Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released) — Page 46

The sound from the Grindhouse version was from a print.

This is from cinch:

just checked the bluray copy and it's the l.a. fuji print audio and it is dolby-a decoded.

main reason why it sounds so crappy is the low bitrate.

Hey, Team Negative1.

This is my first post on here, and I was curious about this. Have you guys done or will be doing a restoration of 1977 Star Wars?

Also, what quality is this restoration? 1080p?

Loving the updates. I'm sure you guys here it a lot, but it's worth repeating: thank you so much for the work you're putting in. I have been following this project for years, and I cannot wait to it all come to fruition. I don't comment a lot, but I'm sure I speak for a large number of other similarly silent observers that I know are just as excited as I am. Keep up the great work

I would like to echo the above!!  I'm a fairly silent follower as I have little by way of expert knowledge or opinion that I can contribute - simply that I follow the work on this project across the three films and am so grateful for everything being done for the fans.

As SS4DarthPayne said - "keep up the great work"

I third that! I don't post here as I also have little to contribute

Don't ever let that stop you.

Still working on Reels 5, and 6 for the cleanup on Empire. Here is a shot of where the new work drive, where it is being assembled.

Lots of other good things on there.

Question - it appears you scanned 4K.

Are your scans 4K scope or did you scan 2K and once de squeezed you get 4K?

I just finished my 35mm scanner and I get 4K scope scans, other question, do you de squeeze the scope frame and then scale down to 1080 or do you scale down to 1080 and then de squeeze ? just curious about your workflow.

I'm also curious how this works, as 2k for scope is only 1828:1556.

Judging by all the screenshotcomparison links, I'm assuming they were working from an actual 4k scan, as everything seems very finely resolved even at 1920:817 res.

But I'd also like to know what comes first, the scaledown or the desqueeze.

The 4k scans are full resolution frames scaled down to 2k and then to 1080p.

We don't have all the SE prints, we will get to them all eventually.

U-He Satin is probably the only digital version that exists.  I discovered this capability yesterday while researching the issue—I'd been aware of its existence as a tape emulation plugin before, but hadn't had a reason to look more closely since I already have the Ampex ATR-102 and Studer A800 from Universal Audio, which are extremely accurate reproductions of popular studio tape machines from the 70's.  (The Ampex was a 2-track mastering deck, while the Studer was a multichannel machine, very similar to the one used to record the score for Star Wars.)

It looks like the U-He plugin is a more general 'tape effect' rather than an exact recreation of all the electronic nuances of one particular machine, like the UAD plugins.  But it does appear to be the only software solution for decoding a track that has been recorded with Dolby noise reduction.  Dolby themselves have never made a digital version, so either their hardware or this plugin would have to be used to get the right sound from the film prints.

Assuming the Wikipedia article on Dolby A is correct, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to recreate the exact multiband processing necessary for decoding; it's simply a matter of setting the thresholds and attack/release times for the compression and expansion to the right values.  The U-He plugin is well viewed for its quality, so in all likelihood its reproduction of the Dolby process is an accurate one; and given its high rate of internal oversampling, any aliasing distortion should be virtually nonexistent.  It would, however, be necessary to ensure that the analog signal from the film print has been digitized at the same reference level that the plugin operates at (ie, 0 VU = -18 dBFS, or however the plugin is set; looks like it has a variable calibration capability).  Otherwise the thresholds of the processor will be incorrect, and frequencies will be boosted or lowered at the wrong levels, yielding an inaccurate sound.  The input to the plugin can be trimmed to the appropriate level easily enough; but the importance of using proper calibration cannot be overemphasized.

Satin doesn't have Dolby SR capability, so it wouldn't be any use for film prints encoded with that, but I'm not sure how useful that would be anyway.  SR is much more complicated than Dolby A, and hardly ever used for music recording since digital was taking over around the same time, so I expect it wasn't worthwhile for U-He to try to implement it.

kpmgeek said:

Dolby B is not compatible with Dolby A.  And if I remember right, Satin has some issues with how it decodes.

What issues?  I haven't seen anything about this . . .

Sorry to dredge this issue back up after so long, but after much pain on this front, either this software and all its related software is far too modern, or I am far too old.  I'm just gonna let this one stay put until we either get another capture of the Latino dub with NR enabled, or someone else wants to take a crack at the software side.  This may very well be fine and perfectly functional software, but all it did was give me a headache, and that's coming from someone who thinks nothing of attacking a binary with a hex editor and thinks Perl is nifty.

After a hiatus of a few months. Work on ESB v2 has resumed, with the last 2 reels being worked on. No completion date estimate yet. Will post again, once there is another milestone.

The other print of Empire will probably start restoration work next year, and thanks to the color correction tools, that will help speed up that portion of it.

So are the two sets of prints going to be combined into a ‘best of’ release, or are they to remain separate?

Glad to hear the news! Keep it up!

V2? Did I miss something? Was there a V1 that wasn’t the Grindhouse?

Author

This will be V2 compared to the first original grindhouse release. The prints will remain separate, since the newer print is of higher quality.

Some friends and I were going to have a Star Wars OT marathon before TFA, and I decided to use the Grindhouse version of ESB. So to that end I have made a LUT to correct the colors:

How can one go about applying your LUT to the .mkv on the spleen? Also, thanks for doing this!

I used TSmuxer to convert it to a TS stream, then used Adobe Media Encoder to apply the LUT (there’s an option for this under export settings - effects in Premiere Pro and Media Encoder) and re-export it as a h.264 video with 23-25 mbs quality. The comparison images are taken from this render. There’s a little bit of loss, so you may want to bump up the quality even more, but that should get you a file that’s similar in size and quality to the original.

I’m no expert in video formats or rendering, so if there’s a better way to do this, let me know!

Looks great. About 2 days to late for my marathon viewing, though! 😃 Is it effective throughout the whole film?

Short of exporting lossless and then encoding with x264, this is probably the best way if you’re using Adobe software.

As far as I can tell, it’s good for the entire film. Although when I uploaded it, I saw that some of the green lights in the film turn slightly blue, an unfortunate side effect of removing the green tint from the film. I’ve played around with the settings some more, and I think this new LUT is better in most respects:

“higher quality” in resolution, color or just more clear reels?
