TMBTM's "The War of the Stars"; a Star Wars "grindhouse" cut (Released) — Page 6

Yeah, sorry, it was an april fools joke ;)

But I'm sure I'd like to make a funny edit of Empire someday. Like I said before, more a kind of "Direct to VHS" edit.

If your ESB cut were a "direct to video" version, it would be cool if you could somehow mess with the framerate to make it look like it was shot on beta instead of film. It might result in the film having to play slightly faster, but probably not fast enough for most people to notice right away. I think it would call for some expirimentation...

The plan, for now, would be to work in PAL. So the movie will be 4% faster in PAL anyway. But usualy I try to make a NTSC version after, so the lenght of the movie plays at the right time for those who are used to it. But maybe I could find a way to make a NTSC version playing a bit faster than the usual NTSC. I don't know, it will be something I'll do once the whole work is done anyway.

At one point I thought about taking my VHS of the original ESB (not the SE, the real original movie) and make a mpeg2 file out of it, but I think a clean version from a the DVD would be more easier to play with. I mean to add special effects and camera tracking, those kind of things. A VHS quality would be a bitch to play with. So I think I'll add some after effects VHS lookalike filters on the edit once it's done.

I'm far from begining to start working on it (I'm working on a Mimic edit for now) but I collect some ideas and I think I'd like to do it.

Do you think the ratio should be 4:3, or a full 16:9 would do fine?

The old full frame CBS/FOX Laserdisc was slightly sped up to fit on one platter back in the day.

Where were you in '77?

I'd like no speed up, please. :p Most people had the proper running speed cuz most of us just had the VHS for our region anyway.

In keeping with the feeling of the 80s, I'd definitely also go 4:3. Using [one of] the CBS/Fox logo[s] would be awesome, too. Either is good:

1983: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rV5PtTn6ec&NR=1
1984: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InQVZm60QGA&feature=related

It's too bad you couldn't use VHS to edit with, but if filters and such can reproduce the look accurately, I can see how it would be easier to play with beforehand.

Everyone,

I'm both new to this forum and to this "Grindhoused" Star Wars "War of the Stars" fan edit.  I'm desperate to see this thing but I'm unable to download it off of fanedit.  My avi/dlc skills are minimal at best; I can download the files but can't play them on my VLC software, nor can I burn them onto DVD.  I feel like some 90 year-old trying out a computer for the first time!  If anyone has this and would be interested in a DVDR trade, please message me.  I'm in the US and really, really want to see this movie.  Thanks!

Why?  These two statements are contradictory.  You say you are unable download the files; then you say you can, but you can't play them.  (Using a dlc doesn't require any skill: you just open it with jdownloader, and it does everything else.)

Why can't you play them?  If you have downloaded the DVD, use Imgburn to burn it.  If you have the AVI, use VLC to play it.  You open VLC, then use it to open the AVI.  I have never heard of VLC being unable to play a simple AVI, and it is most unlikely that your computer cannot handle a simple AVI.

You need to explain more clearly what exactly is causing you trouble and why.

See, I'm coming off like a fool!  Thanks though for the response.  I followed the FAQ and downloaded both the "NTSC" and "AVI" links, but neither work -- both come out as dlc files.  I figured burning to DVD would be beyond my capabilities (I have NERO burning software but beyond copying discs my abilities are minimal), so I thought I could just watch on the VideoLan program (aka VTC).  That fails too because it won't open either file -- and even though one of them says it's AVI, it downloads as a dlc clip.  I've done google searches on this and checked the site's forum and the info I've found is only more confusing.  I even tried right-clicking on the downloaded dlc file and renaming it with "avi" at the end, but the VLC program still can't open it.  I'm certain there's some (basic) thing I'm overlooking...

You haven't downloaded the files yet.  The .dlc just contains links to the files, not the files themselves.  Use jdownloader to open the .dlc and start downloading the actual files (which should have .rar extensions).

Perfectpawn, follow the instructions that TV's Frink gave you in the link.  We can guide you from there, once you have the files.  There is no reason why you should not be able to burn the DVD.  It is very simple, and I'm willing to guide you through it.

PM me when you are done, and I will talk you through using Imgburn.  :-)

Im addicted to this edit - Love it!

I'm trying to collect all the new songs/music  that are in it so i can make my own soundtrack - but i don't know what music is playing when C-3po and R2 land on tattooine....it sounds familiar...thats all i know. if TMBTM is reading this or anyone else could you let me know?

Cheers :)

Also where did you get the "Address me as Lord Vader" audio from??? is it also a lost recording?

Thanks cutnshut

The music when R2 and 3PO land on Tatooine is a version of Aranjuez by Isao Tomita:

All the music titles are in the end credits of the edit.

The "Adress me as Lord Vader" is from the VHS video board game, with JEJ doing the voice (and Prowse being behind the mask by the way):

video footage from this game are also used when Vader talks to an officer through a TV screen and then leave Tarkin to search for the rebels.

I've been meaning to ask, but I was wondering if I'm in the credits, since R2 subtitles was my idea in a way. I'm not asking for credit, just curious.

That's...sad. No other word for it. :p There are several MUST HAVE edits you MUST HAVE! Haha.

Anyway, regarding credits, there's just a general "Thanks to everyone at fanedit.org". I thought I might be mentioned, as I helped with proofreading the subtitles again like in the Silent Film editions, but it's no big deal. (especially as there aren't a ton of them; the silent film ones took a few weeks, comprising dozens of e-mails) I figured the subtitle idea itself was his. Couldn't remember, anyway.

Damn, I did not mention originaltrilogy.com in the end credits?

I did not remember it was you doubelofive who came with idea of R2's sutbtitles, but yes it is! I even have PMs between us of me asking you to use this idea. Sometime I have the memory of a fish! haha.

At least I can add "OT.com" and "doubleofive" name in a "special thanks line" on the fanedit.org page of the edit.

EDIT: done!

Scroll down a bit, before the Awards picture.

This edit is not perfect, far from it!

It even has white "grindhouse" lines over the black bars on the opening scene... I'm so ashame of this.

Thanks! As I said, I was just curious. I wouldn't thank me if I'm the only one getting thanked, its not that important, just an idea cast to the wind.
