I couldnt disagree more. I loved The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Im sorry none of you did as we could have very long discussions about Star Wars in general...or maybe Generals in Star Wars...or Generals that like Star wars...what was I talking about?

yea, the PT and OT, though they're all part of the same story, are very different from each other. then again, each film is different from the other.

I dunno, AOTC and ROTS are nearly identical, IMHO. It could be just one long painfully awful movie.

i couldn't stand a four hour movie of anakin and padme flirting. "Oh ANAKIN! LETS MAKE LOVE AND HAVE A CHILD! LETS CARRY ON YOUR FAMILY NAME AND REJOICE IN KNOWING HOW MUCH WE LOVE EACH OTHER." Later... "ANAKING I HOPE WE HAVE TWINS! MY HEART WOULD BE OVERWHELMED WITH JOY! OH ANNIE! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!"

Fortunately, the four hour movie that consists of AOTC and ROTS only features a little over two hours of Anakin flirting with Padme. Though it is essentially four hours of Anakin whining (he whines when he flirts).

i never noticed that he whines. i just now noticed it watching some scenes. still two hours of anakin and padme, i couldn't stand. i love the robot chicken parody where the emperor's yelling at vader over the phone and at one point insults padme and makes him cry.

But Padme I love you! And the clothes you wear are about to make me bust a nut! Why can't we be together, why, why, why! I hate sand! Sand sucks! Why can't we be together, why? You're so soft! Not like sand! You're so hot! Why can't we be together? Whhhhhhhhy?

yea, saw that a bunch of times. i think he did good in TPM. i liked all the characters, action, SE, and everything. But, once Anakin and Padme got all flirty, i wished that i was only paying attention to obi-wan's mission.

You know, if it weren't a Star Wars film, I'd have to say that TPM is a damn imaginative and sincerely made childrens fantasy thats utterly unique and quite fun for most of its duration. I enjoyed it on that level when it came out, and I still do. Its a very fun film if you can sort of disassociate it from its place as the first episode of the Star Wars saga, which it does a terrible and disrespectable job of existing as.

But theres some soul in the film in its genuine conviction to entertain as a kids adventure fantasy; I still don't think its a very good film even as this, the writing and acting is not superb and the storyline gets bogged down a lot, but its certainly worth watching, and more than once. In a lot of ways thats what it seems like Lucas was really interested in, and its shows--he was more interested in creating a unique children's fantasy adventure from scratch, which he mostly did, but he didn't have the guts to actually make one from scratch so he had to build it within the confines of the Star Wars franchise, and I think because of that its a failure because it gets weighted down by its obligations to said franchise in terms of storyline and characters. I think being couped up for 20 years without being able to tell a story and then having the ability to portray all the crazy things he had seen in his imagination, Lucas let his Star Wars prequel turn into a sort of personal pet project--its no surprise that the film is basically the plot of Hidden Fortress mixed with Dinotopia, but with references to and characters of the Star Wars series amongst the storyline. He basically made it as divorced from the world of Star Wars as he could get away with.

10 years later it still stinks as a Star Wars prequel and as a serious movie, yet I can't help but feel like theres too much imagination in it to write it off completely. It has a very strange identity.

I think Zombie really hit the nail on the head, there.  It's a fun movie with more good moments than I can count in the other prequels.  It still has its flaws, though - definitely more than those in ESB and ANH put together.

There is a naiive charm about Menace that has grown on me more over the years and as I see my children enjoy it now appeals to me more.I still love the duel of the fates,Qui-Gon is a great character (not to mention he is from Northern Ireland) and while it is flawed there is a lot to enjoy in it.

I think some distance from it has helped too.Thing is though I rather like TPM,very much dislike AOTC and am a big fan of ROTS.My problem is not necessarily with the prequels but with the SEs so I maybe have a different perspective on it.

I will never forget seeing the crawl for TPM come up in the cinema the first time though. That was a real moment.

Love that bit in Fanboys where they are in the cinema and  Bottler turns round to them and says:

"What if it sucks?"

lol

The bitching and moaning does get a bit old though, lol.

Wow, it really has been 10 years.

I remember coming out of the cinema thinking "it wasn't that bad - painfully average, but okay". I thought it would mature over time and somehow become part of Star Wars cannon in my head. Nope.

Ten years later and I just can't believe how trite everything about the TPM really is. It's coloured the OT in ways I dislike, but there it is.

I actually enjoyed AOTC the most, perhaps because my expectations were so low to start with.

ROTS was painful to watch. I hate slapstick. With a passion.

In the ten years since 1999 I've watched TPM four times (1xcinema 2xDVD 1xIMAX), AOTC four times (1xcinema 2xDVD 1xIMAX) and ROTS three times (1xcinema 2xDVD). I don't see those numbers changing now, ever. At least not on purpose.

In the 15 years 1977 - 1992 I watched the OT innumerable times on VHS, too many to count.

I like to think I just outgrew the franchise (this may be true) but even my kids prefer the OT to the PT (mind you they are into Transformers and High School Musical so ....)

The PT could never hope to be the phenomena that gripped the world back in '77 and '78. 20+ years is a long time to keep your fans waiting.

I agree that TPM works as a film on its own, but as a SW movie it falls well short. the difference between this and AOTC/ROTS is that TPM was shot and made as a film. There were digital elements, but not the bluescreen extravaganzas we were exposed to-it still has the feel of a real swashbuckler. In essence TPM is a serial much like Flash Gordon which was Lucas's inspiration. I am still able to watch TPM once in a blue moon. For AOTC and ROTS I would much rather read the novelizations.

Has it really been 10 years?

TPM definitely had more to it than the other two, even apart from Neeson's performance, but let's not make the mistake of praising it too far. It's still a very artificial film, sometimes painfully sweetened, with some really dumb stuff, not to mention the torture of the podrace that was obviously designed to appeal to the tastes of pod people. I've just been watching Unforgiven. Now that was a real movie.

i loved the podrace! that was one of the best parts of the movie. one of the reasons it was so good is because it made me forget about the Trade federation and naboo and the sith. plus it gave us a look at more of the sports that are done in the galaxy aside from sabacc or holochess. those two may not count as sports

In ten days TPM will be 10 years old. I remember the night that it came out.

Author

I wanted to go to it opening night so badly. But I was puking my guts out. (Confused Matthew and I were sick at the same time, how cool is that!) I remember being disheartened when I woke up the next morning, Announced how much better I was feeling and that I would be good to go to the movies with my friends later that day, and heard my mom say, "Are you really sure you want to go see it? All the reviews coming in for it are absolutely awful! Maybe you should save your money and wait to see it when it goes to the dollar theater."

"Mom, you clearly don't know me that well! There is a new Star Wars movie out there, and I absolutely must see it! Those critic obviously don't know what they are talking about!"

I did go see it later that day with my friends.

Yeah thats right it came out early on the 19th instead of the 25th.  May 25th Unofficially known as star wars day.  Though star wars 77 did not go into wide release until later.

Phantom Menace is a memory better off forgotten much like the Holiday Special.  Though it does feel like the only real film in the prequel trilogy and is still such a bogus joke and a letdown.

The next 2 films were phoned in pieces of garbage.  Much more like animated cgi movies and not films.  A Bizarre mismatch of live action and cartoon kind of like Roger Rabbit or Looney Tunes back in action.

Though even Pixar could have made a better prequel trilogy if it was totally animated.

To me star wars is over.  Screw the low quality cgi cartoon series which somehow passes muster because it is accidentaly better than the prequels and just barely.  And that Actor got whiny Hayden down perfectly.

The live action show.  Forget it.  Does George Lucas even have fans left he has not alienated already who want to stick around for more bullshit.  Great more Boba Fett George.  But no Vader or Jedi.  Yeah i see that one going over well.

That tuskegee airmen picture will probably be a shoot em up dogfight piece and completely cgi travesty.  History Channel already made a better historical documentary.

Anakin almost never whines in the The Clone Wars, what are you talking about? He's Anakin as we all imagined him in the early days before the PT.

okay now, I realize there is epic hatred of the prequels on these boards but you cant possibly hold them in the same league as the holiday special. come on now.

I hold the holiday special completely apart.  The Prequels I can accept as side stories; I can't accept the holiday special at all.
