I am wondering why you said that this is a project that will most likely never be made by you. You are working on this project, and you already completed work on The Empire Strikes Back.

The reason is simple: We can’t edit thread titles. 😃

I don’t understand what you mean by that.

Mods can edit thread titles.

I know that, I was just asking Hal why he said in the description that this project may never happen, despite working on it, mentioning on making them in his editor’s commentary to The Force Awakens, and having completed his custom special edition of The Empire Strikes Back.

Just a quick reminder that all you guys and gals can edit your own thread titles if you wish.

Go to the first post, scroll down to the end of the post, and click on the light blue ‘Edit’ button - where you can enter text in the ‘Topic title’ section.

Or ask a mod to do it 😃

I guess I never went and edited the OP. Whenever everything’s done, whenever that is, it’ll be proven wrong.

Okay. I was just a bit confused. I can’t wait to see them. I’m also making my own custom special editions myself. Mainly based on my own personal favorite changes seen in the Special Editions and restoring the original parts as well.

I don’t seem to have this option when editing the OP. Could you perhaps retitle this thread to “The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was”? 😉

Longtime lurker here, just hovering a suggestion over from the ANH:RHD thread,
is it possible to recomposite the speeder scene? (the scene which comes right after the Obi-Wan mind trick in the OUT) Like, removing the ronto blocking in the way while still preserving some elements. (such as the SE shadow at the bottom of the speeder, shuttle flying behind the vaporators)

this post has been edited.

Is it possible? Maybe, but it’s beyond my personal capabilities. As things are I am fine with what’s there. We see three rontos in a wide shot, then one more as the speeder parks in front of the cantina.

A bit of progress. Considering the new thread title I’d better get this done. 😉

Very good to see, Ridley. No need to rush, but we’ll move forward with delivering the final product whenever you’re able to complete it.

Someone PM’d me about whether ANH was available because he was going to introduce someone to Star Wars this weekend. So for anyone interested, I just uploaded a workprint version (without the hyperspace effect) to Google Drive to sit alongside the ROTJ workprint and completed ESB.

I’ve worked on my own fanedit of ROTJ (“The Ziggy Edit,” which is quite a bit more ambitious than your planned changes), and so I just wanted to give you some feedback based on what I encountered with my project.

  • Adywan is including footage from 4K83 in his edit of “ROTJ: Revisited” and I would really recommend you do the same. Specifically, the Blu-Ray has an out of focus section from the first part of Endor that is pretty bad. 4K83 fixes this.

  • I’m a big fan of the “Jerjerrod’s Conflict” deleted scene, and I integrated it into my edit using audio recorded by Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor. While you obviously don’t have to use this in your project, it does add a more “human” element to the Empire that I think was missing in the OT.

  • I’ve never been a fan of Obi-Wan’s description of “a certain point of view.” Again, it’s your edit, but in mine, I integrated the found Laserdisc footage of Yoda saying to Luke, “Obi-Wan would have told you log ago, had I let him [about your father]” which makes this much better in my opinion.

Many other of your changes are in line with what I would recommend as well. Looking forward to seeing your work!

Thanks, Ziggy. I’m hoping Adywan publishes a regraded ROTJ the way he did for ANH. If not, I know I’ll need to use footage from 4K83 for that section and get help making it blend in.

As to the other two things, I don’t want to reintegrate deleted scenes for this hybridized SE version.

I absolutely love this project and can’t wait for the finished results! It is very superb and the version of Star Wars I always wanted. Thank you Hal and helpers!

Here’s a look at the hyperspace FX!

It’s basically finished, but I might want to adjust a couple of tiny things. What do you think? Anything that looks off? Are the colors good?

Ridley, that looks gorgeous! I can’t imagine anyone at Lucasfilm doing any better, 1997 or today. The characters’ faces and various surfaces each reflect the flicker at appropriate levels. The tunnel and its flicker are a good midway point between the newer movies and fitting in well with the 1977 aesthetic (or even a hypothetical GOOD 1997 SE aesthetic). The color looks good to me, just a little green to reach forward to the newer movies but not overwhelming.
If you feel like anything needs adjusting, I defer to your judgement, but I can’t fault it for anything. I’m very pleased with it.

Wow! I love it!

When I was doing my version, I was playing around with the Battlefront model of the Falcon to see what you could see through the windows, and I think you shouldn’t be able to see the tunnel through Leia’s side. But I’m not entirely sure.

Oh my god, that looks perfect!

Ridley, would you mind shooting me a PM of the lossless (or ProRes or whatever) output as well? Once you’re satisfied with it, of course.

Good to hear! I’ll make some adjustments and send the file when ready.

I’m glad you approve as well! I remember that you mentioned the view from Leia’s window before, so I took that into account. I actually looked at the Battlefront model as well (and used it for the exterior shot). I looked at the model from the inside at about the same angle as the shot of Leia, and the hull was visible but only covered part of the window (I guess it depends on the exact angle and focal length though), so that’s what I made it look like.

More as a curiosity than something I’d actually want to see/hear, I wonder what sort of things could be done to the OT’s dialogue to better mesh with the prequels.

A few things come to mind:

  • Changing Obi-Wan’s line to “[I] wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn’t allow it.”

  • “…[a] Jedi Master who instructed me.”

I wonder what other subtle tweaks one could implement. Don’t worry, I’m not thinking of doing anything like this for this project!

Being something of a prequel apologist, I’ve experimented with changing “Only a master of evil, Darth.” to “Only a master of evil, Vader.” (or even “Only a master of evil, Anakin.” - but I decided that didn’t work since it goes against Obi Wan’s certain point of view) and cutting “A young Jedi named…” from “A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights.” in order to remove entirely the implication that Obi Wan trained a man whose literal name was Darth Vader. I haven’t got the clips to hand, however.

At the very least cutting the first one is unnecessary.

I always figured cutting Obi-wan saying “I don’t remember ever owning a droid” would be helpful - even though he’s not contradicting anything it’s weird that that would be his response to Luke saying R2 was his property, whereas him simply saying “very interesting” would be rather fitting. By the same token, you could potentially change him saying “come here my little friend” to “come here my old friend.”
