Computer Question

Howdy All. I'm currently studying for a computer security certification, so I'm always on the sites looking for news.

Just wondering if anyone's heard of a story in the news lately of someone's thumb being chopped off in order for someone to steal his car that had biometric security on it? I'm kicking myself because I can't remember the source, but I did see this reported somewhere. Pretty good case for two-factor security!!

Yeah, I heard that in my marketing class a week ago. They were talking that they may now expand the security screens so that they will have to detect a pulse in addition to scanning the thumbprint.

Can't find a source, either.

I heard a similar story, but it wasn't the same.

It happened in Taiwan or China or somewhere in Southeast Asia. Some corporate head-honcho was kidnapped and had his thumb removed for the same reason. The kidnappers used the thumb to get into corporate HQ.

I recently read about biometrics that are being developed that also check for body-heat, which would remove the possibility of removing body parts.

You don't have to check for a pulse - just a change in density or reflectivity (due to lack of blood.)

I checked Snopes (cynic that I am), and found nothing.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Found it! Was in Malyasia...

Thumb Story

When they make changes, they need to publicize them so the thieves know the thumb alone will not help them!

But then they'll just figure out a way to simultae a pulse by surgically attaching the thumb to their own hand or something.

Reminds me of something I heard on Deep Space 9 at one point. When Sisko was wondering if his father was a changeling, his father says "Go ahead and take your blood tests. Don't you realize that there isn't a test in the world a smart man can't figure his way around".

dont even need to get that complicated, its really not that hard to just have a device that pumps/cycles 'blood' through the removed finger and also keeps it at a nice 98.6

thats what i never understood, Mystique in X-Men, ok, ill give her the voice thing (one would assume she needs to her the voice first though) and ill give her the appearence (she would obvioulsy need at least visual contact with who she changes into) but the whole being able to beat the retinal scan on Prof X's door to cerebral? come on, how does she/her body know how to replicate his retinal patterns. Can she do finger prints? or what about blood. all those things shouldnt be able to be replicated by her body unless she has some dna sample of the person. And wouldnt Xavier be aware that she would have this ability and build in some sort of safeguard against it...
(sorry for the off topic, but it kinda relates, and it totally bugs me cause it makes no sense (even in the world of sci fi there needs to be limits so its believable) )

"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin
