The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas — Page 3

First of all, I loved the movie and I only had a few gripes. Finn helping Poe (and Poe accepting his help) seemed to happen too fast. Why does Poe trust this storm trooper all of a sudden? How does Finn go from a brainwashed imperial trooper to a skiddish but likable guy at the tip of a hat? Seeing Finn’s change of behavior, I remembered a clip from Star Trek Voyager where a Borg implant was inside seven of nine’s brain and gets deactivated, and I thought hey… that clip could be used to explain a very quick change in Finn’s behavior. For an added layer of depth to the character, what if Finn was simply a spy planted by the resistance to help Poe? Just ditch the idea that he was a real storm trooper outright, say he was a plant.

  • The Republic should not be resisting anyone in the beginning but Princess Leia (not general as it is a time of peace) is trying to warn politicians of the republic that something is wrong.

That’s the official story for the movie - It was just told really bad. There was supposedly a scene that was cut, with Leia’s envoy to the Republic senate on Hosnian Prime warning them and asking for support.
That envoy is the girl we see in closeup when the planet blows up.

what about having the charges Han and Chewie set blow up the oscillator (and the planet) […] ?

That wouldn’t destroy the whole planet. It’d take a thousand charges with more explosive power than I’ve…

So, Frink, you taking ideas for “The Ridiculousness Awakens” yet? 😉

I hope so.

Could we have Luke Skywalker peeing off the edge of a cliff at the end - only to be surprised by Rey when he turns around?

What other option did he have? He was screwed anyway, so may as well take the leap. Not like it would have made it much worse if it didn’t pan out.

That sort of joke is probably too crude for Frink’s tastes, (based on his Austin Powers edits) but one of the Hayden Christensen movies I scrounged up for him probably has a sound effect for that. 😉

Let’s rewrite that bloated crawl!
From my thread in the Scriptwriting subforum:

EPISODE VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi, has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER
has risen from the ashes of the fallen Empire.

To counter this deadly threat, the Republic
mobilizes a covert RESISTANCE led by
General Leia Organa, to gather allies from
the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

As the FIRST ORDER prepares a crippling
blow to the Republic, its dark forces gather
above the graveyard planet of Jakku…

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Maybe a cowl would hide Snoke’s obvious CGI-ness.

Yep.

I’d cut the moment Han fires his blaster while looking the other way with a nonchalant look. It felt more like a Marvel movie moment than a Star Wars one.

True! I just had to voice that somewhere. Perhaps he just ignores her?

One change that might make this film a bit different from ANH is making the main goal of building the Starkiller to take out the Republic capital and their fleet and the whole purpose of entering the base and trying to destroy it is to prevent that.
A countdown graphic could be added to rank up the tension and the base would be destroyed but too late to save the targets so the footage of the core worlds being destroyed comes after the weapon has been destroyed. This would make the ending even more bitter sweet because not only have we lost Han but also the Republic government and defences all in the final act.
The capital being destroyed wouldn’t be an exact mirror of Alderaan but instead would play out like Yavin 4 being destroyed and a few survivors looking on in horror from escaping ships.
The First Order may have lost their big gun but it has done it’s main job. They won.

The Starkiller did take out the fleet.

Yeah but that was before the attack. What I am proposing is the Resistance launch against the base to prevent it but fail, blowing up the weapon too late as the energy cannot be stopped.

THIS. Honestly I enjoyed the movie save for the handling of the Starkiller base. When I read today that deleted scenes were going to be included with the official BD release, I immediately headed over here to see how many threads for fan edits had started haha. The base should be priming to blow up the Hosnian (sp?) system NOT the resistance base. Everything can go down the same way but have the Starkiller base destroy the Republic system then Starkiller can go on and implode from the resistance attack. Having rebel personal, I mean resistance personal sitting on another planet waiting for an attack to prevent their destruction is too much for me.

Add staccato movements to the Rathars so they look more like stop motion creatures than CGI.

Did anyone ever try that with PT bits?

The only change I would insist on is this: re-instating the Fox Fanfare. Even if it’s just the music over a black screen, as long as the timing matches the other films. The movie felt a little naked without it.

I recently read descriptions of all the deleted scenes, and I don’t think any entire scenes need to be restored. What I would do is re-instate some brief shots that were cut (the Constable on Jakku for example). Basically anything that would give the movie just a little more breathing room, to slow down the pace just a tad.

Overall I loved the theatrical cut, and I don’t think it needs an overhaul.

Not sure if this has been posted in this thread before: http://www.slashfilm.com/star-wars-the-force-awkens-deleted-scenes/

But I think most of the cuts sound like they were good calls. A lot of the Leia ones were probably due to the acting involved, but the script sounds PT-like as well, if the novelization is anything to go by.

I’ll certainly be curious to see a lot of these edits if we get a chance (especially the weird ESB alternate angle idea. Damn that would’ve been controversial). But I don’t think I’ll end up wanting most of it included, aside from stuff that better sets up the state of the Resistance and gives some better impact to the destruction of NotCoruscant.

Lets hope that the Deleted Scenes will be finished and in HD

Get rid of Greg Grunberg and Ken Leung, JJ’s buddies from Alias, Lost etc. from the control room scene. That double whammy pulled me out of the Star Wars universe more than anything else.
