Thanks for the thoughtful response. Sorry about going dark there for a while!
Your description above is right on! I am so glad to hear that the film resonated with you, and to hear that what I was trying to do worked, in that you understand the story in the same way as me.
I do think “denial and depression” are what Luke is experiencing, and I agree with your analysis, that Luke is really in denial of death, the deaths of his friends that he has foreseen, and the death of the Jedi religion which he knows must happen but he is afraid to let it go. But in finally letting go he fulfills his true purpose. That is one powerful idea that hit me while creating this edit.
Thanks for your suggestions, here are my thoughts:
-
This is a good suggestion. I would have to review the footage to see if it is a feasible edit. I am not currently working on a v3 but if I do, I will take a look at this. I don’t mind the lightsaber too much because it is clear that it was a reactive move that he immediately regretted, but it would be cool to show that Kylo overreacted as well.

I think this reluctance to destroy the temple helps us to understand that Luke knows that the temple must be destroyed but it is still hard for him to do it. Even here he is still holding on, he finally lets go when he sacrifices himself at the end. Also I think it would be difficult to make a compelling scene without the Yoda ending with the available footage. The constraints of fan editing.

I have considered making an edit of The Force Awakens, but it was hard for me to think of many significant improvements that I could contribute. There are many fan edits of The Force Awakens that get pretty close to as good as you can get. My favorite I have seen is “The Starlight Project”. Next time I watch it, i’ll keep this in mind for improvements like you mentioned.

In the Luke/Leia scene I was trying to show Leia as a force ghost because she has just passed on and that is how Luke can communicate with her, as she has become “one with the force”. Also Im not sure what the improvement would be to moving it earlier.
-> I definitely would like to improve Kylo’s death scene, but like you said, I don’t know how it could be fixed. If there was some way to cut back and linger on him lying there alone it would be very helpful in showing that this is in fact his death scene.
Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!
