Idea: 'That Was Spinal Tap - A Rock and Roll Creation' - a supplemental project?

 (Edited)

A few years back, VH1 aired a 1/2 hour “Where are they now?” special featuring new footage/interviews as well as the band appearing on the show “The List,” discussing rock moments in character. I think it would be great to see if anyone on here has these appearances, as well as any other vintage Tap TV appearances, to compile into a supplemental DVD. This could feature the various Tap commercials (Sportscenter, IBM, etc), their SNL appearances, Talk show performances etc.

So my question is, what Tap stuff does everyone here have, and is there interest in this project. I have the VH1 shows on VHS, but no way to transcode it, though I’d happily donate it to someone who can. Chip Rowe’s Tap website - http://www.spinaltapfan.com/ is a great source for knowledge on all things Tap.

Your thoughts?

I've got the VH1 special, The List, a bunch of other extra stuff and the 4.5hr workprint on a 3-DVD set. There aren't any menus and the audio is out of sync, which is unfortunate, but it's not unwatchable because of it. I haven't taken the time to fix it since I got it a few years ago.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I would LOVE a set of this! (I humbly ask for a copy for QA control when finished.)

Hey, if you wanna take the time to de-mux the audio and the video, re-sync it properly, and re-mux it into a properly synched entity, I'll be happy to send you a copy.

I'd had plans for a Tap Set, consisting of a lot. They really have done a lot of TV Performances, most of which I only have audio of. I'm still in the gathering phase and would love to get a dvd of that VH1 Special, I remember seeing it a time ago.

When I receive Rev. Beastly's discs, I'll resync them.

I know this is a longshot, but does anyone here own the Criterion DVD of Spinal Tap? With the stuff that Rev. Beastly is sending, I'd like to make a comprehensive compilation of all material. Something in the vein of the Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition Vol 2 is doing. I own the Special Edition, but need the extra stuff on the Criterion DVD that the SE lacks. After that, I'd like to find some other things to add... (And I know you have them!!! ).

It might still be seeded on MySpleen, that's where I got my copy of the Criterion Collection version from.

Your discs should be arriving soon, by the way.

Cool. I have found the Criterion DVD on the newsgroups, but I have a severe download limit... I *might* be able to swing it, however.

Anyone have "Return of Spinal Tap" on Laserdisc? Is there footage on it that the DVD doesn't have?

I think there is footage on the TV version that the DVD doesn't have. The quality may possibly be better than the retail DVD on this LD(thats a big maybe).

I now have the Criterion release. I should have enough to make the first disc. The first disc being the movie and all three commentaries (two from the Criterion and one from the Special Edition). The second disc might be a go as well, consisting of all the bonus material from both discs. We'll see.

Anyone have a high res scan of the Smell The Glove laserdisc cover?

Okay people... I'm accumulating a lot of material, but still need some more. If you don't want to know what's on this project and want to be suprised, stop reading now. Here's what I'm looking for in DVD quality:

1. The American Express commercial using "Gimme Some Money"
2. The Nigel Tufnel Volkswagon commercial
3. The Black Death sketch from the second episode of the Richard Pryor show

Anyone have these?!? I need them badly. Youtube is good for watching on the internet, but not for archiving.

Wow. Nice work everyone. I never knew half of this stuff existed. The band was also on SNL a few times, right?

The Pryor clip is up at - http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/12/richard_pryor_f.html

Tap was also on the 1996 Brit Awards, which was aired on VH1 I believe, in which they gave a best new artist award to Eels. Add that to the list.

Most of this stuff is nigh-impossible to find, so if anyone has it, or knows how to get it in good quality, (Yes, better than youtube) I would really appreciate it.

I have a live show in flac format right now- I also got a hold of the making of STARS. The heavy metal answer to we are the world. They participated in that as well.

Okay...

I have a lot of promised material waiting in the wings. Some of it has been sent (thanks ). However, others have told me that they will send their stuff to me in a couple weeks, so it might take awhile for this to get started. I have started on the first disc, and will probably have to put this project out on a disc-by-disc basis, due to the huge, and truly unending, amount of material that is out there. (Similar to other large projects on this board.)

If *anyone* thinks they might have *anything* (or knows someone who does) to contribute, I would greatly appreciate it. (Who knows? Someone just might have the AMEX and Volkswagen commercials on their tapes from CSI: Miami.)

Thanks!

I'm the one who made the massive divx compilation that has appeared on KG and Zaerc. It included the movie with all the commentaries, the sequel, the rough cut (in sync), all the extras from the Criterion and MGM discs, the soundtrack, some music videos from the second album, and an episode of Comic Strip Presents, which obviously had a small influence on the film. The only piece I was missing was the clip on the Criterion LD with the band performing and Reiner introducing as Wolfman Jack. Since the last time I uploaded it, I acquired the performance on SNL of Big Bottom (which connoisseurs will notice has a slight alteration to appease the censors) and an in character radio piece that runs about an hour. You could also include the episode of The Simpsons they appeared on.

Any material you need from me, I can provide the originals, such as the movie, rough cut, sequel, or extras, everything else would be in divx format.

I sent him the rough cut already, but I'd be interested in seeing if yours is higher quality.

I don't think I've seen it mentioned here yet: I have the "Goat Boy" IBM commercial, but in *horrible* quality. Has anybody managed to pick this up in decent quality? It should definitely be included in any Spinal Tap project, if possible.
