The furor over the women’s only WW screening is still going on? Was anyone even mildly inconvenienced by this? Alamo must have the movie on a half dozen screens, and most of those guys could get into.

It’s a ridiculous complaint on every level.

The Alamo is not shutting out men from every screening, just a few. A man who wants to see the movie at the Alamo still has every opportunity to do so.

i don’t understand why anyone could have a reasonable complaint against one or two women-only screenings…

I mean, really? present an argument that is something more than whining, i can’t think of any.

Especially considering how many organizations, universities etc banned women from membership over the decades…

Is it a Civil Rights Violation to ban men from a WONDER WOMAN screening?

Nope.

I guess I don’t even need to watch the video.

Reading books, or knowing anything at all, might help, of course.

The answer is neither facile nor obvious. It depends on the state.
Most states prohibit discrimination based on sex (/“gender”) for any “public accommodation,” which is typically defined so as to expressly include “movie houses,” or something equivalent.

Assuming this screening was at Austin’s Alamo, however, it would not be a “civil rights violation,” not because Finkly was flip and snarky, but only because Texas is one of just five states that does not outright prohibit discrimination by a private party based on gender. In 45 states, though, this practice would unquestionably be deemed a civil rights violation.

(The damages, however, would be so low that no lawyer other than a selfless crusader would take the case, which he would do on principle.)

EDIT:

Fine, here you have the same document from the nyc.gov website
http://www1.nyc.gov/site/cchr/law/in-public-spaces.page

It is against the City Human Rights Law for a public accommodation to withhold or refuse to provide full and equal enjoyment of those goods or services based on the following protected classes under the Law:
Gender
Gender Identity

Examples of Public Accommodations:
Theaters

Oh, it was the New York Alamo?
Then it was a clear-cut violation of civil rights. Case closed. No reasonable dispute, and summary judgment is granted in favor of the whiny fanboys who got shut out.

Here’s your damages: a coupon for 10% off your next purchase of any extra-large soda and jumbo popcorn during your next visit to Alamo New York. Not valid Thursday through Sunday.

You have to really be a dumbass and pathetic human being to be upset about an all-women’s screening of Wonder Woman. Grow up and grow a pair and be a ****ing man.

You know I’m passingly familiar with Greek mythology so I know who the Amazons were, but after reading up more on it yesterday it appears the movie completely changed their origins and everything. I’m not sure the writer(s) should have discarded historical accuracy in such a blatant way.

The one lawyer he found in the country that cares is in Austin, so I have no idea why he brought up New York.

Anyway no one is prevented from seeing the movie so your point is also moot. If the Alamo said no men were allowed to any of the screenings it would be a different case.

not to belabor the point, but there are some close parallels if you consider ‘women only’ swimming times at public swimming pools:
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/01/opinion/everybody-into-the-pool.html

I believe the legal question would be if having select women-only screenings would be ‘reasonable accommodation’, and i would think it probably is.

Nothing to see here except people who get mad at anything they can label political correctness.

Lol, you do know Wonder Woman is made up, right?

JEDIT: I can’t actually tell if you’re joking. I hope you are.

I’m not talking about Wonder Woman. She can have whatever story she wants. I’m talking about the Amazons. Apparently they were children of Ares, so in the movie the whole backstory is all ****ed up.

Don’t be dumb. Even though they are mythological, the mythology was a historical part of Greek culture.

I wonder if in the next comic book we’ll see a flashback of some superhero inventing the Trojan Horse. The one the Greeks used to defeat Troy. Only there are no Greeks, and it didn’t happen at Troy. It happened in Okinawa in 1945 because…you know, the Trojan Horse was a myth anyway, right?

Today I learned that the biggest problem middle-class white men have is a women-only screening of Wonder Woman.

Stop embarrassing yourself. A person of privilege and a person who experiences constant prejudice are not the same. A straight white man in America complaining about pro-female, pro-minority, pro-LGBT activism is no different than a billionaire complaining about why all the common folk have to clutter up their nice views.

If you don’t have a million dollar yacht, don’t talk to me!

This is exactly what you sound like.

I don’t expect Wonder Woman to be any more historically accurate than 300 was. 😉

Come on Wook, all movies are required to have 100% accurate backstories.

I never have seen 300.

It wouldn’t bother me at all if it were just a passing detail not relevant to the story.

But Ares is the bad guy in the movie. The Amazons were his daughters. I think it makes a big difference.
