I didn't understand why, when I heard the news of Star Wars on DVD, I wasn't that excited. I thought "maybe I've just used up Star Wars; I know it too well and it's no longer interesting." Talking to y'all on this website, I realized that wasn't it. The changes to the OT are part of it, but it's really the PT changing the entire context and universe of Star Wars.

I'm not so pumped about this set. I'm so pumped about divorcing myself from the PT and changes and looking at the OT in a new light (or old light) and rekindling that magic. This set can suck my yak. (no, that's not a euphemism, it's just a creative, non-offensive insult).

As I said in another thread, if GL would put out the old and the new universes of Star Wars, I would love to have them side by side for reference, and just dedicate myself to the old stuff. But since he's trying to bury the old concept, I'm getting buried with it.

How romantic. Like Aida.

What? C+ on ROTJ? Blasfemy!

Why not C++? Or Java the Hutt. Or... *insert another nerdy programing language joke here*

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. Wild speculation here but, when all six movies are released as a box set...that might be the best chance George will throw in the originals (most likely as an option to turn on or off the revisions), realistically it's probably won't happen, but if people keep bitching enough, you never know, that way everyone will be happy.... I do think Lucas is going to throw more stuff into the ultimate box set (OT cut/deleted scenes anyone.)

I am also glad Bill Hunt feels the same way about Return of the Jedi as I do.

Thanks, DB. I may have to rent the 4th disc to see the documentary now.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Will the separate discs be available to rent?

Maybe we cold rent it, and replace the disc with a computer-colorized Three Stooges film. Take that GL!

I was kind of disappointed in the Digital Bits review. Obviously they are entitled to their own opinion, but I thought they'd be a little more skeptical. The Time magazine article was also disappointing, as all it did was make Lucas look like this misunderstood genius. And the only dissenting quote was from Harry Knowles.

It's like I said before, until yesterday, we were in the calm before the storm. Now, here comes the storm, full of genuine exuberence, painful ignorence, and lots and lots of ass kissing and name calling. The circle is now complete. The wedge in the fandom, deeper. Wear your Star Wars shirts if you've got them, and when some dork gives you shit for not buying these, you tell him the truth with pride. For we are the rebellion against the revisionest empire. The Alliance for the Restoration of the Original Star Wars Trilogy. Hang in there guys, dark times are ahead.

FIRST let me say that I can't find anything to really support this - well that I can provide links to but I know that it has been brought up here on the boards before....

EVERYONE seems to forget that in many an interview about the original Special Editions....

George Lucas may have said something like this -

- All prints were destroyed a long time ago and the last 70mm w/6 Track Stereo Dolby Sound Reels from the Lucasfilm Archive were used in the creation of the Special Editions as the SE's were a way to save the film stock from deterioration - Digital copies of the SE were taken as well as fully restored 70mm prints.

OKAY I found this though

LUCAS STOPS VIEWING OF ORIGINAL VERSION- Associated Press, November 13, 2003 -

It would appear the Lucasfilm no longer wishes to support the original cut of the film, and has gone so far as to pull it from shelves in larger video chains such as Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. When AFI contacted Lucasfilm and described to situation, and their wish to show the original version in its historical setting they were told that the only prints still in existence were color match proofs in the Lucasfilm archives. All others had been destroyed by 20th Century Fox, as per Lucasfilm's request.

- I edited it to get to the point

SO in the long run..........

The original versions NO longer exsist in any other format besides the LD's, VHS's and these DVDr's

THERE may be a few dozen or more 35 prints floating around but try to find someone with high-end telecine equipment that would do it....

The originals films are not lost.

George Lucas gave a 70mm print of the three films at the French Cinematheque years ago.

Did he actually give it or LOAN it

I really was not aware of this..........

I was under the impression that Digital Lowry were given the job of restoring the disentigrating original prints BEFORE they started making changes for the 97 Special Editions, and that Lowry himself stated that GL has a few digital masters of the original version.

In the article from HTF I posted above it says this:

"Mr. Lowry explained that the restoration of all three of the original Star Wars films began with the negatives from the 1997 Special Editions. The original negatives were in extremely poor condition."

Heres another article about the restoration

I read a different review that had bad things to say about the ANH sound. According to them (IGN I think) some part of the dialogue is muffled and it isn't on the LD and VHS copies.

I belive the original negatives are preserved, he couldn't work on such scenes as the new Jabba scene or the new Emperor scene using the 1997 version.
