It'd be nice if both versions were included.
Rumor has it there are some subtle tweaks coming to the original TRON's re-release. Thoughts?

I've not seen Tron recently, but wire-removal and fixes like that are OK with me. Updating the effects in ANY WAY will destroy the cultural heritage of that movie.
IMO.

I agree about both versions of the original. I've always felt that the weird colors and lighting fit the idea (at least for me in 1982) of how surreal the inside of a program would seem. I'll see the new movie, but I can tell already that it's a little too shiny & perfect for me. It seems awesome - as opposed to weird & creepy.
Back in 1982, that was exactly how computers looked. ;-)
Yeah, I know there has to be updating and that the updating is in keeping with real-world updating. Just seems like the new one is a little polished for me. And yes, I realize I'm in the minority. Hell, I'm so small a minority - I may be the only one. ;-)
Don't get me wrong, I love the original. But I like awesome just as much as weird and creepy.

Your mom is a very nice person who is loved and admired by all her family.
I'm seeing Legacy tomorrow at my favorite theater of all time. It should be good if only for that reason; the Crest hasn't played a movie I've wanted to see in ages, at least not since the chain bought it.

isn't wire-removal updating the effects? I say you can remove dirt and scratches and whatnot, but nothing else. It's fine with me if he wants to update it, but I and many others want the film we saw in 1982. Release both versions. Don't make the same mistake a certain other producer made.
I'm with Warb.
I CAN TELL ALL OF YOU THAT TRON LEGACY WAS TOTALLY AWESOME !!! KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR EASTER EGGS. THAT'S ALL I'M SAYING.

I liked it quite a bit, as well - I've been reading a lot of reviews bashing it, saying the story is weak, that it's too much about the visuals, blah blah blah ...
... but those were all issues I had with the original, so I'm fine with the sequel having some of the same story problems.
I just don't understand these reviews saying it's as bad as the prequels. I thought it was pretty sweet.
Man, the Ducati product placement is so blatant that it's laughable. I know it's the norm these days, but damn. How about at least attempting to make it look like something other than a Ducati ad?

For the non-riders on the board, that's a Sport 1000. Dropped from production a couple of years ago.
^Is that a deleted scene from The Matrix Reloaded?

I agree 100% with Warbler but i think there's no chance of both versions being released.

if the original isn't released, I think there is no chance of me buying the blu ray.
I don't believe this. You're equating removing visible wires (which doesn't alter anything one little bit) to what Lucas did to create the SEs? That fixing mistakes that don't make one single bit of difference to the film is some sort of "blasphemy"? Please tell me I'm wrong before I start accusing you of being out of your goddamn minds.
I don't feel an massive compulsion to buy a Blu-Ray player let alone any discs.
There is still a few years left in DVD and with the size of the telly dictated by the size of my living space I can't see there being enough of a difference to warrant the expense.
Besides all you Blu-Ray collectors are really pushing down the price of DVD's (thanks chaps).
I was never a fan enough to bother with owning it. I saw it in the theaters, twice I think, but it was cheese. Flashy-as-hell cheese, but still cheese. I considered buying it because of the recent nostalgia factor, plus I haven't seen it since the theatrical run, so I remember almost nothing. However, looking just now at the prices of the DVD, I won't be. I'm certainly not going to be shelling out for the Blu-ray, no matter which version. Too many other films I'd rather have on Blu-ray and would watch regularly.
Even as someone who saw it in the theaters in 1982, because I remember next to nothing, I expect most of the Easter eggs Dave mentioned will be lost on me.

I'm afraid I'm with Warbler on this one. There's original - and there's not original. There aren't varying degrees. I always go out of my way to get original. The ONLY time I've ever made an exception is American Graffiti. I hate the title card change, but it's a top ten film for me so I took what I could get. Had there been digitally altered scenes, I would have passed.

I wouldn't call it blasphemy, exactly. It is just that is it changed. It is not was it originally was. Instead of the movie being product of 1982, it would be a product of 2010. I think that movies in there original form need to be preserved. If you wish to make changes and release multiple versions, that is fine. But to change the movie and not allow people to view the original, is wrong. If you wish to think I am out of my mind, feel free.

I hear the original version will be included as a bonus disc, tastefully lifted from the 1993 LaserDisc master!

Films are a product of the time they were made. If you change anything about that - including removing wires or erasing matte lines/garbage mattes - it no longer represents filmmaking as it was when the film was made. That, to me, is unacceptable.
Though when it's the only option, and the changes aren't too severe, I can generally look past it. Like the Raiders of the Lost Ark DVD, or the Aliens Blu-Ray. Would I prefer that they left in the reflection of the cobra in the glass, or the hole in the floor where Lance Henriksen's legs were hidden? Yes. Can I watch the movies and enjoy them despite these changes having been made? Yes.
But it's not the original version, and that thought is always in the back of my mind.
