Ooh, 5.1 surround.  I was interested originally but now I'm much more interested.

Freakin' sweet. Now all I have to do is decide whether to watch this or the AVCHD version on Friday.

If someone with access to newsgroups (I, for one, don't have a subscription and my ISP doesn't include free access) could then mirror that to another uploading system, that would be great. I totally understand why you avoid torrents, Ady, but for some of us that's the only option.

Oh, I wasn't aware that giganews had a trial version. I may have to check that out.

14 days free. If you cancel before then, you don't get charged. I'm planning on canceling as soon as I've tested the disc.

Thankfully it is a DVD-5, I don't think my dl speeds are high enough to get almost 10 GB of content in 2 days.

What about fx shots? Like in the battle of Hoth, which was comletely recomposited for the SE and looks better but a lot less old school and I love that old school effects look, is this preserved here?

And also, is there any chance we'd be getting this in HD? I know the quality changes would be more apparent but I'd still prefer to watch it in HD that would switch to SD quality sometimes then to watch SD the whole time. That's one of the reasons I don't watch ANH:R, because it's not HD.

You know most blu-ray players have pretty great upscaling

Just sayin'

Don't believe everything you have heard about them completely re-compositing the Hoth battle. That is rubbish. I proved this when i was starting the Hoth battle for ESB:R. Even in the SE documentaries when they mention they recomposited the cockpits to remove the transparency was just lies. All they did was lower the black level as the cockpits are all still transparent. There are one or two  very minor differences in the battle and that's it

I did mention in the first post that this would not be a 100% authentic recreation as this is not what i was aiming for.

And you won't watch ANH:R just because it's in SD? So you only watch stuff that's in HD then? Limiting yourself a bit there.

That's an understatement. Reminds me of [and this is based on someone I know] a kid who goes into a video store, looks at the New Releases section, sees nothing that interests him, then leaves. Nevermind that there are thousands of good, slightly older movies on the shelves. (oh no! Slightly older!)

That same kid also refused to watch something I had on VHS because it was on VHS and wouldn't look as good as DVD. Nevermind that it wasn't available on DVD... He also won't play older video games because they don't look as good, which is lunacy.

Eventually, we will look back at current HD standards and think it's very quaint. That's just the way it is, and that really conflicts with some people's views on what is "good."

If it isn't available on VHS, you shouldn't try to make him watch it on VHS.

No, no, no, not won't watch, I did watch it and I loved some aspects of it, what I'm saying is that when I want to watch STAR WARS and I often do, ANH:R is not the version I go for and there are other reasons for this than it's not being HD; I like the originals and even though you've done an awesome job on ANH:R it is just very much not the original.  And I really like HD so when I want to watch STAR WARS it's either the GOUT or your brilliant AVCHD as it is HD and also has the worst SE flaws removed so it's as close to the original an HD version is gonna get (or has got so far). Thanks a million for that. If this was HD it would definitely become my prefered version of TESB but if not I'll just stick to the AVCHD or perhaps use this one for a partial despecialisation of the AVCHD just for my viewing (stuff like the orig. Wampa scene or that added window with elevator with f*cked up continuity...)

Now to the SE vs. OT Hoth battle. I did a lot of comparisons back when I got my 1st OOT VHS and was disapointed that all those fx scenes I admired on my SE VHS frame by frame as a kid, thinking how awesome the fx were for the time they were done in, were probably digitally tweaked:

The mate lines are gone in SE, motion blur is added, the speeder in the background is replaced.

The same here, plus here the laser blast is apparently enhanced.

The Hoth sequence definitely didn't have two or three shots re-comped. Probably more like a dozen. The cockpit shots look like they were just darkened to hide the transparancy though, but most if not all of the speeder shots were re-touched and in some cases had different compositional elements--subtle, yes, but nonetheless re-comped. That's why the sequence had very little grain in 1997. The thing should be grainy as hell, and the GOUT is a testament to that.
