The DVD's........Man!!!

Well I got my DVDs yesterday.

Good??

Bad??

ANH - Well, looks good, but theres a lot of bullshit going round here about fixed up lightsabres.
Bollox!!

Luke's is whute and looks the same as it always does.....

Ben and Vaders are more colourful, but that's about it. Yeah Ben's stick is now blue, and Vader's is red....good!

Now, not sure if this was in the SE or not, but there's a new piece of dialog. When the stomies are looking in the falcon, just before they leave, there's a "It's empty" line. Crap!!!

And the sound in ANH is inconsistant. The dialog spoken between Leia and Tarkin sounds so shit, hard to explain, but shit!!

I'll be back.....Work time!!

I remember that line on the 1997 version, yes.

There has been reported some problems with the audio. Multi-million costing re-call, anyone?

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. Nope. No recall. LFL released a statement to thedigitalbits.com claiming that it was intentional. Covers their asses.

It's not all the srround stuff that sounds shit.

It's just scenes where there's a lot of dialog.
eg...Between Tarkin and Leia...I think you can really tell what's been dubbed and what was spoken on set. All original stuff, but it just stands out a mile now. Just seems to be a lot of hissing in the background.

I'll have to watch it again...t'was very stoned...day off work an all!!

Empire and Jedi are fine......Just ANH seems to suffer the most.

But the new Fett voice...now, man, that's a shame.
Big mistake!!

Oh and when the Stormtrooper bangs his head there's a "boink" sound now too!!

Oh dear oh dear!!

I think hes just referring to the sound that it's made since the SE. A shitload of people have said there are other new audio editions...that were unbeknownst to them there all along. Like when the Stormtrooper talks before saying "Alright well check it out." That was always there, it was just garbled. You're simply hearing things more clearly...albeit, a littled fuckery has occured with the music and Tarkin scene.

what next? little birdies flying around his head, and then the stormtrooper shakes his head from side to side and makes that cartoon 'argyargyargy' sound . of course the extra hitting his head on the scenery was always part of Lucas's original vision.

I belive the subtitles for alien languages are the "forced" kinda ones. Even if you turn them off, they'll be displayed by your DVD player. Somehow your DVD player did not display them...

I have seen A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back on DVD. They look and sound excellent. I totally recomend them. I will give a full review on them after I finish Return of the Jedi and the extras.

Hi everyone, I'm new. I was watching a friends copy of ANH last night and yeah it is a rushed job. I know for a fact Lucas wasn't going to release the pre-prequel trilogy (they can't be reffered to as original anymore) until after episode III so I'm guessing this rushed job was forced (sorry abour the pun) on him by fan demand or Fox distributions. I totally believe he'll release an archival edition with all six movies fix up for continuity in 2007 to coincide with the SW 30th anniversary. I think this is just a way to get more money from us fans to fund his ever growing empire. Oh well, I'm an intergalactic fish and I'll bit was smells good or bad.

In order to see the subtitles, you must activate them. If they don't show up, use your DVD Player remote to switch through the different subtitle selections until you find it. I've had this problem before with TPM and AOTC...because they put these out w/o the subtitles embedded now for some reason. Whatever.

Me neither. Seems to me a lot of people here are making up crap about these DVDs so they can slam them, for no other reason than they aren't the originals. The transfers on these DVDs are stunning. The DD EX tracks on the DVDs are also stunning. Go read any review on the net. And yes, the lightsabers have been improved, considerably. Yes, they missed the one on the Falcon. Yes, there are some small inconsistencies. But the lightsabers in these films have never been completely consistent or flawless.

On R2 discs subtitles are always player-generated, whereas they are often burnt in with R1 DVDs. So the alien languages are subtitled in a default subtitle stream that is automatically active.

However, when I watched the films yesterday this subtitle stream was glitchy... in a few scenes the subs didn't appear, and I had to go to the language menu and select "no subs", which reset the subs back to what it should be. Then they showed up. I don't know if it's a disc authoring problem or what; but yeah, I can understand if people don't see the alien language subs sometimes.

I got the set and only found one thing. in ESB I did not hear Yoda's first words? when he says "Feel's like What!"
I played it 3 times so far and I think its been cut??

other than that they seem ok. .... well maybe some of the music seems a bit out of "Tune".

There are some legitimate problems with ANH, but there are also some reported problems that chalk up to user error. Not to throw stones in my house of glass, I am guilty of some of these too, but I've spent some time troubleshooting rather than bitching and resolved some of the issues myself.

I watched ANH the first time through the day it came out and noticed what I thought was a number of audio and video errors. I went online and found other people complaining about the same issues. But then I went back and checked my setup and found my tuner had been F-ed with (I have a 16-month-old son, so go figure). I straightened out my tuner and speakers, and ran the THX setup both for sound and picture and re-watched. Most of the problems went away upon viewing after these steps. Among other key problematic areas, I watched the Tarkin dialogue scene that everybody harps on again (I even turned my tuner down to -60dB) and had no trouble making out the dialogue clearly.

The Subtitles issue that some complain about has more to do with how individual players handle subtitles by default. I always set up my subtitle options on the menu because my player always defaults to a subtitle stream if I don't. Really annoying when you don't want to see subtitles, or if the subtitle order was screwed up in the mastering process. A previous user posted to set the "none" option in the setup menu. I concur. Always run your setup before watching a DVD.

Also, be sure that you select the correct mix for your setup. Many people with a stereo or even a (gasp!) mono TV configuration may select the 5.1 track (it's the default stream, proving that the masses aren't considered in the usability of this disc), and send a generous portion of the mix to speakers that don't exist. If you don't have 5.1, or if it isn't configured correctly, there will be numerous problems. Case in point: In my configuration, I was running the 5.1 into a PCM stereo setting on my tuner, cutting out the center and rears. To top it off, my subwoofer had been plugged into the sub input, not output.

<soapbox>
Frankly, if I ran Hollywood, all DVDs would force a setup menu upon loading, and it would be handled in a much more userfriendly manner. My dad doesn't know what the f a Dolby EX is, but I bet he'd select it because it sounds cool, even though he has a 20-year old RCA television with mono sound.
</soapbox>

I'm guessing some of the audiophiles with correct setups are still noticing some legitimate problems, but I think a LOT of the problems are coming from trying to run the 5.1 mix into a stereo setup.

That said, Lukes saber in the Falcon is undoubtedly green, there are still matte boxes around a few TIE fighter shots in the dogfight, and when Luke says "What good is it if he gets himself killed" the dialogue seems to have jumped up a few dB as if a studio loop wasn't mixed in quite right. Lucasfilm does have some issues to fix and I hope they do a replacement run like they did on the ESB laserdisc a decade ago.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

I watched the new DVDs on my friends 12 foot screen with 6.1 THX Certified Surround and if you have everything set correctly it sounds and looks better then ever. Sound is crisp, colors are vibrant and clear.

I also watched them on my system, smaller screen 5.1 surround and once again if you dont have it set up right it does have some sound errors, but set up properly they are barely noticable.

I agree, GL should make the originals on DVD but for now does not look good. I saw the original in the theater when I was 7 in 1977 and it was great. I watch the new 2004 edition now at 34 years old and I still love them. I have the OOT on VHS, 2 different Laser Disc versions, DVDR & the 1997 SE DVDs, I love the Originals and I also love the New ones. The changes are only couple minutes per film, not much at all for the enjoyment of what you are watching. Life is short, enjoy it while you can. Watch Star Wars while you can.
