FYI

Saw that a fan edit of the Gangs of New York up on the Pirate Bay.

Here is the description:

"Gangs of New York: The Yoshimi Edit

Gangs of New York had all the potential to be a kick ass movie. Violent, bloody, grimey and just plain ugly. It even had Daniel-Day Lewis stealing the show as the unforgettable villian. Yet it failed.

Was it Leonardo De Craprio, with his on/off laughable Irish accent? Was it the uneven direction? Was it the utterly useless character played by Cameron Diaz? Just what went wrong?

Well, Yoshimi has a theory… that the movie could have been much better without the character Jenny (Cameron Diaz). What a good theory it is! Although the character cannot be removed completely, she has been reduced to a minor player in the whole scheme of things. Hell, she doesn’t even make an appearance until just over the half-way point! It cuts nearly 13 minutes from the film.

Yoshimi did a pretty damn good job overall. Some cuts were a little rough, but unavoidable. Most cuts are completely unnoticable. Check out the scene where Bill tosses the axe into the air and lets it come down onto the table!

I’m told that the next Yoshimi Project is going to be Good Night, and Good Luck. Can’t wait to see what that one will be like!"

It is always difficult to advertise for your own edits... Still: nice idea, and great to have a new editor around.

Hi, this is Yoshimi.

A post by boon23 led me to here. I am the one who has edited Gangs of New York. The edited film was set up with a torrent and was uploaded to Pirate Bay by ineptuser of www.gatheringofgeeks.org/forum.

I had wanted to edit this movie for a couple of years, and finally got around to doing it over a couple nights last week. I was kinda surprised at how relatively easy it was for the most part. Maybe my theory that the character played by Cameron Diaz really wasn't necessary was correct all along! Unfortunately, I had to leave her in a few scenes, particularly at the end, when she is walking with Leo. But, up until that point, she appears to be nothing more than a minor bit player in Leo's ressurrected Dead Rabbits gang.

If any of you watch it, I would welcome feedback

Thank you to the OP, for finding the torrent description and spreading the word.

The problem is that the film is such a mess that I don't tink Diaz is really one of the problems. Although apparantly her role in the final film was a lot bigger than it was supposed to be.

There is a longer cut out there somewhere that apparantly works better than theatrical edit, but I doubt that'll see the light of day.

Gangs of New York is a movie that seemed to me like it was in need of a fan edit, but I realized that it's a film that would benefit greater from having things reinstated rather than removed.

This movie was so loooong. I don't think stretching it with additional scenes would do it any good, but I could think of a cool 50 minutes TV special about the raging early NY.

Just got done watching it few minutes ago. Since I haven't seen the theatrical cut since it first ran in theaters, I was basically watching this blind. Overall, it was a very well done job for what I'm guessing is your first fan edit (am I right?). Yeah, some of the cuts were pretty rough but it seemed unavoidable given the content. Kudos to you, I look forward to more of your work.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

my dad thought that her subplot ruined the movie as well. I'm interested in seeing this...I'll let you know when I do.
