Leslye Headland, Emmy Award-nominated creator of the mind-bending series Russian Doll, brings a new Star Wars series to Disney+ with The Acolyte. The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.

Why do I have a feeling this will involve Darth Plagueis and “The Acolytes of the Beyond” leading into the history of who they are and how they end up worshipping Palpatine. I think Exegol and TROS references will be high in this one.

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

I think there was a report awhile back that they planned to do more with Exegol, in some shape or form, so I think you may be onto something there.

I just hope this doesn’t become yet another “promise it’s from the bad guys perspective” only to become a redemption story 3 episodes in. Let’s get a full-blown evil Sith - no redemptions!

Bad guys turning good has become so overdone at this point.

Absolutely! Having a villain stay evil until the end doesn’t mean they cannot get any character development, nor is a redeemed antagonist inherently more complex.

It would be great if this could make some sense of the mess that was the Exegol subplot in TROS, and even more awesome if it somehow leads up to Plagueis.

I’m not holding my breath. Remember how the first two seasons of Star Wars Rebels hinted strongly at Ezra falling to the dark side? Once season three premiered that subplot was dropped after one episode.

It’s a mystery-thriller. That makes me think there will be a reveal at some point of someone as a villain we didn’t expect to be. Hopefully with an intricate plot. I really enjoyed Russian Doll, so I think it’ll be great.

As much as I’d hate a Yoda origin story, I’d be okay with a Palpatine origin story. Obviously this is too early in the timeline for him to be around, but I’ve always liked the idea that he was older than he let on. An age some consider to be unnatural.

But who’m I kidding, it’s obviously be based around new characters with a healthy (or perhaps unhealthy) dose of “remember this?” thrown in.

No, I really don’t. He seemed to be continuing down the standard Light Side path, complete with a normal amount of temptation.

I’d prefer if this winds up focusing on the development of the rule of 2 and therefore possibly revolving around the rise of Darth Bane and the fall of the Brotherhood of Darkness due the outcome of the Jedi-Sith War.

I’d only recommend the High Republic for anyone interested in an entire new era of Star Wars. It doesn’t have that OT atmosphere of rebellion against an oppressive regime. It still feels like Star Wars, just during a time when the Jedi and the Republic were at their peak. There are adversaries though, and even tragedy.

I’d start with the first one, “Light of the Jedi.” It sets everything up and introduces a lot of new characters.

Thanks for noticing. Thought I was the only one that knew who Yendor was.

I had to google Kalee to learn the significance of your screen name. Maybe there should be a thread for people to discuss their name origins?

I am excited to see how this intersects with the High Republic material.

I’d love to see live action Buryaga

Yeah I really liked Burryaga’s arc in Light of the Jedi.

Even if this show is set from the perspective of the dark side, a few cameos or supporting parts played by known characters would be quite welcome.

I’m most excited for Andor, because I’m a huge Rogue One fan, but after that I’m most looking forward to The Acolyte. Not just because of the High Republic setting, but because it’s described as a mystery-thriller series. That sounds very interesting, and I enjoyed Russian Doll too. Of course when the firs trailer for the Obi-Wan series rolls out, it could upset my ranking. I do love Deborah Chow’s episodes of The Mandalorian.

I just love the setting of the High Republic. I was always hoping for Old republic material but high republic has filled that gap for me.

Having appearances from characters from the books would be a little tricky as this series is set at the tail end of the High Republic era, close to 200 years after where the books currently are. Burryaga could work since Wookiees are so long lived but I don’t know that they would want to tie their hands like that. As that would mean you now know he survives up to that time and that would undercut any tension from stories with him in it that precede it.

This exclusive report from The Illuminerdi suggests that the lead role of The Acolyte has pretty much been cast:

https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2021/12/08/the-acolyte-amandla-stenberg/

THE ACOLYTE: LUCASFILM IN ADVANCED NEGOTIATIONS WITH AMANDLA STENBERG TO PLAY MYSTERIOUS LEAD CHARACTER: EXCLUSIVE by Caitlin Tyrrell

It has some more interesting tidbits about the nature of the role too. Amandla Stenberg goes by both ‘she’ and ‘they’, is lesbian, and is an outspoken feminist, which sadly means The Acolyte is only going to receive more hate from the usual trolls in this fandom. But fuck em. I’m very glad to learn a little bit more about the series as it’s one of the upcoming projects I’m most intrigued by, and with previous acclaimed roles in movies like The Hunger Games and The Hate U Give, Amandla seems more than capable of trying out Star Wars!

“Remember, the Force will be with you. Always.”

I’m definitely hoping this gives us more info on that whole sith cult stuff. And also that post-Rotj shows eventually give us more info about the whole cloning shenanigans side of it.
