Man, this print looks great already. Can't wait to see what a little cleanup and color correction (does it even need any color correction?) do.

Author
Time

It looks a bit blue to me in some of those clips, so a colour correction would be required.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Nice to see the interest level picking up.

We will address questions as we get to them, and post some more screenshots.

Poita is correct, there is quite a large blueish tint to the whole print, and with some color correction, it looks quite natural again

Although parts of this print are in great shape, we are waiting other parts for replacements with the frames that do have damage.

It's very watchable as is, but needs some stabilization and cropping to be closer for most viewers to watch.

Thanks for doing this, and for the updates/samples.

I didn't like ROTJ all that much -- until I watched the horrid prequels.  Suddenly ROTJ wasn't so bad anymore...

Author
Time

ROTJ has always been my favorite, because it's fast-paced, lighthearted, and has some of the best visual effects in the history of film.

To me, it doesn't feel dated at all, but the others do in some parts...

It might be sacrilegious but I love jedi, except for the muppets.

Max Rebo really shit me even in 1983... really a foam-rubber blue elephant that is obvioulsy randomly hitting keys, Droopy McCool also clearly not playing the instrument and Sy Snootles so obviously not able to to stand on her own. It felt lazy when the rest of the SW trilogy was relatively realistic with its character and prop designs. They looked terrible and the music was rooted in the early 80s.

Most of the rest of the film I loved, the adrenaline rush of the speeder bikes, the insanely busy space battle scenes, the Falcon barely outrunning the DeathStar flameout, yoda looked great, the emporer looked nice and ancient and evil, I can even cope with the ewoks, but that musical number and the associated characters really seemed below par.

Those are fair criticisms, I think.  Part of the love for the '83 musical number is not because it was great at the time, but because it was made so much worse in '97.

Agreed. I also prefer "Lapti Nek" over "Jedi Rocks".But regarding the puppets in Jabba's palace: Despites certain weaknesses, they convinced me more than their CGI-counterparts did. That's one reason why I've requested to see the "Lapti Nek"-footage from the 35mm print.

I agree, it will be nice to see.

Given that he was going the route of strongly altering the trilogy, it's not surprising that this was a scene George elected to change. What he decided to do with it, however, was pretty ridiculous.

It's scenes like Lapti Nek that help to kill the pacing of Jedi, but I still love the hell out of it.  I've always felt sad that Max Rebo and his bandmates had to bite it so that Luke and company could escape.  Being the house band for a disgusting slug/despot and his executions/parties is a pretty cold way to make a living, but they are working musicians, after all, and probably don't have many places to play in Tatooine.  Especially since the Modal Nodes locked up the lucrative Mos Eisley gig.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

I agree the SE version was considerably worse, but I do wish the 83 version had been left out in the edit.

I was just so shocked at the time how bad the characters were, and then shocked again that somehow they made it even worse in '97.

Since rediscovering the original cuts of the trilogy through Harmy's projects, I've come to love Lapti Nek. It has a really nice groove, and the instrumentation and weird vocals reminds me of a lot of mid-to-late-'70s Frank Zappa stuff.

I've never seen the JEDI SE.  After seeing the comments about it here, I made the mistake of searching for Jedi Rocks on Youtube.  It's HORRIBLE!  They butchered that scene.  I also found the end scene with the added "Noooooo".  It's horrendous.  Thank God you guys are giving us a proper home release of the theatrical version (some day).

I've been thinking about JEDI lately, and I think one reason I found it so disappointing is that I waited a long 3 years after EMPIRE to see it.  EMPIRE was well worth the wait, but JEDI wasn't.

I think if I was a youngin' who plopped his ass on a couch and watched all 3 movies for the first time, JEDI wouldn't have been that bad.

Here's a visual question:  how's the lighting in the Emperor's throne room?  I'm particularly curious how the Emperor's face looks in terms of brightness.  Does the white of his face really pop or is it more subtle?

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

This shit Looks AWESOME

I have plenty of interest in all 3 films being done like this and as they should have stayed to begin with.

Thanks for taking the time, effort, and resources to do this.  It is MOST appreciated.

General, count me in.

I can't wait to see this finished.

"Alright twinkle-toes, what's your exit strategy?"

Thanks again for the interest in this. Although it's a long way off (possibly), we are still figuring out ways to speed things up.

Parts of it are in really good condition, and if we find replacements that are better, that will go a long way in completing it without doing a lot of repair work.

We will try to address some of the scenes, and maybe post some clips at some point of the most important ones.

Thanks for checking back.

Yes cannot wait to see some scenes.

I miss the Original movie. in a better quality then the gout.

Author

The GOUT for Jedi really isn't that bad.

...not that I'm saying this shouldn't happen =) Just saying, Jedi got really lucky compared to the first two.

Can't remember if it had really bad telecine wobble though, I usually watch the PAL preservation. Reinventing the Wheel, I think it was called.

Would it be possible to see Vader's shuttle flying towards the Death Star? Specifically shots which have the animated workers on the Death Star who are outside watching the shuttle fly past.

For these, and other posts, could you post a reference picture or time. It's not clear at times when you mean.

If you do that, we can post shots.

Thanks

This would be the very opening scene of Jedi, no more than 5 minutes after the crawl.

How about the emperor's close up while taunting Luke? I'd like to see how visible (or not) those optical black slugs are, and how much of a difference color correction makes when it comes to seeing them. Thanks

Something which would interest me is the original Sy Snoodles puppet from the original Lapti Nek scene. I'm especially interested in seeing how the puppet holds up compared to its CGI-counterpart in HD.
