The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released) — Page 26

Sweet! Not as goofy as the original, big improvement.

“Always in motion is the future” 🌌

So much better than the original. Fits much more with the character builded after the prequels.

Awesome stuff, I always wondered why Lucas did it for TESB but not ROTJ. It was jarring back in 1983 and it’s jarring on the current releases IMO.

“Star Wars has, and will always be a restaurant.”

That plus the alternate takes for some of those Boba lines in ESB is gonna make things a lot better for his character.

I’m surprised a lot of people now want Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett now. I know he’s doing a good job in the Disney+ shows and all that, but I still felt like the majority would still want Jason Wingreen.

I guess it’s like how a lot of fans who grew up watching the Prequels as kids want Hayden at the end of Return of the Jedi instead of Sebastian Shaw.

I suppose we wouldn’t have minded having Temuera Morrison replace Jason Wingreen had his line delivery was better. The voice direction sounded pretty lazy to me. Probably why George also wanted Ian McDiarmid to shoot the scene for The Empire Strikes Back during principal photography of Revenge of the Sith, even though the makeup is different compared to Return of the Jedi. Thanks, Adywan!

I still prefer Wingreen for ESB, though I don’t feel as strongly about it as I used to, since I’ve enjoyed Morrison’s performance in the new shows. But it’s not Wingreen in ROTJ, it’s some random dude doing a goofy scream. I’m happy to see that replaced, whether it’s by Morrison or somebody else.

Does anybody know who’s voice that is, because it certainly isn’t Jeremy Bulloch. Most likely just a random crew member of ILM or Lucasfilm.

Hello. I have your custom special editions of empire and jedi but don’t have a new hope. Could you send me a link? Thank you.

Here’s a folder of Boba Fett’s four lines in ESB with work done to partially replace these with things from Battlefront II. This is finished work, with foley and everything mixed in ready to go. I put them in here as stereo, but please listen with your best headphone and try to be super discerning. I just need to know whether these work, considering whether they do as a whole.

“As you wish” could be included safely even if the others aren’t. I don’t dig having to modify the lines, though these are close paraphrases.
“He’s not worth anything to me dead” is sentence mixed.
“He’s worth a fortune to me” is lightly sentence mixed, but my bigger concern is that it may not match up with the first half of the line (“What if he doesn’t survive?”). I tried to pitch adjust, but it wasn’t working with either because it either introduces artifacts or the music is affect in a jarring way.
I included “Put Captain Solo in the cargo hold” for reference, since it can’t be modified.

So again, we gotta be honest with ourselves. Is the sum of this presentable to millions worldwide in 1997 cinema DTS?

I think the third line could still use a bit more work, but other than that, pretty good. I was quite impressed with the second line.

The sentence mixing is really well done. The only one that stands out to me is “He’s worth a fortune to me” specifically because of the contrast with the first half of the line. If there’s a way to smooth it out, I think it’s very close to working.

“Star Wars Story” on YouTube uses some pitch correction (or slow down?), and I don’t hear any distortion, but it’s also a YouTube video in stereo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b08O9S-tKnE

Like others have said, everything sounds perfect except for “He’s worth a fortune to me”. Maybe leave that one as it as it is originally? I’m not sure.

There’s the “Won’t be long now, Solo” line in Battlefront II. It might make a good replacement for “Put Captain Solo in the cargo hold.”

I really like what you’ve done here! Aside from the third line, it’s all seamless. Would adding more distortion/slowing down the first part help?

I hate to say it but I don’t actually hear a difference compared to the first version. I think the first half of the line would have to be slowed down more to make it work. I don’t think you should give up though.

  • “As you wish” - Sounds perfect.
  • “He’s not worth anything to me dead” - Sounds good to me. If I’m being really nitpicky, I feel like the emphasis would normally be on “dead” rather than “anything” - like, “dead” would have to be pitched up slightly - but I don’t think I would’ve noticed if I wasn’t deliberately looking for seams.
  • “He’s worth a fortune to me.” - I think the problem here is vocal quality, unfortunately, rather than something digital. “What if he doesn’t survive” is quick and full-sounding and matter-of-fact; but “He’s worth a fortune to me” sounds softer and slower, kind of raspy and whispery and sinister. Maybe speeding up the line a little will help it to match better? But god knows I’ve had to scrap a bunch of potential line replacements myself because the vocal quality didn’t match.

I enlisted the help of danieldubb, and he’s been able to apply the right settings to make these sources cohere pretty well. I couldn’t get it 100% done right now, but I think it’ll be a big step up.
