Team Negative1 - Return of the Jedi 1983 - 35mm Theatrical Version (unfinished project) — Page 16

We've been checking out our two current prints, and extra reels. We will be combining the best parts to make a preview cut.

There is still a lot of weave in them, and the colors are off. But the prints are mostly clean, so it won't take much time to do the cleaning on them.

This will be used to consider the master release version. We think one of the best will be all that is needed. We don't forsee much of a demand for a Grindhouse or other alternate ones, since this is the least requested movie of the trilogy, and possibly the least favorite.

We are busy with Star Wars, but will continue to work on the other prints in parallel using the resources we have. We hope to have the entire Original Trilogy preserved in the best manner possible.

It is possible that this might be completed before Empire Strikes Back. We shall see.

Yeah 70mm is cropped, so although it may have extra detail you miss quite a bit.

But of course there is a demand for grindhouse ROTJ.

There's always a demand for grindhouse. ~.^

Troublesome video is a challenge for some of us. xD

I'd like a Grindhouse of this one. Of the three Team Negative 1 projects, it's definitely the one I'm most interested in.

Author
Time

We'll consider it. But besides the heads and tails. The prints are very clean, and don't really have a Grindhouse look to them.

Just bring it on guys! :)

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

Bring it on. I prefer a straight fight to all this sneaking around ;)

This movie is currently 3rd in the queue behind the other movies. However, in a few weeks, we should have a hybrid workprint, so we can see what we have to work with, and what areas to concentrate on.

Because of this, it is also the most neglected film, as far as preservations go.

Although, on the other hand, it's also the only film from the 2006 GOUT that isn't completely drowning in ugly DVNR.

True. The versions released of Return of the Jedi, have the least issues, so the only remaining one is to restore the original scenes back in, which won't be a problem.

As mentioned in the other threads, we do have 4k sources, that will be downsampled to provide the basis of the restoration. There is already plenty of detail in the shots, as shown from our previews, screens, and short clips that are up.

I wouldn't say to take greater love of the other two films as disdain for RotJ (or even most disdain of RotJ as hate toward RotJ).  Sure, I love the other movies more than RotJ, but I still love RotJ, and it shouldn't have to take a back seat.  If it is in better shape than the others, I see no reason to hold back its release, in any form you can give it to us.  Heck, this is the only -1 forum thread I follow, since the other two movies are sure to get more attention than RotJ, so I lurk here for moments like this, to voice support for the 3rd most beloved, but still beloved, Original Trilogy Star Wars film (without which, it wouldn't be a trilogy, obviously).

We're not saying we hate the movie either. However, we only have so many resources, and those are definitely directed at the first and second movies respectively, since those are our priority.

Return of the Jedi, is not being neglected. It is placed lower on the priority list, because it is the best condition, and requires the least amount of work.

Although we did release Empire Strikes Back out of order, that was a Grindhouse version. We are trying to release the trilogy restored chronologically, so Jedi would be third anyways.

The lack of a Grindhouse version was explained before, as the condition of it does not warrant a release as such.

It's good to see a few people stand up for the movie, but that follows the general consensus about the demand for it.

To tell you the truth, there are some things about ROTJ that are better than the first two movies, but in all honesty... Empire is really the best film. I find it hard to pick my very favorite Star Wars film, you basically just have to watch all three together as a package deal to feel right. haha

Right. It is important for the Trilogy, regardless of its quality. We've wouldn't have considered it, but since we acquired the resources, we will be including it.

To my eyes, your transfer looks a lot more natural. It has an organic look, where the BD has a sort of filtered digital look. Great looking samples.

Very true, but keep in mind that there hasn't even been any color correction applied.

Yes, I know. I was about to mention that the color correction will work wonders to what already looks great. The BD looks dark as hell.

I know that color correction hasn't been done, but will the final product look this flat or will it have more contrast?

To people that are new to this thread.

We already discussed the other prints, and what examples look like here:

Also Page 13 of this thread has more.

Many of these questions have been answered in the previous pages, there are not that many of them to check.

There is something seriously wrong with the atmosphere on the Death Star. Luke's face is turning purple!
