The "ADigitalMan Special Editions" DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released) — Page 6

The reason I ask is that in my investigations I've found that AC3 audio appears to be about 80ms (2 PAL frames) in advance of the video (even when Headac3e says there's 0ms delay).

Standalone DVD players seem to allow for this delay, but software DVD players don't. I've verified this by videoing the screen of my laptop and of my TV, both playing Star Wars, then looking at the waveforms of the captured audeo. With my standalone player and TV, the music began in the same frame as the words STAR WARS first appear, but on the laptop the sound started first.

What first tipped me off was watching my first test burns of my SE LD->DVD edit and noticing out-of-sync dialogue.

ADigitalMan, could you tell me exactly what specifications you save with when you used Womble MPEG-VCR??

Or does making so many cuts and edits in the video screw it up?

Oh, and how do you save audio and video seperatley?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Hal, I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard, which is a slightly more robust program. I'm not sure if the export tool is the same as the MPEG-VCR, but if it is, the export window has four tabs, for [General] [Video] [Audio] [Monitor]. On the General tab, you can either "separate" the one designated output file into two files (a video file and an audio file) or they can be "multiplexed" into one file, where those two quoted terms actually toggle the function back and forth on the interface.

Ooohhh, I see. I thought you used MPEG-VCR.

I downloaded a trial of MPEG Video Wizard recently, but couldn't figure out how it works. I searched Videohelp for a guide on how to edit/cut/copy/insert with it like I had been doing with MPEG-VCR but couldn't find any.

If MPEG VIdeo Wizard is like MPEG-VCR, than I should be able to learn how to use it if I can find a tutorial.

I'll have to start all editing over, but that's good. Now I know exactly where and what to edit, and it'll be much easier this time around, and the end product would probably be better.

Here's what I've been doing using MPEGVCR:
http://www.videohelp.com/mpegvcredit.htm

If someone knows how to do just that with Video Wizard, than I've got it made.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

It's a pretty easy program. You have a timeline which you can drag the m2v file onto in one track, and two audio tracks onto for your AC3 files. Having two makes it pretty easy to set up crossfades and the like. Make a hard cut, drag the new clip from the first track down onto the second track, then extend the "borders" of the clips and create manual fades. I'm oversimplifying, of course, but a little experimentation (especially with right-clicking on everything you see) will unveil a world of options.

All I need is to be able to make direct cuts between different video sources.

How do I just select a 'mark in' and 'mark out' point, and cut it away? It'll just let me cut an entire clip away, but not a certain part like that.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Author

I drop my cursor on the frame where the cut should be made, highlight the relevant video and audio tracks, and hit the scissors tool. Then I find the end of the segment I want to cut out and do the same. Then I slide the area post-cut up against the area pre-cut.

On your ANH single layer version, witch sound mix is used? Ben makes the old Dewback sound again, but is the entire thing the SE audio?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Nevermind, I should have looked at the original post first.

Ok...

A very kind person on these forums (oojason) sent me all 5 edits the other week, and it's only until now I've managed to watch them.
Episdoe 1 & 2 have been talked about and I agree with all the positive comments.

Great stuff....

But................

I watched ESB the other day, and all I can say to Mr DigitalMan is I love you In a manly kind of way

You've taken my fave film of all time, turnred what I can only describe as a heartbreaking moment when I watched the official DVD, into the best version of Empire I have to date.

Genious!!! Boba Fetts voice is now back in all it's glory!!! No more pissing Shuttle scene!!!! (well apart from that little scene of showing the shuttle flying towards the Star Destroyer which is all we need to see. The SE version just totaly fucked up the flow and pace of Lukes rescue. IMO the worst change out of them all.). "Bring my shuttle " is also back......Bloody fanastic mate....And the Emporer scene is just great. Same dialog as the original, but having the proper Emperor just makes all six films flow better.

You are my hero now man.

All I can say is thank you for going to the effort to make these edits.

just a quick update--i have nine discs of the "new" EpI corrected edit that I'm sending out tomorrow...ADM said he's been getting some questions from a few folks on his pyramid, and I'm betting if you're waiting on one, I'm the guy holding it up.

so again, they're going out tomorrow. i don't have e-mail addresses for my recipients, just snail mail, and I didn't want to presume it was okay to post your full names on the boards. if you have a specific quesiton as to whether you're on my list, lemme know via PM and I'll let you know if you're on my list. 3 of them on my list are going to the UK; the other six are US addys.

thanks for your patience!

HotRod ... awww shucks. But seriously, thanks.

BTW, hold off on circulating Ep 1 far and wide until we've figured out how to get you a corrected copy. I'll speak with Jason privately and we'll figure something out.

Hal, I see you found your answer, but I thought I'd reiterate just for good measure.

My custom audio edit is the only one on the Single-Layer version of ANH. It's a hybrid of the 1997 and 2004. The Dual-Layer version (which is making its rounds I assume outside of the regular pyramid because of the lack of ubiquitousness of DL burners) has the custom audio edit as the default, but also allows you to choose the 1997 5.1 audio, the 2004 5.1 audio, the 2004 2.0 audio and the infamous heresy mix. I've heard zero comments on this latter one so far. And you thought Lucas raped your childhood? Bah!

Ep II is up on that Spleeny place this afternoon. Rik, as always, the community owes you the greatest debt.

Any chance of making the AC3 file available to download for us not in the pyramid? Or just the corrected section only maybe?

I have the file, but it is 414 MB. I'm unsure where I can host something of that size (anonymously and for free).

How about just the corrected section?

Well, AC3 doesn't quite work that way. To get just the corrected section, you have to take the whole enchilada, then strip out the video and audio streams to their separate elements, then put them back together using the new audio file. Then rebuild the menus and chapter stops. Quite a process actually, so for a forty cent disc and a 37 cent stamp it's easier to pay a whole disc forward. Funny that a movie can be manufactured and shipped for under a dollar and the industry is crying about lost profits.

Yeah, because the actual movies only cost $1.43 to make as well!

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Thing is... I'm gonna have to reauthor the DVDs anyway as I'm re-encoding them to PAL, so that's all part of my process.

Well, AC3 doesn't quite work that way.

If you're proposing to upload the new AC3 file to let users rebuild their own discs, you could just send out the corrected section along with instructions, or a C program to patch the ripped AC3 file.

DE

I'm no C programmer, but is is possible to patch the middle of a compressed AC3 file like that? I'd have thought the file hashing would be greatly disturbed from the point of the edit forward, but if there's a way around it, I'm all ears.

I tried to secure a free host, but even their "unlimited" disc space didn't like my 415 MB file.

I don't know anything about patching an AC3 file, but you could downmix it to a wav and just distribute the edited section.

Trouble is, you wouldn't be able to patch a section of WAV into a 5.1 AC3. If DE can figure out a way to do this programmatically (and he is damn near genius at C as his edit proves) then that may be a solution. But otherwise, it's a matter of demuxing the disc and remuxing with the corrected AC3 file, which is an entirely different file as far as computers are concerned.

Ok thanks all the same ADigitalMan, but I've now got someone to provide me with a fresh copy. I wasn't quite aware that it was a 5.1 mix.

Anyhoo, here's the covers I'm designing for your edits

Oh, that 5.1 mix is days of my life I can't get back.

Nice covers! If they're up in Hi-Res, I'd like to snag them. Are you doing the OT as well?

By the way ... ROTS is PG-13. Small detail.
