an "over there" problem, in this case I assume "over there" is the Middle East. In every major urban centre in the World, is a radical extremist group, Muslim or otherwise, who want nothing more than to see us all suffer.

I know it isn't an "over there" problem, I wrote the last post quickly and was refering to where it is most focused. It is "over there" that you have leaders and groups who try to fulfull Islamic end time prophecy. I know this seaps out into all parts of the world, don't misunderstand the point of my post. I just meant to say it is not so much a matter of hate, or rather that the hate has a purpose. Some people have a hard time believeing that a group could hate another group so much for no reason, I think it would be good for them to know that there IS a reason. Even if there are large quantities of peace loving Muslims, the fact remains that the Qur'an teaches some not so peace loving things. It blantantly says that Jews and believers in Christ deserve to sword.

I know this isn't related to the conversation at hand, but since we're talking about over-rated movies, I thought I'd bring this up. Am I the only one that thinks Blade Runner is vastly over-rated? I've managed to make it through once, but I don't think I could stomach a second viewing. Then again, I thought A Scanner Darkly was stupid as well, so maybe it's just that Philip K. Dick blows.

The first time I watched Blade Runner I barely managed to make it through the whole thing. After it was over I thought it was one of the worst pieces of crap I had ever seen. Over a year later I ended up seeing it for some reason, and I loved it. I don't know why, but the second had so much more to it.

I really like P. K. Dick's work too, he has some really great stuff. The guy was a total psycho (burnt out on drugs), but he really explorers some interesting themes in his works.

I know there are a good number of Blade Runner fans around here, anybody else feel it is better the second time around?

First time I saw Blade Runner was in 1992 or 1993; when the director's cut had its theatrical release. It wasn't until some time later I finally saw the original cut on video, and thought it was inferior.

It's a classic movie, and I'm looking forward to the "final cut" on DVD.

I first saw it late 90's in college. Although philosophy was part of my major, I found the whole thing a little too mish mashed. I guess I just didn't know what to expect, but the movie didn't impress me.

Blade runner overrated? Well that's a pickin'!

Blade runner is a fuckin' classic. Absolutely ridley scott's crown achievement. And that's saying a lot with his catalogue. The duellists especially, and Alien are among the best films ever.

It's probably the best vision of the future, or the most fascinating if you will. Taking cue from star wars where nothing is perfect and shiny (fuck you prequel future). We get a rutger hauer in a carreer peak, a perfectly understated role by ford, brilliants visuals/story/soundtrack etc.

A bunch of sci fi has been made before and after and not one comes close to Blade runner ( with the possible exception of SW and ESB).

Other sci-fi i enjoy: Outland, Omega man, Soylent green, T-1/2, Stalker, The thing, silent runner, gattaca, robocop, total recall, tron, salute of the jugger, A.I, Westworld, but like i said nothing comes close to Blade runner's genius.

The first time I saw it at all was in June of 2000 when SciFi channel aired the original theatrical version letterboxed. I remember reading an article on how it would be the first time in ten years that the theatrical version had been shown on tv. All I can really remember is being impressed by the visuals and the music.

A couple years ago I picked up the dvd of the director's cut, mainly out of concern that they weren't going to be reissuing it in a better dvd. Less than two years later, bamn, remaster. Yes, I have that as well.

Anyone who doesn't put Blade Runner in the upper echelons of great cinema, should be dropped naked on an island full of horny male monkeys witha bannana in their ass.

I have yet to come in contact with anything even remotely connected with Philip K. Dick's work that wasn't extremely retarded.

Blade Runner = one of the most over-rated movies of all time.

I'm not ready to commit to "over-rated" without a second viewing. But that's my leaning.

Funny you should mention bananas and monkeys Cassidy, cause it looks like we got ourselves a nanner split. So where is this island full of honey male monkeys? And who is going to go pick up Nanner and drop his off there for his exciting dream vacation?

Just finished the course here at school in bio.....How we all evolved from one single organism is beyond me. It's impossible...There are so many, many more reasons why it its not true rather that facts supporting it. To sum up me view, "Darwin was a quack."

So what are those many many more reasons?

Prove who wrong? Conservatives who may or may not believe in intelligent design? I would like to see you prove them wrong. So where is this proof that does the proving?

I think evolution from a single organism is just as silly as the idea of a being who has always existed deciding to one day to make a world full of life and to take seven days to do so. Ancient myth and scientific theory may be equally empty human ways of trying to answer an unanswerable question. Does man really believe he is so great that he can tell what happened millions of years ago when he cannot even tell what the weather will be like tomorrow?

Anyway Sean, what do you think about it? Why do you think that?

Well said!

I certainly lack the brain capacity to comprehend the "how", "what" and "why" of the universe. I think that's the case for everyone on this planet.

But since I exist, I would like to make the best of it.
