Hello - newbie here.

Hello - so I've been a lifelong Star Wars fan, but with the death of my final VHS player, I'm no longer able to watch my favorite (the version I grew up with) version of the films - the 97 SE releases.

I did some googling, only to find more questions than answers...I'm still uncertain as to whether or not this version (97) has a DVD release, or not.

I'd like to basically save myself the time of ripping my (rather worn out) VHS tapes and converting them to DVD, and perhaps purchase a 97 SE dvd if possible.

Help me out here!  Hopefully someone can help clear things up - I can't stand the '04 dvds!

Thanks!

No, there isn't. But I think there are some preservation projects out there of the 97 laserdiscs.

Start browsing the preservation threads.  There's a lot going on out there, and a lot to wade through.  But it's exciting reading.  And although most of the efforts have been on pre-SE preservations, I'm pretty sure there are 1997 preservation projects as well.

For the '97 release, you can try out the G'Kar releases, which are sourced from digital broadcast tapes so they're pretty high quality (though DVD compression causes some artifacts.) You could also try out Lee Thorogood's preservation of the PAL laserdiscs which have the added feature of great 5.1 audio tracks.

If you're limited to NTSC, then you could get one of the older laserdisc preservations. However, I would recommend holding out for Dark Jedi's V2 of the 1997 SE which has the digital broadcast video combined with 5.1 audio.
