I don't think any of us are currently in a position to know, so I see no point in assuming that any home video release is accurate.

So nor it is any HDTV version, isn't true?

Well, I agree we (community) should find a grading which has a common liking, and then work on it. Or, just release two versions, one with the new color grading, one with the old one...

But before it, I'd like to have the new HDTV version under my hand - actually, inside my HDD... any help about this?

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

I didn't see it on torrents anywhere. Maybe it's on Usenet, I don't know. The guy who uploaded 2GB version also isn't responding.

Of course!  Perhaps I should have said: "...any version we currently have..."  I'll edit my post.  My point is that none of us, as far as I am aware, are in a position to know what the original colors were, so there are no "right" colors to which we have access.  We either keep the colors of the new cap, which will undoubtedly be the main source for a custom version, or correct it to give an aesthetically pleasing (but not theatrically accurate) result.

That was kinda my point, I remember it being more Cameron blue (not TEAL!) than brown of the HDTV

Or one of you nice americans could try for these http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-ABYSS-WRITTEN-DIRECTED-BY-JAMES-CAMERON-SET-OF-60-FILM-CELLS-/121096851139?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c31ef4ec3

First link is just press images.

Second seems to be actual from the film (thought you can't zoom in, it might be just full screen pan & scan dvd grabs. The colors looks like the new version anyway.

The only variation I see on the new HDTV, is that some of that aqua tint creeps in in the scenes where there was already a green tint initially. That's due to the HD 4K capture, not any new "I'm going teal!" crazyness from the director.

You have to realise that technology dictates many variations in colors, you can tell something is from the 80's when you see a VHS transfer, as opposed to a recent 4K transfer etc.

I'm afraid I don't see where you made that point (at least with any clarity), nor do I see how it bears on mine.

I take it we assume the old HDTV was correct?

Not sure I get your hostile tone when i am agreeing with you but whatever

I'm frustrated, rather than hostile, because I find it hard to work out what you're saying half the time because you rarely write in sentences, which makes it harder to get your tone, which I often find brusque.  I saw that post but wasn't sure whether you were obliquely saying that we were barking up the wrong tree or suggesting a course of action.  Obviously, it's now clear that it's the former.

Nearly Blu-ray quality. All credit to ScottDS :) Another incredible job by Lowry/Cameron.

I'm not sure where these screenshots come from. But they are nearly Blu-ray quality and look fabulous. As good as anything that Lowry has previously done. This is on the level of Aliens, The Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar. But I've expected nothing less from Cameron.

This might have come from a very high quality Cinemax HDTV. But that torrent posted on TPB is either heavily compressed, or just an older master. The color grading is different too.

The screenshots are from the new cap.  It does look good.

By the way, the screenshots aren't showing up because image tags work differently on this forum.  See the help section.

That is one of the most insulting things I have ever read, you trumped up little child.

Chewtobacca: When you say those great screenshots are "from the new cap," does that mean the Cinemax HDTV capture stated earlier in the thread?  If you know that, then you just may know something most of us really want to know!  (Where to get it, of course!)

The new TPB-9938130 has no watermarks, but is very blurry... like the Cinemax screenshots here.

Yes.  That's the one.

Okay...  So...  If you know which one it is for sure, does that mean you've gotten your hands on it?  ...and could you describe how you managed that?

Thanks.

I have heard a rumor that Team Blu is planning a release of the Abyss as a dual version release using seamless branching.

James Cameron recently did a Reddit AMA, but it doesn't look like anyone bothered to ask him about Terminator and Abyss getting a blanket teal tint.  I'd kind of like to hear his justification for it, although I suspect the answer might not be very satisfying (if he even would be willing to answer).

The new capture does look really nice.  I was very pleased to see it in it's theatrical form as well.  It's been awhile.

Very nice indeed.

I doubt he'd even respond to that. That's the thing with AMAs unfortunately. Some famous person hops in, answers three top questions, and hops out. Which would usually be retarded "I don't have a question, but I love you, please acknowledge me!!!"... Even if you somehow managed to post your question before the thread gets flooded, no one would upvote it. :/

I'm sure he would give the standard, unsatisfying its my film/its the way its suppose to look anyway.

If you look at the old master, the teal is there. It's just covered with a pink tint, like Aliens was.
