I have Gordon say it once to young Bruce. He just doesn’t keep repeating it two more times.

I would personally still keep him repeating it. But it’s your edit and I still await it with bated breath!

Hello gang, I’m getting close to the end. Everything is now finished, except for fixing all the audio transients throughout and me giving it a test watch to catch any editing or grading mistakes. I’ve updated the description to now reflect all the changes which have been made.

I wonder how you’ll be able to add the blood spurts?

“The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”

Camsmurph blood spurts are accomplished through professionally filmed blood squib vfx. The only one where the victim is actually in the shot is the headshot to the DA.

Had to pause it due to energy blackouts. It’s been cold. Brrrr. But I should have some updates made this week hopefully with a final release shortly thereafter. As long as we get power back on reliably.

Update: I’ve made a few unreleased Workprints and corrected various major mistakes. Currently am encoding what should end up being the the official 4K release of TDK: Retribution (somewhere around 10GB). If that looks good to me without mistakes then I’ll also encode a 1080 version at a smaller file size and release both. Should be this week.

As per my little review in the Review-Thread, astonishing work you´ve done here.
The problem is, no i´m keen to see what you can do with the superb The Dark Knight and not so outstanding dark knight rises 😄
But i figured you´re not planing anything like this.

Little note: perhaps a lower value for the crf would awesome, somekind around 18. Don´t know if staxrip produces any difference in quality between 22 and 18, could you shed some light on this matter?

CMMAP thanks for watching and especially writing a review! I am really happy with how this edit turned out. I could definitely do an encode at crf 18, (there would probably be a difference to discerning eyes) but that would produce a filesize likely around 30GB (or possibly larger with the amount of grain). Now if that’s something you want, I can do that. I could provide a Super HQ crf18 version for temporary download. Let me know if you want a very large file like that.

As far as lowering Bruce’s voice tone, this really was a trade off between settling for Bale’s unsuitable, high pitched normal voice and a few parts where running sfx on the just center channel might not sound 100% natural-- such scenes audio have to be totally rebuilt from scratch. There were a few scenes that were so unnatural (robotic) sounding I had to do just that-- rebuild them from scratch.

Let me know any scenes with Bruce’s voice that still strike you as too artificial sounding, and I’ll take a second look at those to see if they can be improved easily. One notable scene is Bruce seeing Rachael outside the hotel; the L and R channels carry reverberation from the original voices and could be heard by the discerning ear as a very slight chorus effect. Some scenes I did rebuild the audio from scratch but not this one because I felt the voice was just normal enough not to warrant the major effort to redo all music and foley SFX. I would appreciate it a lot if you could identify which scenes or Bruce’s lines stood out the most for you, regarding Bruce’s lowered voice.

thanks

Well, i would appreciate something like this, but only under the circumstances it doesn´t mean to many extra work and energy costs for you, since encoding can take a while. If it makes a bigger difference in encoding time, crf 20 would be probably enough quality i can live with for sure. I know that i´m kind of odd in this regard 😄

Just to make it clear and we don´t misunderstand each other: my refer to bruces voice is only meant for the scenes where he is batman. As Bruce himself, the lowering of the voice is great:

  • the first time i´d needed to get used to it --> 50:41 (in gordons office) but this is ok because he´s just starting and therefore doesn´t have the right voice modulation equipment.
  • 1:08.33 to 1:09.06 --> his voice seems way different than in the rest of the film, more hollow and “siri”-like. Is it possible to get it like in 1:20.44-1:20.54?
  • when he catches flask --> just great voice alteration. I assume it was easier to edit, because he already yells on a relativly low pitch
  • 1:11:59 (when the guys head got smashed into the mirror) --> looks like a or 2 or 3 frame drops. Checked with the original and there isn´t any stutter
  • 1:22.46 --> is a good voice alteration, very similiar to 1:20.44
  • 1:29.05 - 1:29.27 --> seems to be off again like 1:08.33 but less distorted

i hope this is helpful and there is a possibility, if you deem it to, to alter this.

kind regards

CMMAP thanks for clarifying. I’ll go through your comments in detail and respond in more detail later. As far as Batman’s voice goes it’s not possible to get them all to sound just the same because Bale uses vastly different voices in each scene. The good thing is in the sequels he uses similar voices whenever he’s Batman. I had to tweak the effects to get them to sound as similar as possible.

Good point here. The voice in this scene is just not great. In fact I went back to the original scene to listen and it seems like a joke.

The original scene suffers from two problems. First Bale used an especially bad voice, and second the EQ was not great. So I have played around with adding some more low end to this and also to modulate his voice down just a slight bit more. I changed around the effects used as well and while I will never be able to make it sound like the better voices he used, I can make it much much less bad. Maybe even slightly good.

Thanks for the help. And I’ll respond to the rest of your post as well.

I can encode at crf 18. It won’t take any longer to encode than crf 20. I have a fast PC so a full 4K encode using HEVC (H265) usually takes about 10-14 hours depending on the content. I just set it at night and the next morning its done. Trying the same thing on my macbook would take about 60 or more hours to encode. lol

When the guy gets smashed into the mirror, yes I did cut his head turning which was necessary to remove the peeing the way the scene and audio was done. So I’m ok with this. At this point I won’t be making any more changes to the video portion unless I find a serious glitch like optical flow errors.

The scene at about 1hr29m (Batman and Rachael in the Batcave). Yes I definitely see your point again with the Bat vocals. I realize also that this and the scene at Gordon’s trashcan both had some noise reduction I applied. I am removing it which will also help the issue quite a bit.

Thanks for your clarification, ho hard it is to get them all on a similiar level due to differrent usage of the actors voice.

Ah, that makes sense in the mirror smash scene. I can live with that as well, you could argue it´s a stylistic choice of the director if the other one doesn´t compare it to the original^^

Just for your notice, you don´t have to change anything regarding his voice if you´re fine with this or your hands are tied. It´s your edit 😃

Definitley appreciate that you encode it for me, if you didn´t started yet crf 20 is fine, no need for crf 18.

Many thanks to CMMAP for the critical eye and comments. I encourage anyone who watches the edit to do the same.

Below is what I plan so far for updating to v1.3. If anyone else has additional comments on how to improve in the next day or so, I will gladly take them into account.

  1. Tweak and improve every scene of Batman’s voice to result in a more consistent level of gravitas.
  2. Correct the motion tracking error for the VFX in the added scene of a woman hiding in her car (during the gassing of Gotham).

CMMP, I have a 4K encode almost finished going at crf20. Also I realized that Staxrip (the program I’m using to encode) does not automatically apply a de-banding filter to smooth out unnatural gradients (different than deblocking)-- Handbrake, a different program but without true 10 bit end to end, seems to always have de-banding on by default. So in addition to the better crf of 20 now there is proper de-banding, and the picture is noticeably better (perhaps even close to perceptually lossless in most scenes now). Final filesize is estimated at just over 12GB and should be ready later today.

Thanks for letting me know. Handbrake is no stranger to me, but didn´t know that either. But haven´t used it since i realized that it only has the 8-bit pipeline.
Didn´t expect it to have just 12 GB but nice 😃

That’s why I stopped using Handbrake, because it reverts to 8bit during processing. The final filesize can vary wildly with crf since its all about content. So for example, on one 2 hour film 4K crf 20 could result in 20GB and in another film-- half that.

If you use Staxrip and want proper de-banding, you have to use the VS filters under the restoration category:
Restoration > RCR > Colorbanding > f3kdb

THANKS, was desperatly searching through the options 😄 Right now i´m experementing with the software “hybrid”, full command line ffmpeg is a thing i´m still not very used to and have a lot to learn.
