What do you all think about the new "director's cut" that's been released on DVD? I haven't seen this new version, but I've heard the white on white look of the original has been altered using CGI and that many sequences have been redone with CGI. Not only this, but I heard that Lucas went so completely bananas that he actually altered the performances of the actors. Using the computer, he apparently made Duvall roll his eyes- digitally! "We made him roll his eyes because we didn't have the technology to do that back in the 70's." Give me a break.

Also, the rating was changed from PG to R- was there a reason for that? Did GL add more sexual material or violence? Anyhow, I thought so few people liked THX that it wouldn't be worth it to pour more money into this.

Thoughts by people who have seen both versions?

Having seen both the director's cut and the original, the original is definetely the better one. However, I don't hate the DC as much as I hate the SE's of the Star Wars series. THX-1138 was a very low budget film, so I can agree with him on most points that they simply did not have the money to do certain things. The editing feels very cramped in a way that I can feel that they desperately wanted to pan over to other things, but couldnt' for fear of exposing the small sets.

So, originals the best, but I recommend checking out the DC as well.

BTW Trooperman, the "eye-rolling" scene is something you'd need to see the DC to understand. He is not simply rolling back his eyes like we would, they roll back completely into his head, something they could not have accomplished simply with the actor as well as their effects budget. Is it an improvement though? In the case of the scene, I feel it helps, yes, but its nothing earth shattering.

I have to go with bad_karma24 on this. The DC is very cool. I still don't like the movie and I still thing the original should be out there but in many cases it's a little better than the original. As for the R rating it was because the ratings were different back then. He didn't add enough to make it an R but the stuff that was in there was enough to warrant an R rating by today’s standards. The original version was rated PG and it has the love/sex scene in it. So there really isn't anything more violent or sexual in this movie that wasn't in the original.

Thanks for the info. Apparently these are not as bad as the SW SE's.

So the original version with the nudity got a PG rating? Wow. After a little research, however, I found out that they added some sexual content during the hologram scene with the black woman (involving THX). Wondered if anyone had any info on the specific changes.

Thanks!

I was only able to see the director's cut and not the original so I can't compare. The CGI sequences look crappy but the film as a whole is not completely without interest.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

There is quite a bit of info on this page comparing the original version with the new DC version.

The forum as a whole has lots of general information but it seems to be a bit dead at the moment.

The film was re-rated because GL resubmitted it. I think it was a smart decision on his part, since the meaning of the PG rating has changed significantly in the last 34 years. PG ratings used to carry a warning in the rating box stating that the content my not be suitable for pre-teens, and many films rated PG by the MPAA got much stiffer ratings elsewhere. I honestly think that GL may have been concerned that some people would think that a movie with his name on it, carrying a PG rating, is suitable for viewing by unsupervised children, which is clearly not the case with THX-1138.

Re-rating is a funny thing, though. If Planet of the Apes (1968) were resubmitted, it would quite likely get a PG-13 (current rating is G) for roughly the same reason as THX got an R: nudity. As well, when The Wild Bunch was recut to the director's specifications in 1998, it was threatened with an NC-17 if it was resubmitted. Warner got around this by using the rating that was originally given to the DC in 1969 (yes folks, that's right: both the theatrical cut and the DC had the same rating). Funny how that works.
