Ummm... Carrey is a comedian as well. That's the problem right there. His manic comic performances soured him to the Academy regardless of what else he has done since that time. Robin Williams is a comedian who has also done drama. Much more so than Carrey has. That's why we're saying that it'll take years before he earns the Academy's respect. Once he's done as many dramas as Williams and can do so convincingly so that everybody can forget who he once was, then it'll happen. I'm not saying Eternal Sunshine and Man on the Moon are not convincing pieces of dramatic acting. They've just come really soon after his manic comic turns. They still can't take him seriously. Say he had been dramas for another five years and then did Eternal Sunshine, I think he would have been nominated and would have a very strong chance of winning.
I agree they don't tend to give the award to comedians. But Ric seemed to think the Acedemy had somthing against Carey himself, not just his profession.
