Damn Eddie. You have been BUSY! I can’t believe how much you’ve gone through. You really are close to the end now!
I just looked and saw your first post was less than two years ago. This is one hell of an accomplishment in that time!
Haha, thank you very much! It is hard sometimes, it’s very full-on. But I want to get this out to you guys. I do look forward to enjoying my other hobbies, though! Once I’ve got season five complete, I’ll be polishing up 2&3 (and probably do a full end-to-end watchthrough/polish pass) and THEN I’ll consider the edit truly complete. But then I’ll still do the additional cuts, albeit at a more relaxed pace.
Right now I keep coming back to the Ahsoka vs Hondo arc, with the Younglings, because the second half of my edit is extremely light on Grievous, and it does show Ahsoka’s competence just before she leaves the order. So that might be the first ‘extra’ I do.
Damn Eddie. You have been BUSY! I can’t believe how much you’ve gone through. You really are close to the end now!
I can’t wait to watch this in a Star Wars re-watch, its truly impressive how much you’ve gotten done in such a short amount of time!
Thanks guys! Doing a whole season in the last two months feels pretty great.
That said, I acknowledge that all of the work on this has been paced very weirdly! So much more time is spent planning than executing, and a lot of editing time is taken up by the intros and outros for each episode. And even with the proper editing of the body content of each episode, a workprint can take no time at all, but then it’s the little explorations and transitions that can take forever. Far more time has been spent on the first two thirds of this series than the last three, though that was always going to be the case with this show. And I know I don’t go back and polish until quite a long time after release, but that’s just how I achieve momentum so I appreciate your patience with that one!
Don’t worry though - I won’t consider this truly complete until every nugget of feedback is processed, and I won’t slow down till then. I really hope at least a few people will give feedback on a full end-to-end viewing.
It’s really exciting to me that I’ll likely have this complete long before the release of the Ahsoka show.
I’m definitely planning on giving feedback on a full watchthrough.
“You will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view” — Obi-Wan Kenobi
I haven’t watched the entirety of the Yoda episode but the new “vision” transitions are great!
Honestly, how you’ve retitled the Mortis Arc and the Yoda Arc as “The Living Force” and “The Cosmic Force” is brilliant. Really solidifies these episodes as companion pieces that share similar themes and editing concepts. One of my favorite things you’ve done with your project!
Thanks! That wasn’t planned in advance but it totally feels right, especially for our season of conspiracy/mystery. I always get a nice kick each time I find a new title that I think highlights the theme better, I like to think it helps the viewer just squeeze that much more value out of the episode by slightly directing their attention.
I’ve broadly been very pleased with all the not-editing elements of this project. No goal runtime, opening text, different music for the intro and outro, concept art on the credits- I think they’ve all been additive in a small way. Increasing the show’s perceived “confidence” in itself was an unwritten goal, because I remember in my original watch-through not being able to trust whether or not a given episode was going to be good or terrible, which made it hard to properly engage and commit.
I watched the first 3 episodes and I generally like it.
The only thing I would personally change is switching episode 2 and 3. Simply because it would be nice to close off episode 1 with Obi-Wan leaving Christophsis in his star-fighter and open episode 2 with him arriving on madalore navigating the very same ship.
“Vader! Hologram, now!”
It’s a valid and sensible thought. I spent a while working on the ordering for season one, but I think in this case my current order wins out, because:
Thank you for your feedback though, please do keep it coming!
(And while I’m posting, I’ll let y’all know I hope to start work on season five this week.)
i wasn’t going to watch this.
i already had smudger9’s old edits, 5 movie length episodes of Clone Wars made from spliced together episodes. my only real issue was that it only covered up to, i think, season 4. so i thought about finding other movie length episodes that would cover the rest, or maybe take the time to learn to do it myself. then i found and watched g00b’s Rebels Recut. stay with me here.
i thought his edits were movie length too, and once i saw that they weren’t, i almost didn’t watch them. but i did, and i loved them. i mention this because he states that your edits were his inspiration. so i gave them a shot.
now, i’ve only watched up towards the end of season 2, and i know you’re not entirely done. but i just want you to know that i think this is the best Clone Wars edit there is, and your efforts are appreciated. i hope you keep working until you finish them, for all our sakes…
Thank you so much, feedback like that makes it all worth it. I hope you enjoy the rest! ❤️
I’ve just conducted a review of the next episode, our s05e01, covering the Martez Sisters arc. It’s not amazing, but it has some good content regarding the role of the Jedi, and Ahsoka’s development into and beyond the finale. The core of the episode is Ahsoka finding herself, rather than Rafa and Trace Martez, so I’ll try to preserve all the scenes which show Ahsoka doing what a Jedi should. I don’t dislike the Martez sisters as much as some do, but like all things, they should be used here mainly to support the core plotline.
It’s an awkwardly paced quadrilogy, but I think I can do a lot about that.
From the first episode, we can lose a lot. We definitely don’t need the droid action scene - it’s enough to have Ahsoka notice it’s a dangerous droid then have Rafa sell it anyway, to establish the characters. But I might be able to trim more, just focusing on the main introduction to the setting.
The second episode is pretty necessary, as it’s where everything kicks off. It’s not super interesting but it’s almost all important. I would have liked to trim the scene where Trace dumps the spice into space, since it’s such a facepalm, but it’s necessary and I don’t think there’s a way to play it differently.
The third episode is almost all unnecessary. The intros with the torture and prison conversations are good, but then it’s almost entirely action which ends up with them back where they started, so we can skip the lot of it. I can still preserve the Mandalorian scenes, reworking them into other content.
The fourth is mostly necessary. I might trim a little, but the key will just be getting the prison transitions correct so it feels seamless.
I do have an option here to cut more of episode four - Trace and Rafa’s plan to save Ahsoka, and Ahsoka bombing the refinery (and learning a little unnecessary but decent Maul hint), but I think that part is key for Ahsoka’s ‘becoming a wandering Jedi’ storyline.
Should be quite straightforward to edit, either way.
Episode is close to completion, but it’s had an error in rendering and removed all my audio transitions, so I’ll need to render it again. Should be ready tomorrow morning.
I just saw the preview for Tales of the Jedi. I expect that there may be some new footage soon for you to incorporate.
Oooh, exciting! Man, it looks fantastic. The early part of TCW:R could really do with some Ahsoka training action, if nothing else! And the Dooku stuff looks fantastic.
This arc is the first one from the true ‘final’ season of the Clone Wars, released by Disney after the earlier cancellation. As such, it has far lovelier animation than before. The core of the story is fairly decent, focused as it is on Ahsoka finding herself after leaving the Jedi Order, but it’s marred by some pacing issues and filler which sap energy away from a viewing.
Some people have strong opinions on the Martez sisters - please keep them to yourself rather than sharing them in this thread. From an editing perspective, their most facepalm moment does need to stay as it drives the plot, though I have been able to tighten some of their behaviour (and a suprising amount of inconsistency which I noticed when putting their scenes back to back.) They’re now a little more consistent, and a little more believably competent survivors, though still ultimately the same characters.
As it stands, this is basically the same episode, just a lot tighter.
Noteworthy changes:
Onwards to the next episode, the Bad Batch, which is the only remaining one that actually needs any significant work done to it.
I originally wanted to watch a few more episodes before I give feedback but since I didn’t have the time for that, I figured, I’d at least leave some thoughts on the first episode of your show.
First of all, editing wise and from a technical standpoint it’s really pretty much perfect. The story on the other hand - and I know that you already know that and that this is something that’s only a problem for the first two episodes - is really all over the place in that episode. I feel like keeping some more weaker material from Christophsis would have helped here, but it’s been a while since I saw the original episodes so I might be completely off here, but one example of the plot not working for me is the Ventress fight that just ends with her running away and then she just never appears again. Surely there was some closure to that in the original episodes?
But anyway, that’s not the part I actually wanted to talk about since I’m sure you gave the possibilites for making the plot in that episode work way more thought than I did.
What I mostly wanted to mention is the one thing that made the episode feel like a fan edit to me and that’s the introductory text. I’m not against that text in general. In fact, I really liked the kinda cold opening with the first line “Conflicts erupt in the early days of the Clone Wars.” That’s a really great line but by the second and third line it began to feel too much like an info dump which was still kinda fine but then it continued for another three lines while I just wanted to get into those conflicts the first line promised.
So my main suggestion here would be to shorten the introduction to three lines which I think in this case is easily done (that might not be the case for other episodes of course), so let me just comment on how I could see that being done (sorry for the lengthy stuff about something you probably don’t want to change this late into your edits).
Conflicts erupt in the early days of the Clone Wars.
Great line!
With ANAKIN SKYWALKER’s ascension to the rank of Jedi Knight, his former master OBI-WAN KENOBI has requested a new padawan.
I don’t think we need this information. Except for the fact that Anakin is now a Jedi Knight, we are told the same thing in the episode when it becomes relevant. And the Jedi Knight bit could probably be combined with some other information in a later line.
Aided by a small clone squadron, the duo now defend Christophsis, a planet whose crystal factories produce military energy shields.
Something about Anakin and Obi-Wan defending Christophsis is of course important but the rest seems unnecessary to me. I mean, it’s a nice bit of trivia that Christophsis produces energy shields but it’s not like Star Wars has been known for providing reasons as to why there is a battle on a certain planet.
Count Dooku’s fleet has forced the Republic’s ships to retreat to a nearby medical station, leading to fears of an imminent invasion.
IIRC you put that in in order to connect the episode to the next one, but still, this information doesn’t feel necessary to me.
But having detected the distant signal of Dooku’s assassin ASAJJ VENTRESS, a priority target, the Jedi rush to capture her
.
That line is of course completely necessary to set up the first scenes.
They are unaware that comms have just been jammed planetwide…
That is literally the first line of dialogue in the episode, so rather unnecessary.
With all that, I think it would be possible to combine lines 2, 3 and 4 into one that just sets up that Anakin and Obi-Wan are “desperatly trying to defend Christophsis while they wait for reinforcements from the Republic feet” or something like that. Maybe include the blockade or fear of invasion or whatever. Then lead into the episode with line 5 and just skip line 6.
As a secondary suggestion, something else I for some reason expected when the first line showed up on screen and that I still like as a concept is that after each line, you could show maybe 5 to 10 seconds of footage in the style of a silent movie to underline what was just written. So after the first line about conflict erupting, show a montage of that conflict (in this case scenes from Geonosis would probably make most sense since one would watch this after AoTC) and the same with the second line and then have the third (or whichever is the last) line lead directly into the episode and show the logo and episode title only after the first scene.
I think that could work really nicely, but again, I get that you probably don’t want to make this change that late into production.
Anyway, once I got the chance to see more episodes, I’ll (hopefully) be back with more feedback on the actual episodes themselves.
You raise some very good points there about both the story and the crawl. The crawl I can probably refine much more, so I’ll think more on that, and your input will be valuable there.
On Ventress I feel I’m more limited. In the original Christophsis episodes her appearance was pretty much as you see it here. She appears, she disappears, she’s no longer involved in the plot. At one point a traitor clone implies he’s been paid off by her, but that plotline doesn’t have any bearing on the wider Christophsis story either. So there you’re not seeing so much of a fan edit as me kind of permitting myself the original episode’s flaw.
I opted to keep her because it serves to introduce her to this show (having first appeared in the Tartakovsky miniseries) and because she’s relevant especially to the first half of the first season. If you were to watch them all in one season, or to watch these episodes merged as with Smudger’s first movie, it might land better.
I had hoped to use the opening crawl to imply that her purpose was to distract the Jedi from the fact that they’re landing an army. Maybe I should make that more explicit in my streamlining of the text. Interested in your thoughts here.
You may find the second episode similarly a little messy, as it’s the next weakest, but I hope you’ll get value out of the show from there! It gets massively better as it goes.
Huh, shows how long ago I last watched The Clone Wars. I thought Ventress had more relevance in those episodes. I can imagine there is not much else you can do then and I agree that introducing her in this episode makes a lot of sense. It might very well be that her appearance feels less disjointed once I watch more episodes.
And I am definetly looking forward to watching more. I already really liked The Clone Wars in its original form and so I’m confident that once I get to the episodes with a better base plot, everything will click into place once again.
If you don’t mind me asking but when will you release the Kenobi/Maul final showdown episode?
Very soon after the main finale, I won’t delay to complete it.
Just watched the first five episodes of this edit.
I got no new ideas, just wanted to let you know they work great as an introduction to tcw!
I remember when i first tried to watch tcw years ago i didnt make it through the first episodes, i quit watching. But this version has made me binge watch the show 😃
Does anyone have access to Respeecher so it can be used for the seasons where Tim curry is the voice of the emperor and replace his voice and Ian Abercrombie in those seasons with ian mcdiarmid’s voice?

You rang?
I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.
Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.
For all the assholes who keep giving me shit for my reviews, here’s your fuckin proof: https://youtube.com/shorts/7ytqBdVYoWw?si=-AIkldGZmOY-1LVP

You serious or are you joking because if your serious I’d really appreciate it if you could do it that was the weakest part of those seasons or was it season of the clone wars because it takes me out of that part of the clone wars especially during the sidious vs maul and savage.
Alternatively if you could have Palatine exclusively sound like Nigel Thornberry that’d be smashing.
