Looks great to me!
Looks great to me!
Glad you like it! 😃 Here’s a video of the effect:
pass: fanedit
Excellent work ! It looks very good… but may be looking a little bit too “sharp and clean” ? (adding slight film grain could be an option, just to see the result ?)
It looks great. The one thing that I think could be improve is the ship’s movement. It starts out and then it feels like it decreases speed and settles in place towards the end. I feel like the speed could be more consistent.
Jedit: It might just be my eyes playing tricks on me.

Thank you. I did add some blur and grain to make it look a bit more organic, maybe I can adjust it.

The original shot has a very similar movement, but I could tweak it a bit. The speed is actually consistent, but it feels faster when the ship is closer to the camera. Perhaps I could increase the speed a little bit toward the end.
Here’s a comparison of the interior shot that follows the exterior shot, before and after my added hyperspace lighting.

I think that looks perfectly fine, though I wonder if less would be more. Based on TFA, the hallway shouldn’t really look blue. I think it might do better to turn down the effect to split the difference between the parts of the frame that should and shouldn’t be bluish.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I could turn down the blueness a bit. I actually did mask the hallway so it isn’t blue all the way in, there’s warmer light coming from further inside the ship.
Here’s a new comparison of a slightly tweaked shot with a better view of the hallway:

That’s wonderful. No complaints at all. Thanks for posting that second cap, because it shows how you’d already thought of that.
This shot was always lit with the idea that the ship was in hyperspace, and looks somewhat dark. The later scene being worked on wasn’t, and appears bright. It’s almost like the Falcon’s interior lights were on during that scene. Comparing two scenes from TFA of the cockpit during hyperspace travel (“I bypassed the compressor” vs. “We’re making our landing approach at lightspeed”), they each are lit differently.
The later scene may not need to be darkened much, just made bluish, since it appears to have light sources within the cockpit itself.
I say this, but it may prove different once you see it in front of you to work on.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
Yeah, now that this first scene has been “approved” I can try to achieve a similar look for the other scene. We’ll see what needs to be done.
Now that I was able to take a better look at the two hyperspace cockpit scenes in TFA (not on my phone), I don’t think there’s much of a substantial difference in lighting.
That being said, I trust you implicitly. ANH and TFA depict many of the same things in different ways, with TFA being ‘faster and more intense,’ so the cockpit shots you are working on do not need to have quite as intense of a blue and white flicker all over everything as TFA does.
Thanks again for doing this; it’s great to have this to look forward to during a rough week in my personal life.

Yeah, the sequels have very different visuals in many aspects. So I’m going for a look that fits with the older aesthetic rather than trying to make it look like it was made today.
I’m absolutely loving this. Great work my good Sir Ridley!!!
All my life as I looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never in my mind did I know where I was, what I was doing.

Not just in general, but specifically those two scenes in TFA are faster and more intense by nature (ship about to overload because of compressor, preparing to enter the Starkiller atmosphere), whereas the ANH scene is just people talking. So there should definitely be an effort to match the feel of TFA’s lighting while fitting with the tone of the ANH scene.
Looking great Ridley.
Yeah man, that’s some fantastic work! Can’t wait to see it in motion.
All of the transition wipes were redone nicely in the Special Edition. As a suggestion, it might be nice to redo the wipe from the GNK droid’s feet burning to the Lapti Nek dance number in Return of the Jedi, if you are using an HD restoration such as the Despecialized Edition. I’m planning on making a hybridized custom version of the original trilogy too, and that is something I plan on trying to utilize.
The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.
The wipes weren’t redone for ROTJ, and that wipe in particular takes us into material from the OOT that I’ll need to use.

Okay. I wasn’t entirely sure.

At least there is one redone : the new Tatooine desert shot with the Dewback (I hope you’ll keep that by the way, I love this shot 😃)
^ Yeah, Mala, that’ll be there.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
Here’s a look at the coloring of the second scene.
It takes a lot of masking to keep the hallway color untouched.
Wow! You’re putting a great deal of detailed work into this. THAT part isn’t surprising, of course. I think it’s gonna look better than if Lucasfilm were tasked with making the change when doing the SE.

It almost seems overkill initially, but the difference in color between the cockpit and hallway really does add depth to the shot. Just a little detail that feeds into the reality of this universe.
Man, that’s excellent work!
Glad you like it! I agree that the color difference of the hallway adds depth. It’s a subtle effect and it takes a bit of extra work, but it helps to make the blue light look like it’s part of the scene rather than just a filter.
What I still have to do is add the hyperspace tunnel in the windows, and mask the hallway in a later shot.
