Those are single-layer. Dual-layer discs can be gotten just about anywhere that sells discs. Verbatim is a good brand. If you aren't an eagle-eyed quality buff, the degradation in quality is pretty negligible.

Could someone post a major example of the difference in quality?
I have the DE episode IV v3 on a disc and I see almost nothing wrong (SL DVD-RW)

Well, just so I don't derail this topic any further, I'd just like to end it by thanking those who explained everything for me.

So, how'd the premiere go?

Yeah, lol. About three people besides film club people. But whatever, our advisor's kids were there and they liked it. I think not as many people came cause we didn't advertise on the morning announcements. Ah well, ROTJ might be shown during a two hour late start, so people who show up early will have nothing better to do than come and watch Star Wars!

The DVDs really 7.37 gigs, I don't remember where I got the 8 gig number I reported earlier, maybe I was looking at my 'export folder' and there were some extra files in there or something. Anyway all the better.

So I guess I'm seeding it at demonoid. I gotta get jumping on Jedi so I'm leaving this the way it is, but I'm coming back to it after I get some feedback. It's not bad or anything, just some little things. Email or pm me for trade.

For feedback, go hogwild! I need to learn. If you have specific tips for me (adjust the hue here, up the saturation there...) then that would be a real help as well.

So it'll be just a DL disc? Great...

I'd love to have this; I just don't have DL discs, can't edit them to be SL *is damn near computer illiterate next to all you guys*, and don't have the 04 or 06 DVDs yet.
*is planning on buying the official DVDs* Actually, I'm hoping to buy them so I can download this without a burden on my conscience. Honestly.
I wish you luck on a V2 once you have feedback.

Fucking hell, you have no place to be angry here. This (and other projects that I've heard people moan about the use of DL discs on) is something that someone did for free out of love of the work. There is absolutely no room for you or people like you to criticize, suck up and fucking deal with it.

bkev, I'm not talking to you here, you were very respectful in your post. Figuring out how to shrink a DL disc to SL isn't too hard if you just look around.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Some people can't download DL. Maybe they don't have the hard drive space, or maybe they share a computer with someone and that person doesn't like there internet connection being slowed down by a file that size being downloaded. I agree that it is up to the editor to decide how it is released, but you have to understand a persons predicament before yous start assuming that they are too lazy to shrink a movie.

PaulisDead2221, I have started to download and saw some of the color corrected footage already, it looks gorgeous can't wait to have it all. Now, I now this is a lot to ask but since you have already done the color correction on this. Would it be possible to get the 2004 edition color corrected with no changes made? I know a lot of people will disagree with me but aside from the color fuckups and Boba Fett's new voice, I like the 2004 edition, just wished the colors were not all messed up.

Again, Thanks a lot for your work so far.

I'm still getting this, DL or SL. Just as DL I just gotta do extra work with it using dvd shrink.

I never said too lazy. I don't like downloading DL DVDs myself, I'll usually trade for them. All I'm saying is that they don't have any room to gripe at all.

Had a chance to look at some of the first half, and as requested on the 'noid, wanted to make some observations, PaulisDead2221. First, overall the colour looks MUCH much better than the Official DVD release, it doesn't feel so much like a screwed-up mastering of the film. And thank you so much for keeping this as a DL release! There are a couple of little things though which I noticed while watching on the PC through VLC. First, the title card and opening crawl seems a bit dark and red to me. I guess it's open to interpretation what colour the text actaully is, but it SEEMS to me like it should be more yellow. similarly the establishing shot of the stardestroyer after the pan down seems very dark. Not sure whether this is due to the source or not, as I haven't opened up the LFL release of Empire in a while. I don't think it's a player issue, as the Hoth stuff immediately after looks great - nice, bright and overall white! There's a couple of shots at twilight and evening which I was a little suspicious of being a little "LFL creative-decsision blue", but I guess you can always argue that it's night time. The first shot of the Imperial fleet has some weird black crush issues which renders parts of the BG ships BLACK. Don't know if you guys pushed the contrast on these, or brightened up badly contrasty source material which just revealed the problem, but I don't rememeber it being there before. The shot of the transport and Xwings leaving Hoth looks really desaturated, almost to the point of being grayscale. Again, is that the LFL DVD which has caused the problem, or the histograms - who knows? The other issue which I'm kind of on the fence about is the cut and paste of LD material into the edit to replace altered scenes. I love to see the original stuff back, but the grain suddenly jumps out at you like crazy, since Lowry pretty much destroyed the film grain in the film. It's probably a choice between grain or some combination of blurs and softer, less detailed replacement footage, so I can see the dilema. OCP's approach of creating mattes of just the needed areas of each shot was I think a little better, if not as "authentic" and certainly more time consuming. Lastly, I guess we're just going to have to come to terms with the fact that the lightsabres are more or less totally fucked in the carbon chamber. You guys have fixed the pink, but they remain a little dirty-orange, and witthout creating CC mattes for each blade for each shot, I think they may not be salvageable.
Anyways, after all that niggling and nitpicking, overall a really nice job, the best of the released colour correction projects, and a great addition to the few real restorations which have been done. Thanks for sharing this with the community, and bring on ANH and RotJ!

I have yet to see the vintage edit (and won't till I can buy the GOUT from somewhere reliable) but I'd like to point out this shot posted before that shows the grain that INv8r_ZIM pointed out.

I'm sorry but search function does not work very good, Did someone posted instructions on how to use the color histograms to correct the 2004 editions?

Instructions on page 2. I wrote one for the histograms specifically, and Desree wrote one for vd_hue/histogram use. Both on the same page, Desree's comes a few posts before mine.

INv8r_ZIM, you're right about the video noise. My program has a denoiser, it looks terrible, loses a lot of detail. It didn't occur to me until now that avisynth has a denoiser. reddish-orange sabers? I must have moved the hue too far in some shots. I can bring it back and get a more pure and consistent red. About the desaturation, a little of it is histograms, a lot of it is the DVD itself. I know in a couple shots R2s dome was like neon blue, like when he's scanning for Luke and threepio comes and gets him. I had to kill a lot of the overall saturation there and in the end threepio went a little faded in those shots. Anyway, thank you.

How's everyone's download speed going? I'm giving as much upload speed as I can but I'm also downloading the HD broadcast of ANH (for no particular reason...). How're people's percentages going?

So let me get this right. The Vintage Edit currently at Demonoid is a Work in Progress and after ROTJ is done TESB is going to get another go over?

The reason I ask is it will take me a while to download 7-8 gigs so if the sabers are going to be revisited and other such fixes I'd rather wait. I haven't started dl'ing this one.

Considering the source material being used here is slightly better compared with OCP's I'd have to say leave it the way it is (although again I'm yet to see this). Some of the grain in OCP's shots were noticeable no matter how much he combined footage. But with what he was working with it was the best he could do I suppose, I'd expect this edit to be better.

Thanks again for all the work you are doing and getting it out there for us to enjoy.
