TPM voted #12 worst sequel ever by EW Magazine

Author
Time
I got my Entertainment Weekly Magazine this week, and they have a list of the top 25 Worst Sequels of all-time, and Episode I: The Phantom Menace comes in at #12! This shows that this is the legacy of the Prequels, cause the first picture on the page talking about all these sequels is Jar Jar! That is the only Pop Culture reference that the PT gave us, Jar Jar, a punch line to how bad people views these films. Here is the list:

25. Matrix Reloaded
24. Next Karate Kid
23. Porky's II
22. Teen Wolf II
21. Legally Blonde 2
20. The Godfather III
19. Revenge of the Nerds II
18. Battle of the Planet of the Apes
17. Star Trek V
16. Ocean Twelve
15. Dumb & Dumber 2: When Harry Met Lloyd
14. Conan the Destroyer
13. The Sting II
12. Star Wars Episode I: THE PHANTOM MENACE
11. Dirty Dancing: Havanna Nights
10. Jaws: The Revenge
9. Speed 2
8. Friday The 13th , Part VIII
7. The Fly II
6. Weekend at Bernies II
5. Batman & Robin (1997)
4. Blues Brothers 2000
3. Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha' Hood
2. Caddyshack II
1. Stayin Alive

I guess TPM is not getting better with age.

Adam, whether it is a bunch of Star Wars purists or not, it is interesting to see how pop culture views the PT now that it is all done with. This isn't an exact science, this is just one of many lists that will appear that we can all debate on, so lighten up.

And yes it is a prequel, but you know what they mean by sequel, it was the fourth movie released in the series, so it is a sequel in the way it was released, but it is a prequel in the way it is in the story.

There was a list a couple of months ago in some magazine that had the top scifi movies ever and ESB was #1 and Star Wars was #4, ROTJ was nowhere to be found in the top 10. That list was interesting to see how the original SW and ESB are still the favorites and have aged very nicely among scifi/fantasy movies.

It is just a list, not the law.

Okay, Halloween III, Smokey and the Bandit III, and none of the posthumous Peter Sellers' Pink Panther flicks are on there. How the hell am I supposed to take these EW guys seriously?
The final Planet of the Apes film has no business on there. Oddly enough, it's the oldest film on the list. They couldn't find one bad sequel made before 1970?

On Topic, 3 films I really have to agree with are Star Trek V, Jaws: The Revenge, Caddyshack II. Those were painful to watch.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Though ST V is gloriously bad, it has grown on me for the sheer hubris of Kirk taking on 'God'. All I can picture now it Kirk and God, each with ripped shirts, engaging in fisticuffs.

Well that and the 'Where No Fan Has Gone Before' episode of Futurama in which Shatner talks about what a great performance he got out of himself.

The Godfather III? I assume they must be talking about in relation to the originals, because while it was no classic, it was still a great movie and definetely deserved its Best Picture nomination.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Where are Problem Child 2, Home Alone 2 and Deuce Bigalo: European Gigolo? Hehe. And does Return to Oz count? Hated that one.

Hey, Home Alone 2 was better than the original, in my opinion. Home Alone 3, however, and the sequels after that, deserve the walk of shame.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

But in that list, it's really a relation/comparison between the sequel and the original, IMO. And I understand and agree with this list.
But Home Alone, the original, is funny, but it's not a great-cult-classic movie... So, the sequel question is not even asked, I think...

Well, don't forget that the Godfather Part III was on that list.

They were missing Die Hard 3, Terminator 3 and Robocops 2 and 3.

Of course, you can never feature Episode I on enough worst ever lists. If there was a list of worst blockbusters ever, Episode I would be right on top.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Return to Oz is not a sequel to the Judy Garland version as it's derived from the Baum books. (It was interesting how many critics didn't seem to know about them at the time!) The animated musical Journey Back to Oz was a direct sequel though.

I actually liked the Battle for the Planet of the Apes.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

By that logic, Dumb and Dumberer isn't a sequel, either. Same goes for Temple of Doom.

Yep, but we're talking about "cinematographic" sequels, not chronological...

Yeah - this thread lasted for 2 seconds on Jedi Council. It took an army to unlock it. Every prequel deserves to be on that list.

Exactly what I was about to say. If you look at the Tin Man,Cowardly Lion, etc, they were taken directly from the illustrations in the books, not the Judy Garland movie. Also, there are some other characters that show up in the books in the final celebration scene in the emerald city Being a big fan of the entire Oz series of books, I loved Return to Oz. It was very true to the books. Unfortunately, everyone thinks Oz=Judy Garland and didn't get the film. Not that I don't like Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz, because I think its great. Its just that the two are similar, but different at the same time.

On another side note about Return to Oz, if one watches the "tour of the Lucasfilm archives" in the Supplemental materials to the Definitive Collection LD/Rowman's DVD extras, Tik-Tok is in there. I think he was at the beginning, and the camera goes by him in the midst of the expected Star Wars stuff. I thought that was cool when I saw him.

As for TPM, I hate to defend it, but I don't think it deserved to be in the list of worst movie sequels. There are plenty of worse movies than TPM that didn't make the list. I'll say that AOTC was worse than TPM. To be fair to it, there was no way on earth any film could of ever lived up to the hype that TPM had. Having said that, no, it wasn't a really great movie, and I'd just assume watch the OT. But I don't think it belongs on this list.

I think they measured the 'worse-ness' (worsity?!) of TPM by its fall from grace. OT to TPM - THAT's a long way down. TPM to AOTC? Meh - almost a smooth transition.
MTFBWY. Always.
