Info Wanted: anyone done a TPM and AOTC colour correction?

Is anyone doing any TPM and/or AotC Blu-ray colour correction? TPM doesn’t need that much work, although I found some shots that need some, like the Jedi Temple exterior:

This is a picture I found from what I believe to be the original version (not the DVD):

This is the Blu-ray version:

And this is my quick attempt at a colour corrected version:

As for AotC, it has that horrid green tint all over the movie and I’m not sure what can be done about it or how.

TPM - there is a pretty good looking DVD from a PAL TV broadcast. But I would too LOVE if somebody would do proper preservations of the prequels too

I believe people have identify it as the 'Teal' shift:

One scene in AotC not 'Teal' adjusted (but shifted elsewhere) was when Anakin confides to Padme about the killing of the Tusken Raiders.  So that's the pay off of the color adjustment.

Some other 2011 adjustments to consider are mentioned in: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/DIF-Difference-tool-to-spot-visual-changes-SW-2004-2011/post/538958/#TopicPost538958

I don't have much time right now, that's why I was asking if anyone was already doing it. But I think I could start doing one in a couple of months.

Yes, that would be the proper way to call it. Is there any solution?

P.S: Reading that thread I was reminded of the scene swap at the end of Yoda's duel. Has anyone tried to put the sequence in the correct order to see if there were any audio continuity issues?

^ The Teal shift seems like it is fairly constant throughout, shifting to the other end of the color wheel, should undo, but there are variations of midtones, etc. so finding those levels will require some time/effort.  Interested in what values you come up with.

That scene shift and the 'chase thru the power couplings' are strict reordering so the music cues didn't need to be changed.  But in other locations of the PT films, audio changes were identified.  TPM's 'Vote Now' comes to mind.

Don't believe any projects following your criteria have taken place in OT.com.  A fan edit of AotC may have done a color correction, asking around at fanedit.org would be a place to start.

I don't really know what would be considered "correct" for TPM. Probably if someone had a bootleg straight from a theatrical print we'd know how it should really look. (Not talking about the cam-recorded versions)

In the DVD/HD broadcast there's the pink tint over the whole thing, not to mention the over-sharpened edge ringing.

In AOTC on blu-ray though, the hue has been shifted on each color separately, it seems. The only cure for that would be to use selective color or something similar and match them back to the HD broadcast.

Or are you talking about a scene by scene RGB balancing correction? (Like, not following a reference.)

I'll check there, thanks.

I was thinking of using the DVD (or in this case the HD broadcast) as a reference, but from what you said, it seems to be a huge amount of work if I had to go through selective colour. RGB balancing might not give that much accurancy.

As for TPM, although limited, there are a good amount of screenshots from the film without any DNR or other filters applied, so I would have to go by that.

They finally got the aspect ratio back to its original correct size as what was seen in theaters on the blu ray and yet then they had to apply harsh digital video noise reduction on the original digital files.  It is somewhat disappointing that they did not go back to scan the film negative.  But then the effects would be at a lower quality so i can understand why they did not.

It would have been nice to have the grain not removed the original color timing and theatrical dolby 5.1 EX  audio in the DTS HD MA container.

I have heard the blu ray audio is a nice approximation of the theatrical.

Would it have even been possible through seamless branching to have the theatrical and DVD cuts on blu ray?

I am of course talking about the phantom menace which is of course the only film in the prequel trilogy and not a video.

Was the 3D theatrical truer to the original or the blu ray (besides the 3d of course)?

^ The pieces added to TPM since 1999 (extended pod race for example) are in the 3D.  The cropping is closer to the 1999 version, for home video the movie was significantly chopped.  and factor in this:

So when you start a conversion, do you start from the beginning or the middle or the end?
We worked in an odd order, because with Episode I, we were also doing a restoration. One of the first questions that my Associate VFX Supervisor, Dorne Huebler, and I started asking, was that if we were going to take this movie and cut it up into 2,000 separate pieces, we had an opportunity to upgrade what those 2,000 separate pieces are. It seemed like we had a perfect opportunity to go back and create a cleaner, sharper and purer version of the movie.

In fact, the window was closing on that; these archive tapes don’t last forever and they haven’t been meticulously catalogued and archived because no one thought that was really the master of the film, so it wasn’t clear that we were going to be able to find all of them.

Where did you find them?
They were in a variety of places. It was some work to find them and we found about 98 percent of them.

Also from that article:

It's kind of discouraging to think they had the opportunity to rework the film and they didn't fix any of the big problems.  I guess Lucas really liked the way it turned out, despite all the criticism??

Yes, the HDTV broadcasts featured CPY.

Well it is what it is. I suppose all of the changes they added for the DVD release were sufficient .

Big problems lead to criticism, criticism leads to opinion, opinions are best in the General Star Wars forum:

It was the Blu-ray version, DNR and all. Maybe the DNR was applied specifically for the 3D conversion? It's the only explanation I can think of.

Does anyone know what's the best broadcast version of Attack of the Clones available?

Thanks in advance.

There has already been some preliminary discussion on this...

Preserving the Theatrical versions of these movies would help keep a reference standard for future projects.

I agree, although as far as TPM goes, my purpose was more about doing colour correction of the Blu-ray rather than a full preservation (I guess the title is a bit misleading). I wouldn't mind helping someone who plans to do one, though.

I know adywan did a color correction of the TB version of TPM....you could probably use that as a basis.

Maybe. Although he colour corrected it by removing the pink tint present on the DVD version (pretty much like AotC now has a teal tint). On the other hand, I'll be using unfiltered frames and other pictures as reference. The OS has some of those.

P.S: Do you happen to know what's the best HDTV version of AotC available?

Truth be told....I have no idea if there are HDTV transfers of AOTC or ROTS.  If there are, I haven't seen them, nor would I know how to find them, sorry.

Adywan's version is great, but still cropped (he uses the official DVD) and without the theatrical subtitles

From the blu-ray screenshots I've seen, it strikes me as odd that TPM and ROTS look pretty much exactly as they should, but AOTC now looks different. I wonder why they made the decision to shift the color. Did they not have a 23.976p hdtv master from 2002 lying around?? Maybe they had to make a fresh telecine from the digital files for the blu-ray and the colorist - for whatever reason - added the teal. Ugh, it just doesn't look good.

I really just want to see the theatrical versions of these films to be preserved as they looked when they were released but with the OT being the main focus of this site it is highly unlikely that anyone with the skills will offer up their time on it.

I know we all have lives outside of here but there seems to be a resistance to this due to the OT itself.  I am hoping one day it will happen and I'm thankful to all those who have done what they could with the time they had.  Every step closer is a good thing.
