Finally got around to watching Redeemed, so here's my thoughts on that and II.

Superman II: The Hybrid Edition was quite excellent in nearly every respect. The only thing that bugged me was an issue with my cheapo DVD player, which flickered the image wherever there was a cut between the two sources. That's weird. The movie and editing themselves, though, is masterful. I really like the Donner Cut for its purism, but if you're watching the Superman series in order, you can't watch it in sequence; it doesn't make sense, and the ending hurts a lot. With the Hybrid, you don't have to worry about any of it, and this will probably be the version of the flick I watch from now on.

Superman Redeemed was a bit weirder for me. I haven't seen Superman III or IV since I was a small child, maybe 6 years old tops. Needless to say, I remember diddly-squat. I was going to check them out again soon, actually, until I heard about this edit and then I figured I'd save it until I checked this out to just see how it played. My gut reaction: plays pretty weird. If this edit had been a normal movie, theatrically released, I'd think that the boys upstairs left quite a few bugs unfixed. The pace is weird, and the tone isn't really consistent. However, looking past that, I honestly couldn't tell which stuff was from Superman III and which was from Superman IV. (Being more familiar with II, the Paris scene stood out to me, but the way it was edited in here worked incredibly well for the newly constructed story.) What's more, the actual story that was constructed in this version is impressively coherent. This is definitely one of the better examples of what a fan edit can be: a complete reimagining of a story given available footage.

Overall, ADM, some of your finest work to date. Can't wait to check out the Returns edit.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Lois takes a much-deserved vacation because she's clearly been through an ordeal with Zod and is suffering some memory loss. Perry gives her three much-deserved weeks off, and with that thong bikini, she's clearly planning on getting some action in Bermuda fo' sho'. She probably bangs some pool-boy, which might be where she thinks the kid comes from. Unfortunately, her vacation is interrupted by Perry when there is a crisis in Paris. Like any correspondent, she files the Paris story from the road, then finishes her time off.

Some dialog trims I did actually accomplish this service to the plot.

An interesting tidbit about the official timeline:
Clark notes it's his 15-year reunion and his poster says class of '65. That makes it take place in 1980, not 1983. Lester's SII takes place in the same year, so it does immediately follow. However, Donner's SII takes place in 1978, immediately following STM. Clark left Smallville in '65 around harvest time, probably spent a few months slowly trekking north (not running at super-speed) and then spent 12 years or so training in the Fortress.

I prefer to ignore the year, and wish all references to specific times weren't in Superman movies. Superman is timeless, and anything that dates the story opens up a can of anachronisms. But I didnt' bother to edit them out.

Noticed that, as you said. No big worry, but you could've had DS to clean it up, perhaps.

Anyway, I saw it again for the third time, and I love it still. Its odd, given its a Lester-made film (mostly), but it really follows on Donner's I and II (Hybrid) quite well. Its really amazing how well it ties, and how SR fits too. What I love more is, Superman matures at the end, giving him more weight on his shoulders for SR.

Really, excellent edit, ADM. And about the lois-coming-to-ill-Clark scene, I understand you cut it because Lois returned immediately to vacation after the Paris scene? Just asking.

Also, uploaded the dvd on my pc, and it runs fine. My guess is the dvd wasn't written extremely well, but no biggie - I'm so happy to have it I don't really mind.

Once again, ADM, THANK YOU for giving us another solid Christopher Reeve chapter that we sit and watch with I, II and SR.

I will give a thorough review on the film itself, sometime later. Right now, I wanted to, again, congratulate you for the technicality and expertise on this re-edit.

Really, big thanks!

Okay, ADM has sent me the Superman Returns edit raw files.

PiF is in effect: First 3 to PM me get the same 2 discs of raw files I got. I'm gonna see about upping to rapidshare too, unless Dark Jedi beats me to it (he's got way more practice at it anyway.)

I can't wait to compile and run it on the projector

This thing moves quite well. I watched it with my girl and she didn't even catch that scenes were cut and new scenes inserted. Sure, that could speak to her unfamiliarity with the film, but I think it also speaks to how well this thing was edited that it feels so organic.

There's maybe only TWO edits I caught, and that's only because of shortened music fades. Everything else is done so perfectly that even *I* had a problem catching it, and I suggested half of the edits myself

Not for nothing, but this ranks right up there with some of ADM's best work, if not the best. Maybe I'm biased, but I think that'll hold up.

Still have yet to recieve a PM for the PiF. The DVD-Rom extras (if you're looking to shrink down to single layer, it'd essentially be disc 2) are top notch on top of the feature.

Sup Returns is dual layer only?

yeah, I think that must have been to seriously preserve picture quality--as the job Warner's did on the theatrical version wasn't the best in the first place. I peeled off everything BUT the feature and shrunk it down to single layer to see how that would work, and there were some artifacts, but nothing too bad, certainly not enough to separate itself tremendously from the original dvd.

but just the film is around 7.5 gigs. That's not counting the extras he put on the thing. I'm sure you could separate them out to "movie" "bonus disc" and do two single layers, but if you're anal about watching compressed movies, you might wanna stick to the DL. Upping it as DL (or mailing it out) at least gives you the choice as to whether you wanna shrink it back down or get your dual layer burn on.

How big is the DVD_RoM folder? And did you use DVD Shrink to make the single layer? For something like this I'd probably use Rebuilder + CCE. Usually 5-9 passes should do the trick for feature length.

awww, thanks ADM. I got extra extras!

I should have something rar'd up and uploaded to rapidshare soon. 1 of the 3 PiF's will probably be handling that for me (he has better upload speed) and the other 2 should have theirs in the post by tomorrow morning.

DJ, if you want a copy, feel free to PM me, I'll send it out.

The extra extras are a collection of Superman Returns wallpapers, plus some smokin-hot images of Erica Durance as Lois Lane from Smallville. I think that's it, though who knows. I assembled this like the way I cook ... a little of this and a little of that, making the recipe different each time.

Just saw Redeemed and was impressed by how well it worked as an edit.

Besides the out of synch audio at the beginning, I have another technical comment (something I noticed in Superman II as well). When you go from the credits to the movie at the beginning, the letterbox bars and picture go gray. It's fairly noticeable on my TV (and is yet another bug in Womble).
If I recall correctly from when I had the same issue, it's because the cropping bars are removed during fade-ins/outs so they end up not appearing black enough on some displays. It gives the impression that the main picture area fades out and the bars are fading up.

Besides that... very impressed by both the technical and plotting.

Btw, did anyone else notice Harry Potter's Uncle Vernon was one of the terrorists on the Eiffel Tower (the one controlling the nuke)?

Thank you for bringing us the ideal version of Superman II!

"Superman II: The Hybrid Cut" has been posted to a.b.dvd & a.b.dvd5, with the nzb also crossposted to a.b.nzb.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

Thanks to Bizzle, I git the Superman Returns raw files and make a DL disc. Took me a minute to figure out the DVD Rom folder was in the Video _ts folder, but no problems.

I must say, ADM, I liked the final result of your edit much better than what came out in the theaters. No more creepy stalking ad spying from Superman! The movie flows better and s tighter Plus it now meshes better with the Donner version of Superman II. I've since made a single layer version without the DVD Rom extras. I made the extras as a separate disc. I think it came out very good since I used DD Rebuilder and CCE at 9 passes. I can post some captures later.
