UPDATED ON JAN 24

FILMS 1-8 ARE COMPLETE AND AVAILABLE THROUGH PM

Foundation is a science fiction streaming series based on the award-winning novels by American author Isaac Asimov.

The premise of the story is that, in the waning days of a future Galactic Empire, a mathematician develops a theory of Psychohistory, a new and effective mathematics of Sociology, which can predict the future of large populations and foresees the imminent fall of the Empire.

The first season consists of ten episodes, which aired in 2021. The second season aired in 2023, also consisting of ten episodes.

DISCLAIMER

I have not read Asimov’s novels. But I have read many reviews and seen many video essays explaining how the series is loosely based on them and how the creators missed some of the key points of the original story.
I do not want to disappoint the book readers among us, but these fanedits do not try to fix that.
The purpose of this project is to approach the content of the series in a more engaging way while providing an alternative viewing experience.

That being said, any contribution from a member familiar with the original material (and also any fan of the TV series) is greatly appreciated.

THE PROBLEM

Although I enjoyed the aesthetics, the overall plot and the acting of the first ten episodes, the main problem for me was the pacing and story structure of the show. The characters, while interesting and complex, and the locations, while magnificent and impressive, were scattered across the episodes, which made it hard for me to follow the overall plot.

THE SOLUTION

With these fanedits, I attmept to arrange the entire narrative into a series of feature-length films. To accomplish this task, I have started by dividing the story into distinct segments -or chapters- each centred on the characters’ arcs and their respective locations.

This process resulted in 11 distinct chapters:

Season 1 Chapters:

  • Gaal Dornick’s Synnax: Gaal’s origins, the mathematical competition and her departure for Trantor.
    (Episodes 5, 1)
  • Trantor: Gaal’s first meeting with Raych and Hari Seldon, the destruction of the Strabridge and the trial of Hari Seldon.
    (Episode 1)
  • Journey to Terminus: Seldon and his followers on the Deliverance, Gaal’s hesitations about his plan, Seldon’s demise and Gaal’s escape.
    (Episode 2)
  • The First Foundation: the formation of the Foundation on Terminus, young Salvor Hardin’s relationship with her father, adult Salvor Hardin’s connection with the Vault, the invasion by Anacreons and Grand Huntress’ plans to seize The Invictus.
    (Episodes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, Episode 8’s flashback of Anacreon’s destruction and Episode 9’s flashback of young Salvor)
  • The Shift of Power in the Galactic Empire: the transfer of power of the genetic dynasty, the Luminism’s threat on the Cleon lineage and Brother Day’s departure for The Maiden.
    (Episodes 3, 4)
  • Gaal’s Awakening: her awakening and arrival at the Raven starship, the “ghost” of Hari Seldon and her departure for Synnax.
    (Episodes 5, 7, 8)
  • Brother Day at The Maiden: his arrival at the holy moon of the Luminist faith, his interactions with Zephyr Halima, his decision to take the Spiral and his journey back to Trantor.
    (Episodes 6, 7, 8)
  • Brother Dawn’s Challenges: his suicidal tendencies, his first meeting with Azura, the forming of their relationship, Brother Dusk’s suspicions, Dawn’s escape from the palace, his cature by the anti-Empire “rebels” and his rescue by Dusk.
    (Episode 4, 6, 7, 9)
  • The Commandeering of The Invictus: the exploration of The Invictus by Salvor and the Huntress’ party up to its arrival on Terminus.
    (Episodes 7, 8, 9)
  • The First Crisis: Hari Seldon’s return and Salvor’s journey to find Gaal.
    (Episodes 9, 10)
  • The Future of the Empire: Brother Day’s arrival on Trantor, the fate of Brother Dawn and the truth about the Cleon lineage.
    (Episode 10)

By organizing the chapters above into a cohesive and straightforward narrative, four two-hour-long films were crafted, covering the events of the first ten episodes.
In addition to the difficult and complex task at hand, I decided to alter the aspect ratio to 1.78:1, adding black bars to the top and bottom of the screen, thus re-framing each scene shot-by-shot. This creative decision arose from my desire to imbue my films with a more cinematic feel and to craft new dynamic and visually arresting compositions. While viewers may miss some of the original visual content, they will gain a fresh and visually captivating aesthetic.
Αdditionally, I have added hardcoded subtitles for Anacreon and Thespian dialogue and re-porpused the title sequence as the end credits of each film and added a title card within the first minutes of each film.

The same process was followed for the episodes of Season 2, resulting in 15 chapters:

Season 2 Chapters:

  • Return to Synnax: Gaal and Salvor on Synnax and their attempt to reactivate the Beggar’s Lament, so they can return to Terminus.
    (Episode 10 of Season 1, Episodes 1, 2 of Season 2)
  • Inside the Prime Radiant: Hari Seldon’s consciousness trapped inside the radiant and his attempts to escape.
    (Episodes 1, 2, 6)
  • Gaal’s vision: Gaal relates her visions of the future to Hari and Salvor about a warlod named The Mule who brings darkness and despair -and the death of Salvor- and the trio’s discovery of planet Ignis as the location for the Second Foundation.
    (Episode 2)
  • A New Empire: Brother Day’s assassination attempt, Queen Sareth arrival for the her marriage with Day, Dawn and Dusk discovering that Day has the authority to conduct memory audits on them and Sareth’s investigation about her family’s murder.
    (Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5)
  • The New Terminus: The flurishing of the Foundation on Terminus, Poly Verisof and Brother Constant spreading its holly mission and the the words “Hober Mallow” appearing on the Vault’s surface.
    (Episode 1, 2, 3)
  • Hober Mallow: The escape of Hober Mallow on Korell, his return to Terminus with Poly and Constant and Hari Seldon’s instructions to stop the imminent war.
    (Epidoes 3, 4)
  • Bel Riose: Demerzel briefing Empire that the Foundation is building alliances in the Outer Reach, the recruitment of Bel Riose to deal with them and his reunion with his presumed dead husband, Glawen Curr.
    (Episodes 1, 2, 3)
  • On Oona’s World: The trio arriving at Oona’s World, Hari’s encounter with Kalle and his resurrection in an actual body.
    (Episode 3)
  • The New Empress: Brother Day’s announcement to wed Queen Sareth and end the Genetic Dynasty, Sareth confronting Demerzel and her scheme with Dawn to end of Day’s legacy.
    (Episodes 6, 7)
  • Ignis: The trio meeting the Sighted and their leader Tellem Bond on Ignis, Tellem’s attempts to detach Gaal from Hari and Hari being held prisoner by Tellem and being found by Salvor.
    (Episodes 5, 6, 7)
  • The Negotiation: Hober arriving at the coordinate that Hari uploaded on the Spirit, his meeting with the Spacers and his encounter with Riose.
    (Episode 6, 7)
  • The Peace Offering: Poly Verisof and Brother Constant arriving at Trantor and being brought to the Emperors, the execution of Poly and Constant and Hober coming for the rescue.
    (Episode 6, 7, 8)
  • Attack on Terminus: The aftermath of the attack on Trantor, Hober and Constant escaping from Trantor and being captured by Riose, Day arriving at Terminus with Polly and his meeting with Sheldon, the attack on Terminus and the fight between Day and Riose.
    (Episodes 8, 9, 10)
  • Ignis No More: Salvor escaping her mind cell with the help of Hari from inside the Vault, Tellem trying to force her consciousness into Gaal’s body, Salvor rescuing Gaal, Hari returning to kill Tellem, Salvor dying, Hari and Gaal getting into cryosleep.
    (Episodes 8, 9, 10)
  • The Forever Empress: Dusk and Rue discovering Demerzel’s origins, Demerzel returning to Trantor, Dawn and Sareth escaping the planet and Demerzel decanting three new Cleons.
    (Episode 8, 9, 10)

Similar to my previous process, four feature-length films were crafted, covering the events of Season 2.
Unlike the previous attempt, these films diverge in terms of duration, ranging from an 1 hour and 36 minutes runtime being the shortest, to a 2 hours and 25 minutes runitme being the longest. Ideally, I would prefer for all the films to possess equivalent durations, yet I place a greater emphasis on the story rather than the length, and currently, I think I am happy with the outcome.
A title card within the first minutes of each film has been added, the title sequence serves as the end credits and I have added hardcoded subtitles for Thespian dialogue.

BIG UPDATES!

Film 1 is out!

Films 2-4 are coming soon…

In fact, all four films were ready months ago, but I couldn’t find the time to polish them and upload them. Plus the whole re-framing of each scene shot-by-shot due to the new aspect ratio definitely did not speed up the process.
But it actually turned out to be a wise move, since the second season of the show -which had not aired when I started this project- used the exact same aspect ratio! So, there will be a consistency between films and I won’t have a huge amound of work for the next instalments.

Speaking of Season 2, now that it is complete, I have started by mapping out each storyline and trying to figure out how to put together my cuts, but I do not feel confident enough to share any of my thoughts at this moment. Once I have everything cleared in my mind, I will post an update.

Ooh, interesting. I never got past the first couple of episodes but having it a bit more focused like this feels digestible. Are you cutting anything out, or just reordering?

That was precisely my intention with this project.
During editing Season 1, the main focus revolved around reorganizing the plot and sequences, with some minor tweaks made here and there.
However, for Season 2, I had to trim numerous lines of dialogue and get rid of a considerable amount of scenes.
Once I find a moment to collect my thoughts and articulate my creative process, I will make sure to share it with you.

Regarding Season 2

Similar to my previous process, I started by dividing the story into 15 distinct chapters.

From this process, same as for Season 1, four feature-length films were crafted. Only this time, it was impossible for me to reach the 2-hour-limit for each film. But my primary objective was and has always been to create straightforward and coherent stories, and I believe I have succeeded in this regard.

Another significant distinction from the method I used for Season 1 is that this time, I made the decision to remove multiple scenes and a lot of conversation lines from my edits. I understood that the writers of this season were going for a more carefree vibe and weren’t afraid to inject humor, but some of these choices didn’t sit well with me. Having said that, I realize that not all characters have to be serious and dominating and I can appreciate a little silliness sometimes. Just not in dramatic situations where the stakes are supposed to be high.

The first film that came up from my process will be titled Foundation: The Empire’s Dominion or Foundation: The Emperor’s Dominion and covers Return to Synnax, Inside the Prime Radiant, Gaal’s vision and A New Empire.

Runtime: 1 hour and 45 minutes
Episodes: 10 (S1), 1, 2, 4, 5, 6

The film opens with Gaal landing on Synnax and discovering Salvor in the Season 1 Finale and follows the majority of their plotline from Episodes 1 and 2. While tracking Hari’s time inside the Radiant, I repurposed some of the footage from Episode 6 and included a few short flashbacks from Hari’s early years and his relationship with Yanna. Regarding the royal marriage plotline, I used scenes from Episodes 1 and 2, along with some portions of Episodes 4 and 5, to establish Queen Sareth and Rue’s ulterior motives from the outset. The film ends with Sareth realizing that Demerzel is a robot, Dawn and Dusk starting to have doubts about Day, and the trio deciding to locate planet Ignis.

The second film, Foundation: The Prophet’s Revelation, covers The New Terminus, Hober Mallow, Bel Riose and On Oona’s World and focuses mainly on introducing the new characters.

Runtime: 1 hour and 39 minutes
Episodes: 1, 2, 3, 4

The film starts with the Vault re-opening on Terminus and the discovery of the dead claric on Siwenna by Polly and Constant. To reintroduce Polly, I made a brief dream sequence in which he is dreaming of his first encounter with Hari Sheldon, as Constant enters the tent. After that, we reunite with Gaal, Salvor, and Hari on Oona’s World, where we follow their storyline throughout the whole movie. Regarding Polly’s preaching on Siwenna, I cut out a number of dialogue lines and a ton of reaction shots, to make it a little more interesting and immersive. As we move to Trantor, we find Demerzel giving the Emperors an update on the Foundation’s operations and suggesting that they bring in Bel Riose to handle the situation. After that, we follow Polly and Constant as they return to Terminus and meet Hober Mallow for the first time on Korell. Following Demerzel on planet Lespsis and her encounter with Bel Riose, I cut out all reference to the events on Siwenna, since I completely removed that plotline from my edits. Bel Riose simply strolls through the Outer Reach without ever setting foot on the planet. The film ends with Hari returning to his human body, Bel Riose reuniting with his husband and Hober, Polly, and Constant leaving Terminus to follow Sheldon’s instructions. During their farewell, I cut out Constant’s awkward declaration of love and shortended their goodbye.

The third film is titled Foundation: The Sighting and covers Ignis, The New Empress, The Negotiation and Peace Offering.

Runtime: 2 hours and 8 minutes
Episodes: 5, 6, 7, 8

The film follows Hari, Gaal and Salvor and the majority of their time on planet Ignis form Episodes 5, 6 and 7, Sareth’s scemes againt Day and her alliance with Dawn, Polly and Constant on Trantor and Hober’s encounter with the Spacers and Bel Riose. The film ends with Hober interrupting the execution on Trantor and the rescue of Constant. This film only has a few minor cuts and changes—just a thoughtful rearrangment of scenes to make for a pleasant flow.

The fourth and final film of Season 2, Foundation: The Second Crisis covers War on Terminus, Ignis No More and The Forever Empress.

Runtime: 2 hours and 25 minutes
Episodes: 8, 9, 10

The film opens with Cleon I’s narration of his early childhood in the palace, up to the point he discoveres a secret passageway, from Episode 9. Cut to present day as the Emperors rush back to the palace to pick up their pieces. On Ignis, Gaal confronts Tellem about Hari, and Salvor tries to escape from her mind cell. As Day travels to Terminus, Dusk and Rue discover the secret passageway and find Demerzel’s chamber. While they were strolling through the halls, I inserted clips of young Cleon I exploring the place 610 years ago. After that, the movie essentially consists of the remaining plotlines from Episodes 9 and 10. I also cut short Hober and Riose’s toast on the ship, removing the reference of Becky’s butt.

A rough cut for all four films has been put together and right now I’m finishing up each one to get it ready for rendering. I plan to begin uploading them all by the end of November.

That’s all for now!

Films 5 and 6 are now available

The Emperor’s Dominion and The Prophet’s Revelation are the first two entries of Volume II, thus the first two films from Season 2. They also happen to be the shortest fanedits of this saga, which initially posed a challenge but eventually grew on me.

With these two films in particular, as I see it, Volume II serves as a reflection of Volume I.
In Film 5, Gaal, Salvor, and Hari are reintroduced in their transformed state, along with the Empire and their new enemies. This film may not end with a thrilling cliffhanger or a grand action piece, but it effectively sets the stage for what is to come. On the other hand, Film 6 introduces the newly established colony on Terminus and all the key characters associated with it, while catching up with our main protagonists before they embark on their main adventure.

My initial idea was to merge those two movies into one epic film (meaning that there would only be three parts in this Volume), by trimming numerous scenes and condensing storylines. However, I must admit that I am quite satisfied with how they turned out and I believe they serve as a nice introduction to this new chapter of my Foundation saga.

Films 7 and 8 are coming soon.

PS: While rendering the final films, I took the time to create English subtitles for all of my fanedits, which you can access in the respective folder.

May I have a link too please. I too couldn’t exactly get through much of Season 1 so some tight focus on the series may give me the motivation to finally get into the show overall. Read the first two books many years ago, however, I’ve forgotten much of the story sadly.

Still love what you did with His Dark Materials too so this shouldn’t disappoint! 😃

FILMS 7 AND 8 ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Happy new year, everybody!

I am pleased to announce that my Foundation Film Saga is finally complete!
This project has been a huge challenge for me, both in terms of expanding my editing skills and developing entirely new story structures, and I am really happy to finally share it with everyone in its complete form. I am still waiting for some kind of feedback and I am very excited to see how this massive universe is going to sprawil in future season(s).

Volume II wraps up with The Sighting and The Second Crisis, covering the remaing five episodes of Season 2. Both films are grand in scale and filled with action, essentially serving as a two-part finale. While there are large portions of Episodes 7-10 that remain unedited, I’ve had some creative fun reordering scenes and storylines to suit the film narrative.

Film 7 begins with Hari, Gaal and Salvor arriving on Ignis, followed by Day’s announcement of his upcoming marriage. We then journey with Poly and Constant on Trantor, witness Hober’s encounter with the Spacers, and explore the trio’s experiences with the Mentalics until Hari’s capture. The film ends with a cliffhanger, as the palace falls under attack just moments before the execution.

I believe this is the first film of the saga that ends with a cliffhanger, essentially serving as the first part of a larger story. However, in my perspective, this aspect functions effectively and does not leave the viewer dissatisfied. One significant and evident change in this film is the omission of Hari’s flashbacks from Episode 6. While these scenes provide valuable insights into Hari’s backstory, they don’t contribute significantly to the overall plot. Plus, if incorporated, they would have disrupted the film’s narrative as a whole. That’s why, in Film 1, I only utilized brief clips from this sequence to establish Hari’s relationship with Yanna and his childhood at Helicon.

Regarding Film 8, my main objectives were to effectively conclude the overall narrative in a cohesive and seamless manner, all while tackling the challenge of incorporating Demerzel’s backstory, from Episode 9, into the film’s narrative. To achieve this, I divided this entire segment into three parts.

The film begins with Cleon I narrating his early childhood in the palace, leading up to the moment he stumbles upon the hidden passageway on the mural. Cut to the present day, where we follow the aftermath of the Spirit’s attack. The story then branches out, following Gaal as she is captured by Tellem, Salvor attempting to escape her mind cell, Constant and Hober aboard the Spirit Rising, and Day’s journey to reach Terminus. On Trantor, as Dusk and Rue examine the mural, I integrated footage of young Cleon I entering the passageway and uncovering Demerzel’s prison cell. As they find the digitized projection of Cleon I, the screen fades to black, and then proceeds to delve into the remaining parts of Demerzel’s backstory. From that point forward, the narrative of the film remains largely consistent with the plot of Episode 10.

The main changes I made were altering Bel and Hober’s toast aboard the warship and repositioning the Mulle’s scene as a post-credit scene. Fun fact: Film 8 and the Film 1 happen to be the only two films that feature a post-credit scene, in both instances teasing future events, which I found to be a happy coincidence.

PS1: English subtitles for all eight films can be found in the respective folder.
PS2: Film 6 and Film 7 will be replaced in due course, because during the compression of Film 6, there has been a substantial downgrade in picture quality and, for some strange reason, Film 7 begins after 9 seconds.
