The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was — Page 14

That’s…really stupid if you ask me. Sorry.

Even in the canon EU version of events between ANH and ESB, it’s clear that Vader understands exactly who Luke is once he learns his name, and adding the lines to the Emperor scene in ESB just muddle things and make the viewer have to do some mental gymnastics for the scene to work, where the original dialogue worked just fine for 34 years and there was literally zero reason to change any of the lines or add any new ones.

When they don’t even bother writing up some backstory in the new EU to make those new lines work, you know it’s clear to everyone involved that the new lines were a mistake.

In the marvel comics Vader and Luke meet for like a minute and Vader sees the lightsaber, knows it’s his, and then sends some bounty hunters to figure out who the kid is. So in the new canon Vader knows who Luke is.

That being said it works with both versions of Empire but more so with the OUT.

In the OUT Vader just knows and everything moves on as normal.

In the SE versions we would just have to assume that Vader found out, kept it from Palpatine, and then just played dumb when Palps told him about Luke.

You know what even more dumb (à la “Dumb and Vader”) ? In the SE, the Emperor uses the exact same line Vader uses with Luke: “Search your feelings. You know it to be true”. I love this line, but with the SE it looks as if Vader thought “hey, what about speaking like Lord Sidious ? He sounded badass, I should do the same! He won’t mind if I steal his line, I’m gonna kill him with my son anyway, so…”

Hey, Hal. I thought you had said that you weren’t going to add these edits to fanedit.org.

I wasn’t, but then I did. I figure there’ll be a few people who would like to check them out and wouldn’t be aware of them otherwise.

I think I also may be one of the few who doesn’t mind the blinking ewoks either. Adds more life in their apperance to me, and doesn’t come off as distracting or bad in CGI.

I don’t particularly hate that change, but for a perfect version I would prefer it to be what feels right to my memory. Just a personal preference.

Hal, could I also have the link to your edits of ANH and ESB please?

Thanks in advance

Is KK650’s Semi-Specialized version also used for any lightsaber scenes? He color corrected any frames where the blues turn purple or the reds turn pink/magenta.

No, just the LUTs provided by DrDre.

Hey Hal, I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your custom special edition of ANH and it was almost perfect to me. I say almost because their was one thing I was never fond of. The Stormtrooper’s responses during the “These aren’t the droid’s you’re looking for.” It was the delayed responses of the Stormtrooper’s from the original stereo mixes. I’m curious why you went with that when the original mono and the 97 mixes onward corrected this. It just always sounded off to me like it’s not time in response like a normal conversation. I was hoping maybe you had it the other way in your secondary mix and was disappointed to not find it there either. I respect this is your edit none the less, like I said only curious why you went with that choice?

Now that’s not something I’ve ever noticed before until I just took a listen to compare.
So, the real answer is because I used OOT audio for the scene due to removing audio-affecting things before, during, and right after it, and because I wasn’t aware of the difference. I suppose it could be understood as a delayed reaction due to the mind trick. Ben responds quickly as soon as the trooper finished parroting his last line.

I am glad you enjoyed the film overall this way, though. I’m looking forward to watching the hopefully-complete-by-then Hal9000 presentation of the 9-part saga next year.

Whoa, that’s not something I was aware of at all. I’ll have to take a look at that next time I get a chance to …

Me too,for you it’ll be a long project of films you’ve worked hard on. I’m sure it’ll be bittersweet but yet you’d feel like you accomplished something grand. Maybe a future v2 alternate audio option. I’m with you on can’t wait to view all 9 episodes of your edits. Ever since reading of your edits in a online on a prequel edits fourm, with my memory serving of seeing your name Pop up which made me curious to see your edits. Thank you for the enjoyment.

Thanks for that.

I don’t think that scene could easily use SE audio due to the floaty droid, and the right edits right before and after the talking.
I’m not sure I prefer the SE spacing anyway; the one currently in there makes it sound like it takes a moment for the mind trick to filter through his thick skull and that Ben is waiting with his next direction the second he finished repeating it.

That audio discrepency something I only noticed after throwing on both the Blu Ray and Harmy for kicks. I agree with Hal, the delayed audio makes the Stormtrooper’s speech sound very labored and as if he’s no longer in full control of his mind. It demonstrates the power of the Jedi in a show-not-tell kind of way.

Maybe, but I like the pauses in dialogue added to the Special Edition, as it helps the view read what is going on just like Luke is in the scene. The way it plays out in the original feels too rushed.
