The Jim Henson Co. has set Genndy Tartakovsky to direct Power of the Dark Crystal, a sequel to 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal, reports Variety.

Tartakovsky, who created the animated series hits Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory and Star Wars: Clone Wars, will involve his Orphanage Animation Studios to take the lead on the CG animation elements for the puppet-driven film.

Henson will secure a domestic distributor by the time the film begins production in late summer. Annette Duffy and David Odell wrote the script.

Set hundreds of years after the first film, the sequel follows a mysterious girl made of fire who steals a shard of the crystal in hopes of reigniting the dying sun.

Cool! I'm a fan of the original and it sounds like this is in good hands!

Isn't it kind of late to be doing a sequel to the Dark Crystal?
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'd rather see an original storied sequel than a remake. Same question about sequels goes for any movie or franchise I guess. Or *cough* prequels.

This has potential. One thing that Tartakovsky proved with Samurai Jack is his ability to tell mythic tales.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I have a bad feeling that this movie will be CGIed to death.

I can only see this movie becoming the next sequel movie to flop.

... which *should* be further incentive to just make a good movie instead of one that tries to be something its not. And Genndy is a geek who has roots in the same stuff we do. Don't know why, but I trust him.

Look on the bright side, guys. Maybe Genndy will get Gary Kurtz to produce this one as well.

Hell fuckin yeah. This movie is for me, part of that "List" everyone has of movies that made their childhood memorable. I really don't know much about the poeple making it but if it has been this long, I can't imagine them doing it a horrible injustice. I'm not expecting the awesomeness byond awesomeness of the original, not really even the same style or look (tho either of these would ruin my jeans....ahem) but the story of the original is just too damn cool that a sequel should work awesomely.

That's just my 2 cents.......plus 2 cents.....plus a billion cents...HA!!

Hey look, a bear!

i dunno about that...remember Blues Brothers 2000?

i'm a huge fan of the original, and as much as i would love to see a well done sequel, and agree that a properly done sequel would be awesome beyond awesome...i would hate for a poorly done sequel to tarnish the original

Actually you know... wouldn't it be cool to have it set the appropriate number of years later and have the olde David Bowie return and have Jennifer Connoly taking over the 'keys to the kingdom' as it were?

YEAH, THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. I NEED YO GO OUT AND BUY LABRYNTH NOW. IT'S ONE OF THOSE MOVIES THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN ON MY MUST BUY LISTS BUT KEEPS GETTING BUMPED BY OTHER MOVIES.

The basic movie DVD is available in WalMart dump bins for like $5.50, but there's a very nice collector's edition set that came out around $30 or so.

edit: oh yeah... the basic disc is on my 'to sell' list- I almost forgot... perhaps I can hook a brother up!

Is a sequel to either Dark Cyrstal and/or Labyrnth really a good idea?

I wonder whatever happened to this.  I was looking forward to it but I have not heard anything about it in a long time.  Yet we are on our fourth Transformers movie, too bad:(
