Nice crawl but the first line “Luke Skywalker has vanished” is so epic and nice.

My sentiments exactly. It draws you into the film immediately.

Agreed 100%. Personally the only thing I would change is adding in the 20th century fox to beginning, fixing the graflex lightsaber sounds to match episode V, and adding in deleted scenes if they seem necessary ( and if the timestamp and watermark can be removed of course)

I agree on Fox fanfare, so classic and needed. But even though the lightsaber clashing sounds a lot different (very different actually) I find it very unique and cool but preserving continuity would be something I still wouldn’t mind being done.

And if I had one biggest addition for TFA it would be added musical cues throughout the entire film. I have had a problem which is that I think the acting, writing, and overall execution of Hans Death is better than the prequels but I still find the Anakin/Obi Wan confrontation and the immolation scene more emotional. It might be cause I have seen it more, the incredible score might give it that extra push but I feel with right editing TFA lack of emotion and story importance could be drastically improved. ROTS just felt more real and had stakes and was emotionally driven whereas during the Force Awakens Rey never really fails miserably unlike Anakin in episode 3 who has a shit storm thrown on him and its beautifully tragic to witness. That’s what is lacking and a fanedit can hopefully do is make the story elements and emotional connection to the story greater. TFA just felt too light but as the first film of the trilogy once episodes 8 and 9 have run their course I might look at episode 7 a lot differently.

The music in the immolation scene is absolutely beautiful, but I don’t care about Anakin at all so the scene falls a little flat for me. Whereas in TFA not only Han a great deal but I also have an emotional connection to Kylo Ren so smaller stuff like Han touching Kylo’s face after he’s stabbed hits me harder than even the “I hate you!” line in ROTS.

I sadly disagree. Even though I want to like Hans death more.

Hey guys, posting here again.

I posted my thoughts for a fan edit months ago, but with the Blu-ray just coming out, I’d like to share my ideas and what I will definitely be doing in the fan edit.

Working title: SAVING THE FORCE AWAKENS
Fan Edit by That_OT_Ruler

*MAJOR CHANGES
-Color correction (Yellow finalized tint)
—Soundtrack is completely removed and replaced with music from the previous films
-Some scenes will have a complete sound overhaul (New sound mix with TIE fighters effects, etc.)
-Removal of the Rathtar squid sequence (The whole thing is going bye-bye)
-Removal of almost all fanservice and callback moments, except for shit like Rey’s helmet and the AT-AT
-FINN IS NO LONGER AWKWARD AROUND REY (Removal of stupid lines like, “Well this is what we look like.”)
-Put back in shots that were cut from the trailers
-FINN NOW SUCKS USING A LIGHTSABER

*MINOR CHANGES
-20th Century Fox logo and theme is implemented
-Custom title crawl?
-Removal of Poe’s stupid line, “You talk first, I talk first?”
-Removal of Poe’s other stupid line, “You need a pilot?”
-Removal of Finn’s yelling street slang, “DID YOU SEE THAT?!”
-Removal of extra explosion after TIE fighter sinks into sand
-Cut down Rey’s fight in marketplace
-No gag of Finn drinking water next to giant beast
-Other miscellaneous dialogue removal (I saw the movie 4 times, but I can’t remember everything)
-Finn no longer whooping after hitting TIE fighter
-Remove entire pointless sequence of Finn talking to BB-8 and asking him to tell Rey the location of the Resistance base
-Remove line, “You got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”
-Remove Rey telling Han that he did the kessel run in 14 parsecs
-Removal of entire Rathtar squid scene. It just cuts from Han talking to Lord Snoke
-Cut out Chewie being injured to keep continuity with previous cut
-Other miscellaneous dialogue cuts during scene with examining map
-Remove the reactions of the people watching the planets getting blown up (So unrealistic)
-Remove Maz’s awful line, “A good question, for another time.” (Basically, the writers acknowledging they wrote a shitty script)
-Trim down and cut out shots and parts of the raid on Maz’s castle
-Re-insert X-Wings hovering over water shot from the trailer
-Cut down Kylo chasing Rey in the forest and put in music from EA’s Battlefront
-Cut out the interrogation sequence between Rey and Kylo (There’s no point to it)
-Cut out Kylo’s thrashing around saber rage
-Cut out more jokes with Finn
-Reinsert Kylo walking in forest shot from Teaser 1
-Finn’s fight with Kylo is much shorter, and downright pathetic. Finn lasts less than 40 seconds
-Rey and Kylo’s fight sequence is put together (It doesn’t cut away to X-wings)
-Movie fades out on Luke’s face, not the awful helicopter shot

Those are basically all the edits I plan to fully implement. When you watch a movie in the theater a number of times, especially with a photographic memory, stuff sticks with you.

No deleted scenes will be put into the edit, as the Timecode problem makes it impossible.

Now, this is where I NEED YOUR HELP. I’m not sure what the 7.1 audio track will be like when the Blu-ray comes out. Will the music be present in every channel? Or will the music be in its own separate channel? Regardless, I NEED SOMEONE TO HELP ME remove the music from the film, leaving only the vocals and sound effects. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS to make this edit work.

I also need help with creating a new title crawl, something similar to what HAL9000 did for his prequel edits.

YOU WILL BE CREDITED IN THE FILM FOR HELPING OUT.

I would like to thank you for reading, and I can’t wait to share what I’m going to put together.

Can you explain the yellow finalized tint and, if it means what sounds like, explain why?

After a couple slightly iffy shots in the previews, I ended up being quite happy with the color pallette overall. Some parts did get a bit blue, but there was a decent variety in grading, including a lot that was neutral and vibrant.

He’s gonna take a piss on the film.

Seriously. When you take a scene like Kylo’s interrogation of Rey, which is pivotal to her development, and call it “pointless,” I wonder what you’re even trying to accomplish.

Also, what is “street slang” exactly and how is it summed up by “Did you see that?”

Yeah, no offense, but it sounds like it’s going to be a much more typical cold and bland Hollywood film. It’s interesting because the main complaints are that it was uninspired and didn’t take risks. And this seems to take it further in that direction.

On the other hand, it’s a similar technique that some PT editors use. Cut the heart out of the film (on account of disliking the heart of the film) in order to leave a barebones version that simply updates the viewer on what is going on in the Star Wars galaxy. Only, in my opinion the difference is that this film needs no such thing done to it.

But yes, the interrogation cut goes well beyond the ones that simply seek to remove characterization and humor.

But I don’t expect to relate to people who disliked this film. If I ever watch an edit, it will have extremely minor changes. So I don’t expect to convince anyone of anything. But the color? I must say I didn’t expect anyone to say they wanted it yellow.

I like a decent percentage of these changes but there’s a few that confuse and intrigue me:

FINN IS NO LONGER AWKWARD AROUND REY

Finn has probably never flirted with a girl in his life so him being kind of awkward is natural though it can me cut down some.

-FINN NOW SUCKS USING A LIGHTSABER

Finn sucks with a lightsaber in the theatrical version too. He get’s beat by TR-8R and get’s decimated by Kylo Ren. And no, him getting a lucky shot on him doesn’t constitute him being skilled; he got his ass kicked. He got his ass handed to him so bad that Kylo could have killed him in his first pass which lasts about a whopping 8 seconds. I shit you not.

-Removal of Poe’s stupid line, “You talk first, I talk first?”

I thought it was funny. Inappropriate but funny

-Removal of Finn’s yelling street slang, “DID YOU SEE THAT?!”

???

-Removal of extra explosion after TIE fighter sinks into sand

Scientifically it’s possible but I think it was a little much. I’m probably going to remove it from my personal edit as well.

-Finn no longer whooping after hitting TIE fighter

It’s stuff like that and Han’s laugh after he destroys his first TIE Fighter with the turrets that make the film feel lively.

-Remove entire pointless sequence of Finn talking to BB-8 and asking him to tell Rey the location of the Resistance base

Good catch. Now that I’m thinking about it the scene doesn’t further the plot at all. When Maz’s Castle get’s sacked and The Resistance saves the day Leia and them go to their base anyhow.

-Remove line, “You got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”

I’m just going to remove the cute boyfriend line

-Remove Maz’s awful line, “A good question, for another time.” (Basically, the writers acknowledging they wrote a shitty script)

Well considering that they were all in danger that wasn’t the best time to talk about how a lightsaber was obtained.

-Cut out the interrogation sequence between Rey and Kylo (There’s no point to it)

Character development? Also it’s theorized that him going into her mind and vice versa is what gave her certainty that she could use the force in a proficient way.

He’s gonna take a piss on the film.

xD. I like that. Actually, it’s a yellow color tint that is meant to replicate the colors of A New Hope.

As for the interrogation scene, there’s no real point to it, as the force awakens inside her when she touches the lightsaber in the previous scene. You could say it further develops her ability to use the force, but I found it more interesting to see her grasp the concept of the force on her own, without having someone trigger it. The other reason is, I found it more dramatic for Kylo to only reveal his face later, when his father asks him to do it.

As for the street slang, Finn yelling, “Did you see that?! Did you see that?!” just sounded like something from a generic modern action movie, not Star Wars.

If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to comment back. Thanks!

You mean the yellow color specifically in Harmy’s 2.5 that was later determined to be partially a mistake that I did in fact spend two months removing. Haha, interesting choice unless you’re referring to another yellow source. 😉

Already does.

There is nothing about that that is “street slang” and also you’re probably a racist.

-Finn no longer whooping after hitting TIE fighter

Are you just trying to remove any sense of personality from Finn?

-Remove Maz’s awful line, “A good question, for another time.” (Basically, the writers acknowledging they wrote a shitty script)

More like acknowledging that providing an explanation would be pointless and unnecessary and only serve to waste time.

-Re-insert X-Wings hovering over water shot from the trailer

Already in the movie.

-Cut down Kylo chasing Rey in the forest and put in music from EA’s Battlefront

This sequence has easily some of the best music in the film.

-Cut out the interrogation sequence between Rey and Kylo (There’s no point to it)

Except it’s the whole reason Rey was kidnapped.

Lol, it is partially influenced by that, but in all honesty, some of the colors in TFA really bothered me. Way too many blues. So, I had to apply a yellow tint to get some of the colors back to how they would’ve looked in the original trilogy.

That might work well for a few scenes, but I strongly advise against just applying it to the whole film. Most of it looks great or at least better than it would with yellow thrown on top.

Not sure why I’m discussing it since I don’t like your other changes. I guess those ones were more expected from some of the people around here.

Because the soundtrack disappointed me greatly. Simple as that. It’s my edit.

But now he’s even worse than he already was.

How does that make me racist? I just don’t think that kind of modern talk sounds right in a space opera that takes place “a long time ago.”

Just some of the dumb moments. The rest of his scenes are all intact.

They could’ve summed it up in a couple seconds. Bringing it up at all without answering just isn’t necessary either.

-Re-insert X-Wings hovering over water shot from the trailer

Already in the movie.

There was another shot of the X-wings that was cut.

-Cut down Kylo chasing Rey in the forest and put in music from EA’s Battlefront

This sequence has easily some of the best music in the film.

I disagree.

-Cut out the interrogation sequence between Rey and Kylo (There’s no point to it)

Except it’s the whole reason Rey was kidnapped.

Kylo doesn’t get the chance to interrogate her.

Why? So people can bitch online on how they didn’t explain it adequately enough?

Kylo doesn’t get the chance to interrogate her.

Why wouldn’t he interrogate her as soon as possible? They were kind of in a race to find Skywalker so there’s no reason he wouldn’t interrogate her.

I just don’t think that kind of modern talk sounds right in a space opera that takes place “a long time ago.”

“Did you see that” whether said or screamed is not modern at all though…

You’re honestly telling me “did you see that?” is a line that would have felt out of place in the OT? Luke easily could have said that instead of “I got him!” Was Han’s “Great kid, don’t get cocky!” not “street slang” too?

-Finn no longer whooping after hitting TIE fighter

Are you just trying to remove any sense of personality from Finn?

Just some of the dumb moments. The rest of his scenes are all intact.

What about Finn being excited that he hit a TIE fighter is dumb?

Literally no explanation would have satisfied people like you.

Except it’s the whole reason Rey was kidnapped.

Kylo doesn’t get the chance to interrogate her.

What was he doing instead? Does Rey just escape as soon as she gets there? We never get to see her use the force before she tricks the stormtrooper?

People like me? Jeez, I don’t need a grand explanation or something, but to bring it up, just to ignore it, is purposely being lazy. I’m cutting the line of Han asking and her shrugging it off, because the moment served no purpose in the long run. Bringing it up and not answering = pointless. I don’t care what the explanation is, I just want something. That’s it. No, I wouldn’t complain about what I got.

I have to admit that I find most of your changes would make me not have as enjoyable of a experience. Especially removing the entire score??? Ridiculous. Very difficult as a side note but Williams gave us great music, maybe not as great as the originals or episode 3 but the March of the resistance, I can fly anything, Kylo rens theme, Jedi Steps, Rey’s Theme!!! I advise against entirely removing a great soundtrack that people spent hours upon countless hours creating specifically for this film.
