TMBTM's "The War of the Stars"; a Star Wars "grindhouse" cut — Page 4

Battle Beyond the Stars would be a good source for FX shots, not to mention it's music score. Roger Corman got a lot of mileage out of reusing both in other movies!

I saw Battle Beyond the Stars, at one point I thought about using SFX from others movies (I think there is also a battleship design real close of the Tantive in BBTS if i remember well. Or was it Star Crash?) but in the end I felt that not many shots from those movies could have been used for what I had in mind (exept maybe some explosions). And I wanted to do a Star Wars edit, not a mash-up of several movies anyway.

Mixing new music with Williams score is tricky, indeed. But replacing the whole music is almost imposible because there is still a bit of Williams score in the center audio chanel (the one with most of the voices and sound effects).
And the audio programes I tried to remove the music also removed some voices frequencies and ended with robotic voices feeling.
I spent quite some hours replacing every laser sounds on the bridge scene and play with audio volume to insert the voices back. Don't ask me to do this on the whole movie or I jump through the window, with a wilhelm scream ! ;)

Okay I watched The War of the Stars. I....LOVED it! Loved all the new scenes back in the film. It flowed very well. The music used in the film was great. The cantina scene was really good as well. Overall I really enjoyed this film. As for the ending..excellent idea. Never thought of ending ANH that way.

Only cons were, more could have been done to change up the film. What was changed up worked great! Also I would have loved a LOT more blood haha.

lots of great work in this...

it's a lot of fun....and there's a lot of funny moments,

better than family guy, robot chicken etc... but there's

a few touching moments/dramatic ones too..

the deleted scenes are handled really well,

and i like the new ideas for scenes, and the plot changes also..

even the alternate lines and voices are very good..

this is one of the best fan edit projects i've seen in awhile...

Just watched it last night... I have to say TMBTM, you are quite talented.  Very entertaining with some really nice surprises.

Here is a short review (here there be spoilers):

THINGS I LOVED:
(1) The opening with the Tomita music and the editing around it was fantastic!  It would be nice to replace at least a bit more JW music with something more Tomita-esque or italian, but even then there are no complaints.  Very well done.

(2) how you edited the Owen and Beru death scene.  The song fit fairly well (though it would be interesting to find a similarly themed sad italian song, say from goblin or the like to see how it fits)

(3) Darth Vader's altered character... he really seems to enjoy being evil in this one (nice comeuppance in the end too)

(4) the Benny Hill-ish italian music when they're on the run in the Death Star.  What was interesting was how the beat of the music matched the rhythm of the movement of the actors.

(5) the overall editing changes: Han and Greedo's exchange (Han: "I don't think they would appreciate another body"  Greedo: "I think they wouldn't mind".. BLAM!  just barely finishes his sentence!); Luke's practice on the Falcon (didn't see that one coming); the Vader "force" effects... almost too much to list!

THINGS I WOULD CHANGE/ADD/ALTER:
(1) I think the only thing I would slightly change in the beginning would be to make the title more 70's/80's italian, with the words looking like the old STAR WARS logo (maybe have 2 blue laser beams - to contrast with the red - come from the middle right and left, hit together and form WAR OF THE STARS like below, pulse with brightness and disappear).

(2) maybe replace Obi Wan's wail with the Sasquatch scream.

(3) probably the biggest (and only real) problem with the edit: I wold at least edit out all of the TROOPS and the fan film Death Star stuff. While you did grain it up, it still stood out as fan-made.

(4) add the blurring FX when Obi Wan throws the noise to distract the troopers... maybe even see how it looks when he's doing the mind control on the trooper on tatooine.

(5) add a bit more blood:
(A) - when the first guy in the overlooking security station gets lasered, maybe instead of blood you show the laser go through him and hit the wall behind him.
(B) - definitely could use a bit during the detention block rescue attack
(C) - maybe add some guts coming out of the upper part of Obi wan's cloak when Vader chops him in half.

(6) speaking of which, the italian chase music should have ended and changed to something more dramatic and/or sad during and right after Obi Wan gets killed in front of Luke.

(7) don't know how it could be done, but maybe slip the SCANNERS head explode into one of the cockpits during the last battle (would have to add a helmet and one of the orange suits over his regular suit and tie) and/or add one of the quick bug eye edits from MAD MAX (right before Toe Cutter gets hit by the 18 wheeler at the end) when Porkins or one of the other pilots die.

(8) maybe change up the laser sound effects with sounds from FLASH GORDON or any number of italian STAR WARS rip-offs.

(9) maybe add a few more subtitled lines from R2.  There were times where he would beep away with no subtitles and then out of the blue there is a line or two.  I would probably change the font to something more general as well as make it yellow and smaller per a previous suggestion.

(10) maybe during the scene where Leia says "and you call yourselves humans" add a slower (not completely slow motion, but at say 60% to 70% speed) shot of the Alderaan explosion on the viewscreen (taken from the previous scene).

Even so, this was an excellent view and very fun to watch.  All of the suggestions above I consider minor and would add to the fun, but aren't necessary other than number 3 (if there was only one change you would make, I would take out the TROOPS and the other DS scene - those were the only things that really took me out of the movie).  Otherwise, keep up the good work!

PS: LOVED the extra bits, especially the videos, not to mention the extra "bonk" sound effect when the stormtrooper hits his head on the door. >:)

Hehe, some very nice ideas. Although I don't have Adywan's magic (or patience!) to do all of them (the "MAD MAX eyes" shot, would have been GREAT. I wish I had the idea!)

I just want to point that the Death Star added scenes, even if poorly directed, I agree, are not "fan" films, but part of the Star Wars video board game. Meaning it IS David Prowse under the suit. Maybe there is still too much contrast on the picture to really fit the Puggo grande style, indeed...

Well... it may be from the video game, but it still looks like a fan film or something from video tape; same thing with the TROOPS footage.  Overall, it just stands out way too much.  I don't think I would go as far as what Bingo is suggesting (like with the iguanas), as I can understand that editing itself can be a major task, much less adding in brand new FX work.

Regardless, I enjoyed it tremendously, and whether you do a version 2 (now or later) or just move on to a brand new edit, I will say I will be looking forward to your next work.

Adding Iguana's is more in the arena of editing than special effects (the new gore is pure special effects). There are already many films that use the 'giant lizard' technique which could be used.

Sure some of these are in the wrong kind of landscape that never stopped Z-Movie makers from using anachronistic stock footage from other films.

It's easy to forget that not long before and even after Star Wars came out films like that were still being made.

My review on FE.org:

Imagine if you will, two talented editors.

The first, Adywan, takes the Star Wars Special Edition and actually makes it special. With the input and support of many others, he fixes color issues, cuts out misplaced humor, re-edits scenes, adds FX, and gives Star Wars fans a new experience to treasure for a lifetime.

The second, The Man Behind The Mask, is approached by film producer I.M. boon with a difficult task - to improve the original Star Wars. On a shoestring budget and with an insane deadline, TMBTM must fix Star Wars so it can be re-released for mass consumption on boon's extremely profitable website FE.org. boon requests that TMBTM use an old faded and scratched print of the original movie, as he claims he cannot afford to acquire the 2004 DVD. TMBTM is asked to add better music, add blood, fix Vader and R2, and put scenes back into the film that should never have been removed.

Working alone, TMBTM does his best, and boon declares on his website that it is the best version of Star Wars that ever was or will be. He even goes so far as to claim that after seeing his version, no one will ever watch Adywan's version again.

Imagine boon's shock and horror when he learns that people love the film, but for all the wrong reasons. They chuckle at the blood. They laugh at Vader and R2. They giggle at the music. They ridicule the film quality. They shake their heads at the usage of a fan film and an interactive VHS game. The film is an unmitigated failure, boon is ruined, and TMBTM goes back to working on horror films.

In truth, TMBTM is a brilliant faneditor. This movie worked for me on so many levels, I can see watching this many times in the future. I especially loved the music choices and the new Vader, as well as the twists at the end. I find myself thinking of this as an Intentional Unintentional Comedy. My only disappointment is that the ending implies we won't ever get to see The Striking Back of the Empire...but I say it has to be done. I'm sure a solution could be found - death doesn't mean anything in a soap opera. Let's see it, TMBTM!

Thanks for this. 10/10

That's easy!  Just throw out the explanation that they pieced Vader back together again, and that's why he's all burned up and half-mechanical (that maybe he wasn't burned up and all in WAR OF THE STARS, just wearing the armor the same way the regular troops wore the Stormtrooper outfits).

That would further explain why he would want to torture Han for prolonged periods of time in EMPIRE too... you know, considering what Han did to him and all...

You know, IF this ever gets done (by TMBTM or someone else), I wonder if it would be conceivable to replace "the line" with the supposed one used by David Prowse ("Obi Wan killed your father").. or for that matter, make HAN Darth's son.

Any ideas as to what it could be called?

Ignorance

That would be GREAT (I'm guessing Luke would still say his line afterwards?)!  Would a sex scene (where you can't see the faces too well) be included somewhere in the beginning, just to further drive in the point?

He He, I thought about using shots from ROTS when he is on the medical room (without Hayden's face, for we can still see he is young in those shots), then his "Frankenstein" scene with Palapatine.

But really, maybe I will do a sequel but not before 6 months or more, if I have enough good ideas, why not, but not anytime soon.

I really think a "direct to video" sequel could be fun, with VHS look to the picture this time?
