I haven’t yet watched this, but I’ve been looking over the changelog.
I can’t quite visualise this one from Visions:
- Change the Starkiller Firing sequence and Oscillator destruction so that Poe’s final bombing run doesn’t destroy the Oscillator. Instead, the weapon fires at the end of Rey’s and Kylo’s battle and the force of the weapon completes the Oscillator destruction.
What’s the motivation behind this change, and why it’s only in Visions as opposed to Starlight core?
This was in an old workprint. It was intended to give more weight to the weapon’s power and to have the destruction of the New Republic at the same time as Rey’s despair about Finn.
Poe would go into the Oscillator as usual but his weapons wouldn’t destroy it completely. He would fly out of an intact Oscillator, then cut to Ackbar stating how the weapon is damaged but still functional and it will fire in 2 minutes. Rey and Kylo then continue their fight and after that (which is almost exactly two minutes) the weapon fires. This shakes the ground where Rey and Kylo are fighting, and the already damaged Oscillator fully explodes. The firing sequence happens as usual and the scene ends with a new shot of Leia grieving and Rey returning to Finn in the snow.
I ended up cutting this for several reasons, partially because of its complexity, but primarily because it took focus away from our primary heroes in their most desperate moments to linger on the New Republic destruction, which simply doesn’t have the setup to justify the same feelings of loss.
Now in theory, the destruction of the New Republic would be important enough to warrant this focus, and perhaps the new Star Wars shows will do for this institution what the Clone Wars did for Anakin’s character and give us the bare minimum needed to care about it, and for this reason I’m planning on putting out a version of the edit with this change.
And presumably the other two changes in Visions, where Rey only dreams of Luke rather than visits him, are so that a theoretical TLJ edit can imply more time has passed on Ach-To for Rey’s training?
Yes, I wanted the standard version of this edit to play nice with TLJ in most of its forms, but Visions would be specifically paired with my future version of TLJ which is the main reason I’m holding off on those changes for now.
