That original trilogy change you wouldn't mind

Author

Hi.

We all hate most of Lucas' changes since the 1981 re-release of Star Wars. I've been thinking about it since I rediscovered the original trilogy, with the GOUT DVDs, what is the change George Lucas could do in a future release of the original trilogy you would see as an improvement?

I'll start with mine: Vader's French voice is the same in Episodes 5, 6 and 3. It is the right one because it's very close to James Earl Jones' voice. But in Star Wars, it's a different voice that is not "Vader like" I wouldn't mind at all Lucas calling the actor of ESB, ROTJ and Episode 3 to re-voice the original Star Wars.

What's yours?

"Let's face it, the Ewoks sucked, dude" -Hurley, Lost 5x13-Some like it Hoth.

Please bear with me if I tend to get too excited about anything or say too much, I have issues.

Adding Episode IV: A New Hope to the opening scroll for Star Wars.

That's the only one.

I could have sworn JEJ finally got a screen credit in the SE's?

I wouldn't mind seeing the Biggs scenes reinstated, as it gives Luke a little more depth. They are deeply ingrained in my mind thanks to the old Marvel comics anyway. ;)

Where were you in '77?

If they just have to change stuff, I'd like to see some of that deleted material polished up and put back into JEDI '83. (namely the Luke/Han goodbye from the sandstorm, the bunker shootout and Darth choking the guy. All nice moments in the vein of stuff from the previous 2 movies)

Removing garbage mattes. But I'd still mind a little.

What a wonderfull idea!. I wouldnt mind if they could replace all the space shots with CGI or better with new minature/models. I think of it like with the Yavin Battle way of thinking. They replaced with better models and animation shots that they were needed tp/ Also all the original effects should be replaced with decent ones such as lasers blue screen effects and mattes :-)

I had to think a while on this to even come up with something. Honestly, I don't think any changes are needed.

But if LFL just had to make changes, it should be along these lines:

- Digitally redo all composites using original elements (to remove mattes and dupe grain)

- Correct any "errors" (wonky props and sets, effects errors)

- Possibly use cgi to correct bad ship movements (BUT NO CGI SHIPS)

- Possibly use cgi to smooth bad puppet movements (BUT NO CGI CHARACTERS)

- Use the original 6-channel mixes to come up with modern 7.1 mixes that don't sound like crap (NO NEW SOUNDS)

In a nutshell: fix what you have, add nothing new! Basically, they should be the exact same movies, only with the edges polished for modern audiences.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Release them on Blu-ray.

Galatians 2: 20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

I don't hate most of the changes. I hate some of the changes. What I hate is not having the choice to watch whichever one I'm in the mood for without seriously compromised picture quality.

But additional changes I would like to see to the Special Editions would include:

-Recomposited effects (ships, lightsabers, etc).

-Add the correct Death Star plans to A New Hope.

-Add some Clone voices to a few of the Stormtroomers.

-Add a some surface shots of Alderaan getting destroyed.

I don't mind when Lucas changes stuff in the Special Edition as long as he keeps the original version as an option.

The only change i would accept is to change them back. Restore them to their original pristine state, no expense spared Lucas is a billionaire he can afford it.

As long as the original versions were preserved as well:

-Re-rotoscope all of the blaster bolts

-Fix shots of Luke igniting and de-igniting his lightsabre to remove the jump cuts and so the blade 'grows' and 'shrinks' like it should

-Remove all garbage mattes (there are still some visible ones in the BDs)

-Restore the Anchorhead scenes to ANH

-Restore the scene of Vader telepathically contacting Luke while he builds his lightsabre to ROTJ

ROJ:

Edit out Han saying 'it's me' on Endor and 'I love you' to Leia at the bunker. They water down his character.

Get rid of Ben's 'a certain point of view' angle during his conversation with Luke. Just fess up. He had good reasons.

Put a longer pause before Leia says to Luke 'I wish I could go with you'. She delivers the line waaaay to quickly.

Williams' music for the SE ending of ROTJ is great, but I still love Yub Nub. It may not be as epic or sweeping, but I think it serves its purpose. The music at 2:10, as Luke turns away from the Force ghosts, is maybe my single favorite moment in the entire OT. It has such a sweet melancholy that seems to encapsulate my entire childhood in just a few notes of music. Such a signature moment for me.

Yeah it's not great. Although Victory celebration is such boring 90s milquetoast, truly the Van Hagar of star wars. I always wondered what temp music Richard Marquand used for his director's cut (I believe he finished it before Williams had recorded anything).

Some may say I'm biased because I grew up with the Special Editions, but even though I saw them afterwards, I still far prefer the original versions. There are very few changes I like better than the original, but Victory Celebration is one of them. I think it's not only beautiful, but a far, far more fitting piece of music to end the saga.

I'd like "Victory Celebration" more if

1. It didn't accompany all those stupid offworld celebration scenes

and

2. It synced with the Ewok celebration footage like "Yub Nub" did.
