Jay, I’m surprised you support this firing, considering what you’ve said in the past.

I don’t. People shouldn’t be fired over their politics or things they say on social media.

I see. Just wondered because your post seemed to suggest an implicit agreement with the justification for the firing.

As for the firing potentially being because of the diminishing returns of his work, I’d be surprised if that was the case, as the series he was taken off of was announced pretty recently (maybe even within this past week), so the other reasons are more likely true.

Also, I’m pretty sure hiring/firing is the domain of the publisher not LFL, though I’m sure they have some sway.

Maybe I’m confused, but I was under the impression that Wendig has been writing comics at Marvel for a while.

From what I understand, he’s primarily a novel writer who’s done a few jobs for Marvel (the TFA adaptation, probably a couple other things I’m unaware of), but he’s not like a staff writer or anything. The series he got fired off of was a miniseries to be written entirely by him that was just announced last week. Point being I don’t think they would have put him on a new miniseries only to yank him off immediately after if his work itself was a problem. They just wouldn’t have put him on at all.

he wrote the first books in the new canon , the Aftermath trilogy , and from what I understand , received a lot of harassment for introducing a gay protagonist . A lot of things he has said on social media were a reaction to this while "focusing on his writing " at the same time .I just took a look at youtube , and there are already dozens of trolls jumping on the bandwagon to celebrate .

and I know they dont “silence” anyone , as there are other platforms out there for them to speak , I was more referring to the likes of Alex Jones etc who have claimed they are being silenced or “shadow banned” whatever the fuck that means. so it IS a 2 way street

Alex Jones is a different situation. He had no direct association with the companies that banned him from their platforms (Apple, YouTube, Facebook, and Spotify, all on the same day). He was censored, not fired. Wendig’s situation is in no way comparable.

If Wendig finds himself unable to communicate on those platforms in the future, then it’ll be the same situation and I’ll back him 100%. You shouldn’t be banned from a social media platform for having ideas that some consider offensive.

Agreed. It’s more likely the cause of his problems is his writing on social media rather than his paid gigs.

nah , that’s confirmation bias . we could play this game all day , but as the owner of the site , you have the upper hand

How is it confirmation bias? The guy who got fired because his employer felt his shenanigans weren’t worth the hassle was totally fine with the same thing happening to someone else because their beliefs are different.

I’ll just pretend you never said the second part because it’s become a regular observation without any merit. Despite some contentious debates, nobody on this forum has ever received unfair treatment because I had a disagreement with them. I think this discussion has been pretty civil so far, so I’m not sure why that would come up again.

A strange state of affairs - Chuck Wendig has been posting his views on social media for a long while now, so for Marvel to hire him - and then fire him (for those views - ‘It was too much politics, too much vulgarity, too much negativity on my part.’ - according to Wendig) - doesn’t seem to scan.

The guy had already completed 3 of a 5 part story (and was working on the 4th) he was hired to do - it’d be interesting to find why Marvel at this point apparently decided to dispense with his services. (Wendig’s tweets on Kavanaugh? Something that may have pissed off Trump / Trump’s friend & advisor and Marvel Chairman Isaac Perlmutter? - rumoured to be soon offered a cabinet position?, or maybe nowt to do with them?).

As screams in the void says… it’ll be interesting to read Marvel’s side of events. (and info such as was he given prior warning, or maybe a quiet word to ease off a little on the social media beforehand, etc).

Chuck Wendig’s blog - http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2018/10/12/in-which-i-am-fired-from-marvel/

Concerning to read that some of the harassment / abuse was of a personal nature (‘pretty creepy, and very personal’) - so much so that he has had to involve the police.

Though not surprised to see hear of the pile of 1 star reviews moments after the release of Aftermath (speed readers, eh? 😉) - coincidentally containing some LGBT characters within (which a few vocal people out there online had a problem with).

Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

I have to say, I’m not a fan of this type of research, where the person doing the research takes a less than impartial position. While the whole trolls and bots discussion is interesting and relevant to me, these articles tend to just want to use research results to smeer the opposite side. There’s no middle ground. It’s a vicious cycle of us versus them, which will end up doing a lot of damage to beloved properties, which have been hijacked by extremists from both sides, bent on pushing their agendas down people’s throats, whether they be called the alt-right, white supremacists, liberals, or sjw’s.

Indeed.

Arrivederci.

I’ve been basically free of the toxicity, with most of my SW stuff being limited to this safe haven here. That said, there has been an unwelcome addition to the community as of late. You know who you are.

If you have issues with someone, tell a moderator. This kind of veiled pot shot only fuels speculation, causes drama, and benefits no one.

I’m not naming him because he’s a pain in the ass, and the mods are already on his back.

Funny, because I’m a mod, and I have no idea who you’re talking about.

^ @ Anakin Starkiller …then let the mods deal with it , and to the previous poster above him , please read my original post and the rest of the thread , this has already been addressed .This is getting tiresome .

Apparently they were a spammer or bot that went back and put spam links in their posts.
