The BDs - Neither Meat Nor Fish

I had this thought about the BDs the other day.

If there are 2 Star Wars camps- this release should satisfy neither of them.

Camp 1 AKA "Us" - Either want just the originals, or tasteful, restrained updates to some of the effects (matte work, whatever).  This BD release is obviously not that.

Camp 2 AKA "Ugh..."- Want the be all/end all version.  With the best colours and sound that modern technology can supply and all of the latests "visions" that George Lucas has been having.  The BD isn't that either.

So why are people still buying this?

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

They are distracted by the Blu-ray seal of quality.  If it is good enough to be on blu-ray, it has to be great!!

George is God. Everything He delivers unto us is a divine gift, and MUST be accepted with fervent joy.

There's more than two camps.  In fact, the largest camp is probably "I buy everything Star Wars" or "I buy everything Star Wars for someone I know."

Its the cover art.

Water color enthusiasts are a bigger market than you realize.

Because Star Wars is the most requested title for Blu-Ray and everyone want it for their collection.

I think this is exactly right. I certainly don't look into a lot of Blurays before buying them. All I see is "Big Trouble in Little China? on BR? for $15? I'll take it!" There are a  lot of old movies that are on BluRay and I, like most people, just assume that they have been given the appropriate Bluray makeover.

I doubt a majority of the population has seen SW as many times as I have and so they certainly haven't seen it as much as most of you guys have. I think if you randomly asked casual fans, they would have no idea what "Han shot first" even meant.  If casual users don't notice the obvious changes, you can bet they don't notice less obvious things like color.

Then why would they need BD?  So they can continue to not notice things, but in HD?

Most mainstream buyers aren't video or audiophiles, they only hear "Blu ray, new? Awesome!"

I have Romancing the Stone on Blu-ray. I love the film, watched it when I was a kid on TV and had a tape of it recorded that I used to see sometimes. I've watched it once or twice since then. So, I've probably seen the film about ten times in my life, would consider myself a fan, and bought it when I saw the BD on sale. But if they added CG rocks to the background of a shot or two, or changed a minor line of dialogue, I doubt I would notice. And if the colour looked basically as I remember it, then I wouldn't think anything was amiss, any differences I would pin down to the BD/remastering making it truer to the original colours.

I mean, complain as we do, Hoth has been blue since the 1995 THX release that everyone bought, the blockade runner is still white-ish, and the Death Star has always been grey-bluish, so as far as most people are concerned the films look about the same as they always have.

So, for Star Wars fanatics, yeah they should be more attentive, and probably are at least vaguely aware of all these things. But the more casual fans, aka just "fans" where more regular films like Romancing the Stione are concerned, won't notice these things, and it's not because they are stupid, they just don't memorize every movie they watch. There are a lot of videos I've owned like Rocky where if I didn't read on the internet that there are visual differences from previous ones I would never have known.
