That is AWESOME. What a fantastic idea! What kind of "lens" did you use to give it that artificial bend at the top of the image?

"Not too long ago" was only yesterday In the end I just built a slightly higher-res (810x486) version from the last frame and a stretched first frame from that sequence.

There was no "lens" used - just a bit of guesswork and approximation. Each bit of the background is zoomed a different amount based on the sine of it's distance from center (multiplied by a different factor for left and right), plus a vertical shift to create the downward motion. The vane is zoomed with a linear function, which is equal to the background at the left and rises to the right, plus the same vertical shift. I was amazed it came out so well, and I think it vastly improves the shot of what was otherwise a very static painting.

The guys at LFL would probably look at that and think "wish we could have done that!"

They might wish they'd thought of it - they could definitely do it

I have been meaning to ask this but I always forget to .
Are these edits color corrected?

Nope - aside from the fact that I'd probably go bonkers doing that, it would be a somewhat arbitrary task which wouldn't suit my scientific mind That, and I've never had a massive problem with the colour on the DVDs.

There are some points where I've corrected colours, but only when there was a clear mismatch - one shot of the attack clock in ANH was blue instead of green, and the viewscreen views of Admiral Ozell looked horrible in ESB, so I adjusted the colours at the same time as softening the edges:

Wow can I just say that the shot of the Vane just looks amazing, once again you have taken an established shot and given it a new lease of life.

Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us.

What is supposed to be different in the wheather vane shot?

What is supposed to be different in the weather vane shot?

I almost posted an exagerrated version because it is fairly subtle. The top one, the original, is a 2D painting with a zoom. The bottom one is in pseudo-3D, giving the impression that the viewpoint is moving forward and down. It's most obvious at the top of the vane, where there's the most parallax motion.

Are you going to do anything to harmonize the two AT-AT crews? One has stripes on the back of their helmets and the other one doesn't.

I've got more info here.

Does that mean one crew is commissioned officers while the other is non-coms?

I've wondered about that. I've always liked the orange stripe. The interesting thing here is that the final cut of the film only shows cockpit scenes with General Veers, yet there are clearly two different crews .

That last paragraph from that article is telling. Seems like maybe it really was an 'off and on again' thing, like he said, and thus elements were forgotten/mixed up/dropped. To me, it's just another thing I never noticed, or hadn't heard of before! That's partly why I love seeing Darth Editous' list of fixes. I read it and think "oh yeah!" and certain things.

Wow, this looks good, even just from the little tidbits you've given us. Will there be another ADM/DE Hybrid for ESB as well?
Author
Time
Probably won't be a need for one. There was nothing from the special edition that I thought was worthy in ESB. ESB was a completely perfect film on its own. If DE reverts every single one of the SE elements I won't mind at all.

You're so right. The only addition I thought was kind of neat (but unnecessary, of course) was the extended shot of Slave 1 following the Falcon. But then, stretching out the musical cue sounded stupid to me, so...meh!

Really looking forward to this release. I can't wait to throw my ESB DVD in the trash along with ANH and ROTJ (I know you haven't done Episode VI yet, but with the changes they made, that movie's just unwatchable).

Well, good luck.

Man, the vane shot is so sweet! I can't wait to see the rest!
OK, just a few of my thoughts for the project:

I think most of these fixes are obvious, but I also know some of them probably aren't fixable, or even worth fixing.
The red check marks are the ones I would like fixed most.
Yeah, the hoth base shot has probably bothered me the longest.
It's so obvious that it's two different images put together.

Luke's dive does have a bit of a line across it, and something weird happens with his foot, so I'll look into that... the shield generator explosion does look a little odd, but I'm not sure what to do about that... I can't see much of a problem with the rest. I think the compositing has something of a 1980s charm about it

Disagree. Maybe I just have never looked that hard, but I've always thought that the effects in ESB were the most realistic overall.
